Sun Lang had been gone for twenty minutes, and Shi Tian couldn't help but feel frustrated as he watched him leave the store, glancing back three times. He felt like throwing the almost dried fish on the ground right at Sun Lang's face!
"Brother! Why does picking a net have to be such a hassle? Just borrow Uncle Zhang's for now, and you can pick one later when it’s less crowded! Do you think I have all the time in the world to fish? With this delay, I might as well forget about fishing this morning!"
Grumbling, Shi Tian returned the rod to Sun Lang and turned to run back to his fishing spot. He had only half an hour left and just hoped he wouldn’t be interrupted by the Air Force!
However, just as he turned around, Shi Tian was caught by Sun Lang.
"You’re taking this fish home. We’ll use it for lunch today!" Sun Lang said, bending down to pick up the fish from the ground and presenting it to Shi Tian.
"Fine! It’s been a while since I had fish. Using this one for lunch isn’t a bad idea!" Shi Tian replied, though he lamented that the fish had been left out too long and was practically dead. Otherwise, it could have fetched a couple of bucks!
He hurried back to the store with the fish, placing it in the fridge to prevent it from spoiling in the midday heat.
By the time he returned, Shi Tian had completely lost interest in fishing. With such hot weather and everyone else having stopped fishing, he knew casting his line wouldn’t yield any results. It was better to just enjoy the sea breeze and watch them struggle!
Feeling that Sun Lang had wasted his entire morning of fishing time, Shi Tian wanted to push him down as a form of revenge. But considering the strength he felt earlier from Sun Lang, Shi Tian ultimately shook his head and gave up; he knew he couldn’t take him on with his small frame!
Throughout the morning, everyone else had caught something except for Shi Tian and Chang Guadi.
It was normal for Shi Tian not to catch anything since he hadn’t even cast his line, but Chang Guadi was having a rough time. While others were pulling in fish one after another, his float remained completely still!
"Old Chang, you’re really struggling! Everyone else is casting over fifty meters while you’ve barely managed that all morning. The difference is quite significant!" Shi Tian teased as he sat on the fishing box, enjoying Chang Guadi’s misfortune.
"Is this my fault? It’s clearly a problem with my rod!" Chang Guadi retorted. "Their rods cast much farther than my Ordinary Rod. You didn’t sell me a defective one, did you?"
Chang Guadi was no novice; Shi Tian had observed his casting technique and knew it shouldn’t be that short.
With similar rods and proper technique, why was he casting so much shorter than Old Zhang and the others? Could there really be something wrong with his rod?
Thinking this over, Shi Tian shook his head decisively. The rods produced by Fishing Box were randomly assigned as samples; it wouldn’t make sense if being a sample for two days suddenly made them cast farther!
"I’ll give it a try!" He stood up in front of Chang Guadi, took the rod from him, reeled in the line, and aimed at Shui Bi Zhang’s spot before casting.
Splash! The lead weight hit the water, leaving Shi Tian dumbfounded; he hadn’t cast any farther than Chang Guadi had on his own.
"What the hell! This can’t be happening!" he exclaimed in disbelief before quickly reeling in the line to investigate further. However, after examining it for a while, he still couldn’t figure out what was wrong.
"Shui Laoban," he called out for help. "The issue with my Spinning Reel shouldn’t affect casting distance!"
Not understanding what was going wrong, Shi Tian decided to seek outside assistance. Among their group, Shui Laoban and Shui Bi Zhang were undoubtedly skilled anglers; even if Chang Guadi couldn’t find a solution himself, Shi Tian didn’t hold out much hope either!
The way a Spinning Reel releases line is completely different from that of a Water Drop Reel. With a Water Drop Reel, when releasing line, the spool rotates; factors like line capacity and bearing quality can affect casting distance.
But with a Spinning Reel, once you disengage the line lock, it acts like fishing line tangled around a beer bottle—once you cast out the hook, there’s virtually no resistance when letting out line!
Without any fish biting, Shui Laoban simply reeled in the line and said, "I can't say it has no relation at all, but I can say the impact is minimal. However, I've studied this Wheel, and the design of the spool is somewhat different from an ordinary Wheel; it allows for smoother line release."
But that's not the most crucial point. This Wheel is specifically designed for this type of rod. If you switch to a different Wheel, there will be some discrepancies with this Rod, which can affect casting distance!
As he spoke, Shui Laoban cut off the Hook and replaced his Wheel with Chang Guadi's Rod, tying on Chang Guadi's Hook. With a casual flick of his wrist, he cast out effortlessly over fifty meters.
He then retrieved the line and handed the Rod to Chang Guadi, saying, "You should give it a try!"
Shui Laoban's actions left Chang Guadi dumbfounded. After catching so many fish, he couldn't believe that the quality of the Spinning Reel could affect casting distance! This revelation was shaking his worldview!
Taking the Rod, Chang Guadi reeled in the line and made a powerful cast, sending it out seventy meters. With the line that had been released, he nearly cleared the spool!
"Old Chang, did you see that? You can't blame my Rod anymore; it's clearly a problem with the Wheel!" Seeing Chang Guadi cast so far, Shi Tian felt relieved.
Now that they had identified the issue, it could be resolved. As for how to fix it, that was up to Chang Guadi.
He could either spend money on a new Wheel or continue fishing at his forty-meter range; there were no other options!
Chang Guadi cast several times in succession, consistently reaching beyond fifty meters. Shi Tian also took a turn with the Rod and immediately felt the difference.
The distance of the cast was largely unaffected by the Wheel; it primarily depended on the Rod's balance. With the new Wheel attached, the Rod felt noticeably smoother and easier to cast!
After reeling in the line, Shi Tian quickly removed the Wheel and returned it to Shui Laoban. He handed the Rod back to Chang Guadi and said, "You didn't buy a fake Shimano, did you? The feel is completely off!"
There are many grades of Shimano Wheels; entry-level ones cost around two hundred dollars, while professional-grade ones start at two thousand. Clearly, Chang Guadi's Wheel was not high-end—it was far inferior to the one on his Air Force Iso Rod!
"I spent over a thousand on this Wheel after saving up," he said. "I bought it at Dog Dong; how could it possibly be fake?" Glancing at Shi Tian, Chang Guadi began to suspect that this Wheel might indeed be counterfeit.
Looking at the Wheel in Chang Guadi's hand, Shui Laoban chuckled and said, "This Wheel is fine; it's actually a mid-range Shimano model with decent quality. It's just not compatible with this Rod!"
Though Shui Laoban was not directly involved in fishing anymore and held a high position elsewhere, he still possessed enough emotional intelligence to ease everyone's concerns with just one sentence.
Checking the time, Shi Tian decided not to dwell on the Wheel any longer. He stood up and said, "I'm going back to cook. You all should wrap things up quickly; dinner will be ready in an hour!"
Originally, he had only prepared ingredients for himself and Su Xueyi. Now that Sun Lang had added a fish to the mix, it was clear he intended to mooch off dinner. If Sun Lang was staying for dinner, then Shui Bi Zhang and Shui Laoban couldn't be left out! Old Zhang couldn't be left out either! And neither could Chang Guadi! That meant Shi Tian would have to go buy more groceries.
