"Hey! It's been a while since you three old gentlemen came by! Please, come in!" The Black Pit Boss greeted warmly upon seeing the three elderly men. They were regular customers, and it had been months since their last visit. Surely, they hadn't been lured away by another establishment!
With the New Year approaching, they brought along a few younger companions to enjoy some fishing. The boss was quite polite, but he was also keen on making a profit.
The three-acre pit was expected to be packed for New Year's Day, but to their surprise, there were indeed quite a few people fishing that day! As per the usual rules, it cost one dollar per hour, with a return of three dollars for each fish caught. After laying out the rules, the boss began explaining them in detail.
The three old men were already familiar with the regulations of Heikeng, but the boss mainly aimed his explanation at Shi Tian and his friends.
"Don’t you have any sheep or Big Geese around here? If we end up catching you, we should at least take something back with us!" After hearing the rules, Shi Tian looked around and noticed that there didn’t seem to be any livestock nearby. It felt a bit odd.
"Go ahead and let me know what you want! If you really manage to catch me, whether it's sheep or Big Geese, I'll go buy them for you!" Upon hearing Shi Tian's bold claim, the Black Pit Boss smiled slightly.
Having run this Fishing Spot for so many years, he wasn't worried about a Youngster like Shi Tian trying to outsmart him. Many had tried to catch him off guard while fishing, but very few succeeded!
"The old man said we should come here to steal a donkey, so let's aim to catch you a donkey today!" Shi Tian declared with determination, looking at the smug boss.
However, achieving that goal would be quite challenging. A donkey cost over ten thousand dollars; with seven of them fishing, each would need to catch quite a few fish. Even if they emptied the pit of fish, it probably wouldn’t cover half the price of a donkey.
"No problem! As long as you can catch enough fish, I'll go buy you a donkey!" The boss chuckled; he enjoyed this kind of dream-filled enthusiasm from young folks!
They paid up and selected their Fishing Spots, lining up in a row with two spots between each pair to avoid conflicts when casting bait. Shi Tian used Old Kong's Customized Rod which was suitable for catching fish weighing three to five pounds.
Finding the bottom and adjusting the float, he cast his line. The fish in Heikeng weren't easy to catch; those that remained were experienced slippery ones.
After casting his line and checking for bites, he planned their next strategy. He grabbed some Carp Bait and Crucian Carp Bait, mixed them with water to soak them up before placing them aside as he noticed the float darkening.
On his first cast of the year, he caught a Big Carp weighing over three pounds! It seemed like Yi Laotou's charm was working wonders!
With a swift motion, he tossed the fish into his bucket. The Black Pit Boss raised an eyebrow; this kid had some skills!
After half an hour of fishing with only one Carp and three more caught by others, it turned out that this Heikeng wasn’t as easy as they thought!
The bait mixture was ready; he pinched some onto the Lead Weight and prepared to test it out with a scatter shot. Not all Heikeng responded well to scatter shots—especially when trying to steal donkeys—since many had already fished here for half a day; scatter shots could easily scare off the fish from the bottom.
Starting with simple scatter shots seemed like a straightforward approach for Shi Tian while the three old men began experimenting with Ma Tuan bait.
When it comes to Pan Hei Keng, one must mention the Three Old Men. After all, they have been scheming revenge for so many years!
As Shi Tian cast his bait, the frequency of catching fish didn’t increase much. However, he wasn’t in a hurry; he was playing a strategic game. Since Heikeng wouldn’t allow him to fish in the usual spots, he decided to use scattered bait instead. First, he would lure the fish to his own spot before figuring out how to catch them.
Watching Shi Tian frequently cast his bait, Black Pit Boss chuckled to himself. Initially, he thought this group was genuinely seeking revenge, but it seemed they were just a few old men bringing some youngsters out for fun! These old men certainly had quite the appetite for fishing!
Turning back, he sent over a bottle of hot drink for each of them. Knowing these old men weren’t short on cash, he wanted to keep them around and prevent them from leaving.
“Boss, there aren’t any fish in this pit, are there? Did you catch them all in time for the New Year?” Shi Tian said with a grin as he accepted the hot drink from Black Pit Boss.
Having cast quite a bit of bait already and with his fishing spot nearly ready, Shi Tian decided it was time to get serious about fishing.
“Don’t make excuses! There are definitely some fish in here—at least a thousand or two!” He had asked a friend about it; whether they could be caught depended entirely on his skill.
With a smirk, the boss reminded him, “Since you’ve cast so much bait already, why not try using Fei Qian? I can’t guarantee you’ll catch anything, but your chances should be better!”
Glancing back at the boss, who seemed rather peculiar yet enthusiastic, Shi Tian decided not to be polite. After all, he was always open to good advice!
“Alright, boss! I’ll take your advice! But if I catch too many fish later, don’t feel sorry!” Handing the boss a cigarette, Shi Tian reeled in his line, adjusted the lead skin, fine-tuned the float, and cast his rod again. Before he could finish his smoke, a carp was already on the line.
