Xu Li, satisfied after loading a box of bullets, returned home with local specialties. Only Andrei sat alone on the sofa, bored. He plopped down next to his father-in-law and asked, "Where's Brother Three?"
Andrei glanced up and down at his son-in-law, then nodded towards the inner room. "Brother Three brought you new clothes and boots. Try them on for size. After dinner, I'll teach you how to drive the tractor. In a while, we’ll need to chop wood; our summers are short here, and we need to prepare enough firewood for winter."
Xu Li nodded and headed into the inner room, carrying two large bags into his own space. Upon opening them, he found a pair of long leather boots and insulated snow boots inside, along with plenty of clothes. He tried on the boots but found them a bit large. After stuffing in two pairs of socks, they fit just right.
He stomped his feet a few times and felt good about it. Changing into camouflage pants and fastening his belt, he returned to the living room. "The boots are a bit big, but everything else is fine."
"You'll still grow taller; it's better if the boots are a little big," Andrei replied as he led Xu Li to the wood shed. After pulling out the tractor, they drove towards the ranch. Along the way, Xu Li carefully observed Andrei's movements, quickly memorizing the steps. After crossing the railway, the tractor chugged forward.
On the distant hillside, cattle stood or lay scattered about. As they drove through the herd and over a small rise, their view opened up significantly to reveal vast fields where sheep grazed. Popov was riding a black horse, leisurely patrolling the grassy area.
A few women were pushing a wheelbarrow filled with freshly cut hay while chatting and laughing. Popov circled around the tractor twice before calling out, "Haha! Natasha, your son-in-law is here!"
The two women looked up simultaneously; one of them, slightly older and with a hint of melancholy, turned back to continue tossing hay to the sheep herd. Xu Li's mother-in-law approached the tractor with a cheerful smile, standing on her tiptoes to kiss Xu Li on the forehead. "Have you slept enough, dear?"
Seeing Natasha's caring smile made Xu Li's nose tingle with emotion as he grinned back. "Yes, I came to see Mom."
Natasha paused for a moment before realizing what he meant and kissed him again on the cheek. "Good boy."
Andrei and Popov stood nearby smoking cigarettes, chuckling as they watched. Popov gestured toward Xu Li and said, "The boy looks a bit thin; he probably can't handle heavy work for now."
"We're not idle either; when we get old and he grows up..." Andrei replied.
"True," both old men laughed heartily. Natasha took Xu Li's hand and led him over to her friends for some cheerful chatting while Andrei finished his cigarette and took Popov's long whip before mounting his horse to patrol the ranch. Meanwhile, Popov drove the tractor towards another hillside where large bundles of hay needed to be loaded.
That evening, feeling contented, Xu Li lit up a cigarette and rubbed his slightly sticky fingers together before grabbing a handful of snacks under Eva's bright light. "Did you dream at all after eating those fruits?"
"Nope! I just fell asleep and woke up," one girl replied.
"Me too!" chimed in another.
The two sisters shook their heads in unison while Xu Li felt that his dream had been very vivid. In it, he had experienced life from a divine perspective in a place called Earth for quite some time—where Huaxia was bustling with activity, filled with tall buildings and beautiful landscapes; everyone wore smiles of happiness.
He had also listened to many beautiful songs—some from Huaxia and others from abroad—none of which he had heard before in Blue Star. Shaking his head to dismiss those thoughts, he tightened his grip around both girls' shoulders and said, "When our children grow up a bit more, let’s travel to Huaxia together, okay?"
Eva was only concerned about one thing: Is there good food there?
Anna also became interested: Are there fun places to visit?
Xu Li grinned widely, clearly happy: That place is my Motherland, with all sorts of things.
