In Changfeng County's seed market, Chen Xuan had visited a few times before. He had purchased some tomato and cabbage seeds here, and now, a plot of vegetables had already grown, ready to become delicious dishes for him at any moment.
Upon entering the seed market, Chen Xuan headed straight to the same shop as last time. The shopkeeper's surname was Chen, and there was a distant familial connection; three generations back, they were all villagers from Chen Family Village.
The owner was a dark-skinned man in his thirties. When he saw Chen Xuan walk in, his eyes lit up, and he greeted him with a smile. "Xiao Chen, back again! What are you buying this time?"
"Brother Chen," Chen Xuan replied with a nod. He scanned the shop and said with a grin, "I’d like some crop seeds—sweet potatoes, potatoes, and chili peppers. Get me some of each. I’m planning to set up an agricultural experience base."
"Really?" Brother Chen's eyes brightened at this news. He patted Chen Xuan on the shoulder with appreciation and chuckled, "Out of all the young folks I know, you're the only one still dealing with the fields. Which young person these days still does this?"
As he spoke, Brother Chen shook his head with a hint of nostalgia.
The items Chen Xuan wanted were all available in the shop. Brother Chen turned and went into the back room, returning with a large bag of seeds.
There were sweet potatoes, potatoes, and chili peppers scattered about, at least seven or eight varieties in total. Chen Xuan was satisfied and was about to pay when a thought struck him. He asked, "Brother Chen, do you have any corn seeds?"
"Corn? Of course we do," Brother Chen replied, turning around to grab two packets of seeds from the shelf. He smiled and said, "One is from a domestic company, and the other is from abroad. Which one do you want?"
Chen Xuan looked at the two packets in Brother Chen's hands. One was from a well-known domestic enterprise, Nong Wang Group, with corn seeds that could yield about a thousand kilograms per mu. The other was Monsanto, a name Chen Xuan wasn't very familiar with.
"Monsanto?" A glint of excitement flashed in Chen Xuan's eyes. The Monsanto Group was an internationally renowned leader in agricultural products, with dozens of crop varieties and a very broad market worldwide. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Monsanto Group was a giant in the global agricultural sector!
Corn, being a widely cultivated crop, was certainly within Monsanto's scope of expertise. Chen Xuan found it unsurprising to see Monsanto's corn seeds; what intrigued him was why these seeds from Monsanto were placed alongside those from Liu Yueming's Nong Wang Group.
The shop was empty.
Chen Xuan looked at Brother Chen and whispered, "Brother Chen, tell me, is there something fishy about these two brands being placed together?"
"Hmm?"
Brother Chen looked at Chen Xuan with surprise and said quietly, "Xiao Chen, you noticed that?"
Chen Xuan nodded. "Of course I noticed this obvious competitive relationship."
Sighing slightly, Brother Chen said, "I won't hide it from you then. The seeds from Monsanto entered the domestic market a year ago, and it's said that they can yield up to 1,100 kilograms per acre—very high productivity! They offered significant incentives to channel distributors and retailers, specifically targeting competition with Nong Wang Group's Corn Seed."
He continued, "Over the past year, most of the Corn Seed I've sold has been Monsanto's; Nong Wang Group hasn't sold much at all."
At this point, Brother Chen shook his head regretfully. "I've heard that Nong Wang Group is in a real bind over this; their stock price has dropped significantly."
Chen Xuan raised an eyebrow. A few days ago, he had overheard his teacher, Professor Yang, mention this situation casually. Listening to Brother Chen now made him realize just how dire things had become for Nong Wang Group.
