Shi Tian got into the car and drove along the river, looking for places where there were many people fishing. He intended to find a few young people to gather some intelligence about the situation.
It wasn't easy for Zhou Yi to find young fishing buddies; most of them were busy working hard for the country, and only those who were of no use to society had time to fish! Like him, who was just idling around!
After a round of searching, he handed out a pack of San Gou snacks and looked up at the sun in the sky. Shi Tian thought it would be better to find a place with air conditioning to wait until after two o'clock before heading out again. It made sense; it was mealtime after all. He had occupied a table for almost an hour with his ten-dollar meal, so it was no surprise they were eager for him to leave. It was quite restrained of them not to chase him away with a cleaver.
Stepping out of the fast-food joint, he was hit by a wave of heat. Shi Tian quickly turned around and dashed into the neighboring Telecom Service Center.
"Hey there, I’d like to get a new SIM card! What packages do you have? Can you help me out?" Shi Tian said as he sat down in front of the counter staff.
The service at this outlet was quite decent; at least they provided chairs for customers to sit while handling their business.
Shi Tian was still using his family’s SIM card. As for the one from school, it was useless for internet access here, so he had tossed it away without hesitation.
As more customers came in, he recognized more fishing buddies. It was time to get a card specifically for storing contacts of fishing buddies. With a new card, he could register a WeChat ID and keep everything related to fishing gear and buddies on that card!
The service at the outlet had improved, but the basic routine hadn’t changed much. They would start with a package deal to gauge your sensitivity to pricing; if you weren’t too concerned about costs, they would upsell you on data plans and broadband options, even offering multiple supplementary cards—always managing to hit your economic limits just right.
If you were sensitive about pricing, they would categorize you into the next tier. Don’t even think about getting supplementary cards at low prices; if available, it would only be one card along with perhaps a three-meg broadband plan or maybe even a TV box.
If that still wasn’t acceptable, they’d cancel the broadband and TV box options—probably thinking you were single and wouldn’t have much use for extra cards anyway. Such people were only suited for large data plans; only data could alleviate their loneliness.
He chatted with the attractive staff member for nearly half an hour. If it weren’t for his good looks giving her patience, he probably would have been shown the door long ago.
“Sir, would you like to try our Satellite Phone service? The lowest tier is only ten dollars; it could save your life in emergencies!” Shi Tian bantered with her while she tried to keep the conversation going.
Shi Tian’s outfit wasn’t high-end, but his smartphone was quite expensive. Someone who could afford a domestic phone worth several thousand yuan wasn’t likely just a manual laborer.
Hearing about the Satellite Phone piqued Shi Tian's interest; this seemed like a good idea! Just because he wasn’t catching sea fish now didn’t mean he wouldn’t in the future. Having a Satellite Phone would undoubtedly provide an extra layer of security when wandering around Nan You!
“Tiantong Satellite? Is it globally covered now? The card is easy to get; I just need to grab a phone from you guys! Do you have any in stock?”
It was tough to buy one at retail prices; they were being marked up by over two thousand yuan now, making them unaffordable.
Even if he could buy one, Shi Tian wasn’t planning on it anytime soon! The little money he had was what he earned from running his shop recently; buying a phone would wipe him out financially!
In reality, things weren’t that dire; the Air Force had given him some substantial red envelopes. However, he hadn’t linked that money to his personal account yet. Once that money moved around, tax issues would arise—if he didn’t pay taxes first, that cash would become hot potatoes!
Hearing this made the staff member awkwardly smile. What kind of joke was that? If they had phones available, they would have sold them along with the cards long ago instead of waiting for him to come by!
The time was about right, and Shi Tian had signed up for a package that included data and minutes for calls. However, the data wasn't cheap; it was clearly stated that it was a monthly fee, while the remaining benefits were complimentary and would last long-term.
There was actually another data plan available, but the catch was a bit deeper. After two months, without realizing it, this plan would start charging fees. Shi Tian found this kind of trickery unbearable!
As he took out his card, the young lady kindly helped him insert it into his phone. Two signal bars appeared on the screen. Taking advantage of the air conditioning, Shi Tian quickly registered a WeChat ID and casually added the new number to the Fishing Group, setting himself as an administrator. He planned to study it later that night and upgrade the group.
After spending a bit of money on air conditioning for over an hour, he checked the time; it was time for him to get down to business!
After two-thirty, more people began to gather by the river. Although there were still many elderly folks around, most of those casting their lines at this hour were capable of fishing until dark.
"Hey there, how's it going? Any bites?" Holding a two-meter-seven rod, Shi Tian began his journey of sharing benefits.
He had just arrived and cast his first line! There was no action yet! For someone new to this spot, Shi Tian had already grown accustomed to such silence.
"Nice rod you've got there! Must be a branded one!"
After exchanging a few words, the man reeled in his line and switched to the first set of fish hooks that Shi Tian had given him. Warmth wasn't just handed out randomly; he needed them to use their own fish hooks first. At this point, the fish weren't biting much; he would have to wait another hour or two.
After making his rounds and distributing over ten sets of fish hooks, Shi Tian continued driving upstream along the river. He had already given away more than ten kilometers worth.
The further upstream he went, the fewer anglers there were. By the time he left the city area, there were hardly any fishermen left along the river.
Checking the time again, he felt it would be a shame to head back now; his two-meter-seven rod was itching for action. It would be too unfair not to cast a couple of lines with it.
He casually found a small path down to the riverbank, set up his fishing box, and took out his trusty two-meter-seven rod along with a box of earthworms he had brought from the store earlier that morning.
The quality of this fishing box was quite good; after being cooped up in the car all day, surprisingly none of the earthworms had died. This showed how strong its insulation properties were.
First, he applied some Wind Oil Essence on himself, found a good spot at the bottom, and cast his line into the water. Before he could even see if the float stood up straight, he quickly pulled up his rod and caught a Little White Strip!
The fish here were quite diverse: Bai Tiao, Qiao Zui, Pahdi Hu, and even small Ma Kou with stripes on their bodies. Concerned about misidentifying them on his list, Shi Tian specifically asked in the group chat and was informed they were Peach-Headed Fish.
So if Ma Kou has tattoos, does that make it Peach-Headed Fish? As long as they weren't on any protected list and behaved themselves, each one would earn him points!
