Hearing Lu Ya's boasting, Air Force felt even more frustrated. There were fish in the lake, but they just wouldn’t bite his bait. What could he do about it? Forget it; this spot was a bust. Time to switch to a new fishing spot!
Watching Lu Ya walk over to Shi Ye, Air Force rubbed his nose and returned to the campsite to set up the cooking stove. He approached Shi Tian from behind and chuckled, “Xiao Tian, are you hungry? What are we having for breakfast?”
Air Force's words left Shi Tian a bit confused. Hadn’t they just said they wouldn’t have breakfast and would only prepare lunch? However, they were hungry, and preparing breakfast was still his responsibility. He couldn’t let them row back down the mountain for a meal! After all, they had gotten up in the middle of the night to climb, and he was feeling a bit hungry himself.
“I brought some steamed buns. I’ll fry a few dishes to go with them! We can make some hearty dishes for lunch later!” Shi Tian said as he stood up and scratched his head.
“I’ll keep an eye on Rod while you go whip up something to eat!” Air Force said cheerfully, giving Shi Tian a pat on the shoulder.
Returning to the campsite, Shi Tian initially planned to make a milk soup with carp, but after glancing at the small cooking pot, he quickly abandoned that idea. The pot was too small; a larger carp wouldn’t fit, and a smaller fish wouldn’t be enough for four people. He needed to think of another solution!
Shi Tian had brought rice and steamed buns. Cooking rice in this small pot would barely be enough for two people; he might as well stick with the steamed buns! He decided to make milk-flavored egg steamed bun slices instead—something simple that could wait until he fried four dishes first.
As soon as Shi Tian left, Air Force eagerly took over Shi Tian’s fishing platform. When it came to fishing skills, Shi Tian couldn’t compare to Air Force!
After changing to a new worm, Air Force cast his line into the water. In less than a minute, he hooked a fish. Under the watchful eyes of Shi Ye and Lu Ya, he pulled up a grass carp weighing over two pounds with precision and tossed it into the bucket without even wiping his hands.
Air Force entered into a mode of continuous catches while Shi Ye didn’t lag behind either. He grabbed a shovel and set up his own fishing spot right next to Air Force. He didn’t even bother setting up his own fishing platform; instead, he carried his fishing box and rod over to join Air Force.
After more than half an hour, Shi Tian finally finished frying four dishes, and Shi Ye had also caught some fish by then. Although he hadn’t been as successful as Air Force with continuous catches, he managed to reel in several big fish weighing three or four pounds each, which made him quite satisfied. As for the smaller fish like Mai Sui and Bai Tiao, he tossed them back into the water—let them grow up to become someone else’s breakfast!
“Time to eat!” Shi Tian called out as he finished frying the milk-flavored egg steamed bun slices.
At that moment, all three gathered around Shi Tian’s fishing spot. Air Force sat in the middle while Shi Ye and Lu Ya flanked him on either side, each about three meters apart.
Seeing Air Force continuously catching fish made Lu Ya give up on his lure rod. He picked up a four-and-a-half-meter rod and sat on a rock without even moving his fishing box over.
“No rush; let me tire this fish out first!” Breakfast was something Air Force had asked Shi Tian to prepare, so he felt too embarrassed to admit that he wasn’t hungry.
In contrast to Air Force's indirectness, Shi Ye was much more straightforward.
"Bring the food over! Let's eat here; the fish are biting right now!"
The three men’s authoritative demeanor left Shi Tian somewhat speechless. Well, it seemed he had to listen to Shi Ye, so he obediently brought the dishes over.
He set up a folding table and made several trips back and forth, arranging the food on the table and then serving it into their hands. Each person received a dish, topped with a few slices of steamed bun, making it look like a communal meal.
After ensuring the three were well-fed, Shi Tian sat alone at the table, savoring the remaining tofu balls. Hmm, his cooking skills had indeed improved!
Once they were full and everything was cleaned up, the sun was quite fierce. With such a strong sun overhead, Shi Tian had no interest in heading to the lakeside to bake in the heat. Instead, he set up the Summer Tent and crawled inside to continue experimenting with his culinary skills.
Hainan produced bananas; perhaps he could make some caramelized bananas another day—it should be quite delicious.
Jiu Zhuan Da Chang was a classic dish from Shandong Cuisine that he needed to learn. Last time he went there, he couldn't find any large intestines. He would ask Shi Ye later tonight where he could buy them.
Spicy Stir-Fried Clams were delicious; they were his favorite. No need to buy them since he lived by the sea. He would check the tide chart later; he should be able to find some on the beach!
Around four in the afternoon, Shi Tian crawled out of the tent and watched as the three men turned bright red from sun exposure while they continued their battle with the fish in the lake. Although the fish weren’t biting as well as they had been in the morning, they still managed to reel in one or two occasionally.
The three hadn’t eaten lunch; when Shi Tian asked, they all said they weren’t hungry. This must be what it meant to be a fisherman—just having a catch was all that mattered.
Watching Shi Ye haul in another carp weighing over a pound made Shi Tian's hands itch with desire. He had caught so many fish that morning; the thrill of hooking one lingered in his memory. However, Air Force was occupying his spot and showed no signs of leaving, so Shi Tian hesitated to ask him to move.
After watching for a while and feeling increasingly restless, he decided that since Air Force was in his spot, he would go fish where Air Force was.
There were three rods at Air Force's spot, with the longest measuring seven meters. Having used a 3.6-meter rod that morning, Shi Tian wanted to try out how it felt to use the seven-meter rod.
The bait tray had ready-made bait; he pinched off a piece of sour-smelling bait and wrapped it around the hook. With a flick of his wrist, he cast it into the water. The fish float slowly stood upright before becoming completely still.
He stood up to splash some water on his hands; then Shi Tian quietly focused on the float. As they say, fishing requires patience—he understood that well.
Minutes passed without any movement from the float—no big deal; he would keep waiting!
Ten minutes later, still no movement from the float; perhaps the fish hadn’t caught wind of the bait yet!
Another ten minutes went by with no sign of life from the float—was it time to reel it in and change bait?
Just as he was pondering this, he looked up and saw that the float had vanished!
He quickly lifted his rod to set the hook; an immense force pulled back on his rod, nearly yanking him into the water!
Oh no! He had hooked a fish! A big one! "Quick! Get the net!" The splashing sound sent Shi Tian's adrenaline soaring as he tightly gripped his fishing rod and shouted for Shi Ye and the others to come help him.
