She was full.
Xu Li was not surprised by their response; they had eaten pig trotters, roast duck, and sliced duck, along with so many custard buns and water that a large bottle of orange juice was also empty. He glanced at Natasha, who was wiping her mouth with a napkin. "Mom, are you full?"
"I'm stuffed," she replied with a smile as she stood up. "Are we ready to pay?"
"Yes."
He helped the sisters put on their coats, and just as they stepped out of the private room, Eva whispered in Xu Li's ear, "Misha, I need to go to the bathroom."
He called over a waiter and exchanged a few words. The sisters and Natasha followed the waiter to the restroom while he leisurely trailed behind. Once the three of them finished washing their hands, they happily returned to the hotel.
The next morning, he went out to buy steamed buns, soy milk, and fried dough sticks. The sisters were still lying in bed, softly snoring. After finishing his meal and wiping his mouth, he said to Natasha, "Mom, I'm going to run some errands for my documents and check on the old house. If I come back late for lunch, there are instant noodles and cookies in the room for you and Anna to snack on."
"Okay."
Natasha nodded while drinking her soy milk. This was Xu Li's hometown; there was no need for an outsider to say much.
Around nine-thirty in the morning, a car pulled up outside the police station. Xu Haigui got out wearing a black coat and sporting a slicked-back hairstyle while holding a folder of documents. He looked around before heading inside the station.
In the lobby where documents were processed, he scanned the area but did not see his eldest son. Just as he took out his phone, someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and gasped; standing before him was Xiao Nianqing, who was significantly taller than him despite Xu Haigui being just over six feet tall.
The right side of Nianqing's face bore some familiarity, but his left cheek had several long scars that looked more like claw marks than knife wounds. Xu Haigui tentatively opened his mouth. "Ali?"
"Do you have your documents?"
Xu Li looked down at the bag in his right hand and walked over to a counter. He opened the folder and took out his identification card along with some photocopies. "Hello, I want to open an account."
The young lady behind the counter stared at Xu Li for a moment before taking his ID card and scanning it. She looked up in surprise before lowering her head again. "Is this you?"
The ID was issued three years ago when Xu Haigui brought Xu Li in to apply for it. Back then, Xu Li had a cute chubby face, but now he appeared as a scarred young man whose face had changed so much that it was hard to tell he had grown up at all. Xu Li remained silent for a few seconds before grabbing Xu Haigui's shoulder and pulling him to the counter. "You ask him; he knows."
"Who are you?"
Faced with the young lady's skeptical gaze, Xu Haigui forced a bitter smile and said, "I'm his father."
He handed over their household registration document with a wry smile and nodded slightly. "Thank you."
The young lady glanced between Xu Haigui and Xu Li, who had just lit a cigarette, frowning slightly before standing up to take the materials elsewhere. As soon as she left the counter, Xu Haigui turned around only to see Xu Li exhaling smoke. He frowned disapprovingly. "How old are you to be smoking?"
"None of your business."
"You—"
Xu Haigui was infuriated by Xu Li's cold attitude and pushed him lightly. Xu Li didn’t even sway: "I’m your father; how can you talk to me like that?"
"Are you my father? Do you even deserve that title?"
The sudden shout brought an abrupt silence to the hall. Xu Li raised a finger and poked Xu Haigui in the chest. "You should check your conscience. Which husband sleeps with other women after his wife is diagnosed with cancer? Which father sends his child, not even fourteen, abroad and doesn’t care about them, only sending a message during the New Year? Tell me."
