Glancing at the excited faces of the group, Shi Tian strolled a couple of steps with his hands behind his back. "To do a good job, one must first prepare their tools," he mused. "When it comes to fishing, you have to invest in your equipment! How can you catch big fish without the right gear?"
These were the words he had just received from a fisherman, and now he was returning them, eager to see if these fishermen would buy his hooks!
A pack of hooks wasn't expensive; the suggested retail price was twenty yuan, which came down to just four yuan per set. However, to assemble a complete set of hooks was a different story. The Sleeve Hooks were used less frequently, but he figured he should have at least two sets on hand! The Ise Nii was essential as the main line, so he needed two or three sets of those as well. Adding in the New Kanto, which some preferred over Izu and Qian You, it all added up—two or three hundred yuan would be gone in no time!
How were these hooks priced? Shi Tian reminded himself, and before Old Gao could speak up, the fishermen chimed in first.
"Check the packaging; you can take a look!" he prompted. The group began examining the packaging of the hooks, which bore a line of small print indicating the suggested retail price: yuan.
Brand-name hooks ranged from ten to thirty yuan each, but this pack offered ten or even twenty sets for the same price. Clearly, Shi Tian's pricing was significantly higher than that! Yet considering the quality of these hooks, the price wasn't entirely unacceptable.
"Your price is too high; it's several times more than brand-name hooks! A hook is still a hook, but this price is hard to swallow!" Despite their words, none of the fishermen showed any intention of putting down the hooks—they were clearly interested!
Shi Tian didn't care about the high price; as long as someone bought these hooks, he'd sell them for even one yuan per pack. But if he wanted his workers to put in effort, they needed to be well-fed!
That was merely a suggested retail price; how it was actually priced was up to Boss Gao, wasn't it? Shi Tian said with a smile as he pulled Boss Gao aside for a private discussion.
Standard hooks were two yuan per pack; as for rock fishing hooks, Lure Hooks, and Sea Rod heads—those could be discussed later! He whispered into Boss Gao's ear and then cheerfully placed the hooks he intended to give Boss Gao on the counter, watching how Boss Gao would handle this business.
In this bag of hooks that Shi Tian brought out—aside from the five sets of Ise Nii—there were also Sleeve Hooks and New Kanto hooks: ten sets each of Sleeve Hook sizes 1 and 2, while others had twenty sets each.
"What? Is that all the hooks you have? How am I supposed to divide this? If I send out a message, they'll all be gone! What about those who won't get any?" Old Gao exclaimed dramatically after glancing at what Shi Tian had brought out. His gaze swept over the few people gathered around the tea table.
Shi Tian rolled his eyes at Old Gao and sighed helplessly. "Do you think making these kinds of hooks is easy? I got these materials through connections from a factory that deals in four-digit numbers; otherwise, how could they produce such hooks?"
He had wanted Old Gao to be his worker but ended up being treated like one himself!
There was no choice; to promote these hooks, Shi Tian had to play along with him.
With just one sentence, those still sipping tea immediately sprang up and rushed over. After inspecting the bag thoroughly, each person picked out a set of hooks to see how Boss Gao would price them!
Since there was a way to get more materials, why not gather more? If it could be done once, it could be done countless times! This product was in demand; a higher price could be accepted! Putting away the bag of hooks, Old Gao stepped behind the counter and cleared out the central space to arrange them carefully.
He began displaying the hooks and took out some adhesive labels from a drawer. With great seriousness, he wrote down a retail price: yuan and covered it over the original label.
"Old Gao, that's a bit shady! The suggested retail price is already printed on it; how can you turn around and change it here? Is this how you do business?" The others watching were taken aback by Old Gao's actions.
"The packaging already has a suggested retail price printed on it; why are you writing your own? What kind of operation is this?"
"Am I not allowed to reject his suggestion? There are only about ten sets here; I still need to keep some for myself! You’ve already taken four sets; there won’t be enough left for everyone!"
Old Gao defended himself with righteous indignation, leaving Shi Tian—who was merely observing—utterly astonished!
"Do you want this Hook? If you do, scan the code for twenty. But once you step outside, you have to say you bought it for thirty; otherwise, I can't help you!" After saying this to a few people, Old Gao took out a sealed pack of Hua Zi from the drawer. He opened it and distributed some to the group, stuffing the remainder directly into Shi Tian's hands.
Holding the cigarettes, Shi Tian watched as the four lined up one by one to scan the code. He couldn't help but grumble inwardly; Old Gao was ruthless! With just a flip of his hand, he had turned tears into tenfold profit! And he still managed to sell them off with such bravado!
Once the four finished scanning, they noticed Old Gao was about to kick them out. Shi Tian, unable to bear the scene any longer, quickly spoke up: "Just having a Hook won't catch big fish; you need a solid fishing line too!"
Hearing this, the four immediately rushed back over. "What kind of line? Is it like the leader line on the Hook?" They had seen the line on the Hook before, and its pulling power exceeded their expectations. Without a strong main line, they could only increase the line number, but that wouldn't prevent them from fishing.
The leader line affects how well fish bite; as long as there's a leader line, it won't impact the fish's interest. However, if the main line were switched to something like that, it would be impressive. Such a small line number could enhance sensitivity when fish bite, allowing fishermen to better time their hook sets.
It must be the same kind of line! "I'll give you a spool to try out; this line is hard to come by and there's not much of it. I can't afford to waste regular line for testing!" After speaking, Shi Tian ran back to his car and returned with a bag of fishing line.
The Hook had a suggested retail price marked on it, but there was no price on the line—only standard information and Xing Brand's Trademark.
The profit margin on the Hook was high, but for the line, it wasn't as lucrative. A regular line of about one hundred meters typically costs around ten dollars, while the wholesale price was only about three or four dollars. For branded goods, even achieving a twenty percent profit margin would be considered good; anything higher would just lead customers to buy online.
"Is this what you meant by getting lines from those four-digit factories? Let me test its pulling power; if it matches what we just saw!" Old Gao examined the line in his hands. Before he could test it himself, the four had already taken the line and were tying it to a dumbbell.
Using that line for a twenty-pound dumbbell was certainly inappropriate; if they could lift a ten-pound dumbbell with it, they'd be thanking their lucky stars.
Old Gao and Shi Tian ignored the four and huddled together to discuss wholesale prices for the lines. Shi Tian was eager for him to promote the Hook; he didn't care about high or low prices. But as for fishing lines—that was made from Points; they couldn't earn Points from that. Shi Tian certainly wouldn't speak so casually about fishing lines as he did about Hooks.
The quality might surpass branded goods, but without any name recognition, naturally, the price couldn't be set according to branded goods' pricing. Five dollars per spool—limited supply; take it or leave it!
