Chen Xuan hurried back home as evening fell, the aroma of cooking wafting from every household. When he entered, he found Zhang Cuifang bustling about in the kitchen.
"You're back!" Zhang Cuifang exclaimed, peeking her head out from the kitchen. Her eyes lit up upon seeing Chen Xuan. "You’re in for a treat today! Your dad brought back some beef from your uncle, and I’m making it for you."
Looking at the fine lines around Zhang Cuifang's eyes and the few strands of gray in her hair, Chen Xuan felt a sudden pang in his heart. He recalled how his family had supported him throughout the past year since his graduation—helping him with the watermelon fields, assisting in planting. No matter how many rumors circulated in the village, his parents had always stood by him without complaint.
With these thoughts, Chen Xuan felt his eyes welling up slightly, and he instinctively clenched his fists.
"The meal will be ready soon. Where's Dad?" Chen Xuan called out towards the upstairs but was surprised to find no sign of Chen Dahai.
"Your dad is eating at someone else's house!" Zhang Cuifang replied as she placed several large pieces of beef onto Chen Xuan's plate. Then she added cheerfully, "It’s quite funny actually—Chen Dashan came over at noon and returned five thousand yuan, insisting on treating your dad to a meal. Your dad refused to go even after taking the money; Chen Dashan almost cried! You should have seen his face—it looked just like a wronged little wife!"
"Really? That's quite something!" Chen Xuan chuckled; it felt like double happiness had arrived. After all, receiving repayment was a good thing. No wonder his mother had been humming a tune while cooking.
Seeing his mother so happy made Chen Xuan smile as well. "Mom, I have something to tell you."
"Go ahead, what is it? Are you short on money again?" Zhang Cuifang asked, taking a blissful sip of beef soup. She casually pulled out five thousand yuan from her pocket and placed it on the table. "You need money for that farm project of yours; there are plenty of expenses involved. I’m saving this five thousand for you."
Chen Xuan's nose tingled with emotion, nearly choking up as he replied with a smile, "It's not about that."
"What is it then?" Zhang Cuifang asked curiously, tilting her head to look at him.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Xuan slowly said, "Mom, I made some money selling watermelons and I'm planning to contract the barren land near the watermelon fields to expand the farm!"
"Contract the Barren Land!?" Zhang Cuifang exclaimed, her eyes wide with disbelief as she looked at Chen Xuan. "You mean the several hundred acres of Barren Land next to the watermelon field?"
"Yes!" Chen Xuan nodded.
"How much would that cost?" Zhang Cuifang frowned, calculating for a moment before saying, "That land, the village says it’s a hundred thousand to rent for ten years. It hasn’t been taken for so long, if you want to rent it, you could probably get it for eighty thousand."
"But Mom, I don’t have that much money right now. If you really want to contract it, I can borrow some from your brothers," she added, reaching for her phone to make a call.
"No, no!" Chen Xuan hurriedly said. "Mom, I’ve made some money. I already have enough to contract the Barren Land."
"Enough? Eighty thousand?" Zhang Cuifang looked at him in confusion. "Where did you get that money? Did you sell all the watermelons?"
Chen Xuan knew he couldn’t tell his mother too much at this moment. He directly took out his phone and showed her his savings.
"Thirty thousand?!" Zhang Cuifang gasped.
"Yes!" Chen Xuan replied. "A big boss was interested in my watermelons, and I sold them for thirty thousand. Mom, I plan to use this money to contract the Barren Land."
"That’s great, son!" Zhang Cuifang said joyfully, her wrinkles crinkling as she smiled widely. "I knew you could do it! Look at how much money you made selling watermelons!"
"Go ahead! Whatever you decide to do, Mom supports you!"
Zhang Cuifang was overjoyed. She happily added a piece of beef onto Chen Xuan's plate and casually asked, "By the way, how much are your watermelons selling for per pound? I was just thinking your price seems a bit high."
Chen Xuan looked down at his beef and casually replied, "Ten."
Clatter.
Zhang Cuifang dropped her chopsticks on the table.
She stared blankly at Chen Xuan. "How much per pound?"
"Ten!" Chen Xuan answered.
"Ten per pound?!"
Zhang Cuifang was stunned.
"What kind of watermelon sells for that much? Is our son trying to fool us?"
Zhang Cuifang looked at Chen Xuan with a complex expression. "Mom, it's not what you think!" As Zhang Cuifang grew increasingly confused, Chen Xuan wasted no time. He got up and brought a watermelon from the tricycle into the house.
"Here," he said, handing a piece to his mother.
Zhang Cuifang instinctively took it and bit down.
Swish!
Her eyes widened, sparkling with excitement! She pointed at the watermelon in her hand, unable to express her exhilaration.
"Yes!" Chen Xuan smiled and nodded. "This is the watermelon I grew!"
"Impressive, son!" Zhang Cuifang suddenly understood everything. Her face lit up with joy as she exclaimed, "I knew it! When you graduated and came back to take over the watermelon field, you must have had your reasons. Son, you’re amazing! I’m so proud of you!"
Chen Xuan smiled back, a flicker of something indescribable passing through his eyes. He said nothing more and simply focused on his meal.
After finishing dinner, Chen Dahai still hadn’t returned. Chen Xuan greeted Zhang Cuifang and headed to the Old Village Chief's house.
The Old Village Chief was comfortably lounging in a chair, propping his feet up while smoking a pipe.
Chen Xuan set down a bottle of liquor and a pack of cigarettes he had bought on the way and briefly explained his purpose.
"You want to take over the Barren Land?"
"Yes."
"You’re not pulling my leg?"
"No."
"Ten years for eighty thousand? Let’s sign the contract right away!"
The Old Village Chief eagerly pulled Chen Xuan back to his office, quickly drafting the contract before signing and stamping it, then handing it over to Chen Xuan.
Chen Xuan smiled, signed the documents, pressed his fingerprint, and completed the payment in one go!
Watching Chen Xuan's departing figure, the Old Village Chief stood at the door, puffing on his cigarette, and suddenly chuckled.
This kid has some skills; the whole village is watching!
