The next morning, Ivan returned home with two boxes of pickled vegetables and half a pig along with a beef leg. His monthly salary barely covered the household expenses, and after working for over a decade, his savings were pitifully low. If it weren't for the occasional windfall from Mother's Family, he probably wouldn't have any savings at all.
His wife's income was meager, and with four children and his mother-in-law living with them, the burden on his shoulders was heavy. It was only in the past couple of years that he received a promotion, which brought in a little extra income and made life somewhat easier.
But who would complain about having too little money these days?
As he glanced at the snacks and drinks in the co-driver's seat, he chuckled and pressed down on the accelerator. The old vehicle bounced along the muddy mountain road, gradually disappearing into the distance.
On the afternoon of the fourth day after Brother-in-law left, Pushkin cheerfully arrived at the ranch with a middle-aged man and two young men. The busy uncles and aunts immediately gathered around them.
Andrei opened his arms and embraced the middle-aged man. "Valery, you little rascal finally decided to come back?"
"Uncle Andrei," Valery replied with a wry smile, shaking his head. "I must have given you quite a show."
"What are you talking about?" Old Russian patted Valery on the shoulder before looking at the two young men beside him. "Are these from your family?"
"Yes, this is my eldest, Peter, and this is my second son, Sherif."
When Xu Li arrived, Andrei pulled him close with pride and patted his back. "This is my son-in-law, Makarov."
Xu Li shook hands with Valery and then with the two young men nearby. Valery looked Xu Li up and down and nodded. "He's a fine young man. Come over to my house for dinner tonight."
"Sure thing, Brother Valery," Xu Li replied.
Although Valery was over ten years older than Xu Li, they were of equal standing in terms of family hierarchy, which puzzled Peter and Sherif a bit as they felt somewhat diminished in status.
After Xu Li greeted them, he continued to work on mowing grass. His father-in-law had mentioned that all the sheep needed to be fattened up before winter, so it was essential to act quickly. Meanwhile, Andrei drove a tractor carrying Popov and another elder into the woods to gather firewood for winter.
That evening, after everyone tidied up, Natasha brought out the roasted meat and cold dishes prepared earlier in the day as they headed to Pushkin's house. The long table in the yard was filled with dishes, and several aunts hugged Xu Li and the twins.
Valery's wife looked quite nice; her figure wasn't as plump as he had imagined. Overall, she gave off a pleasant impression. However, Peter and Sherif seemed to have their eyes glued to the twins.
This made Xu Li quite displeased as he rolled his eyes. "What are you staring at?"
The girl sitting next to Peter nodded in agreement. "Yeah!"
"Little Sister, you're really cute! What's your name?"
The young girl politely nodded at Xu Li. "My name is Katyusha. You really look like a big brother."
"Haha, you think so too?"
As he chatted with Katyusha, a peculiar voice reached his ears. "Let me tell you, little kitty, that guy with the black hair laughing is an idiot. Brother Da Hei said that a while ago, this fool ate something disgusting and kept bragging about it. You should stay away from him now that you're here."
The sudden voice made Xu Li's face twitch uncontrollably. Nearby, Anna and Eva also heard it and were laughing so hard in his arms that they could hardly breathe. Xu Li pushed the two sisters away and stood up, walking to the courtyard entrance where a large mutt lay on the ground, softly whining at the Maine Coon perched above its doghouse.
"Hey, you silly dog, are you spreading rumors about me?"
Xu Li squatted down in front of it. The little dirt clod was thrown at the big dog, which couldn't bear such humiliation and immediately bared its teeth, slowly getting up as if preparing to pounce and bite. Just then, Xu Li's right hand fell on a large iron shovel standing nearby.
"It’s what Brother Da Hei and Big Black Brother said. Go talk to them if you have a problem."
