Little Guy gently tapped his face before getting up. As he turned around, he saw Xu Li standing at the door. The hospital room fell into silence. The girl who was acting as a translator shrank back behind Kong Yan Hong, frightened by Xu Li's appearance.
Xu Li thought for a moment but said nothing. He picked up his keys and wallet and left the room. Xu Haigui and Natasha nodded and hurried after him, grabbing Xu Li's wrist. Xu Li instinctively tried to push him away, but upon seeing the redness in his eyes and his tightly pressed lips, he lowered his arm and shook off Xu Haigui's hand. "I'm doing well now, with a warm family. You've met the child; just like before, please don't disturb me anymore."
With that, he strode away. Xu Haigui's jaw trembled as he sighed deeply and slapped himself across the face. He went outside the hospital, lit a cigarette, and squatted down. About ten minutes later, Kong Yan Hong returned with the girl and found him. Xu Haigui handed a small red envelope to the girl. "Thank you for your hard work, Xiao He. You can go now."
"Thank you, General Xu."
The girl took the red envelope and quickly left. She had thought today was just a volunteer shift but ended up witnessing something big at the boss's house and even received a red envelope. She pulled out the money inside and exclaimed in surprise; she actually got paid.
With both snacks to enjoy and money in hand, she wished she could come every day.
"Is this Ms. Anna?"
The next morning, while changing the baby's diaper, he received the anticipated phone call. Xu Li appeared by the window. "Hello, I'm her husband."
There was a noticeable pause on the other end before they switched to Mandarin: "Your visa is a tourist visa; it has expired."
"My wife just had a baby yesterday; can we renew it?"
After a long silence on the line: "Yes, but you need to bring your documents to the local police station."
"Okay, I need to register the baby anyway; I'll go this afternoon."
After hanging up, he continued changing diapers and then served Anna and the others their meals. At noon, Mother-in-law arrived with a thermos. After chatting with Xu Li and Natasha for a while, she got up to leave, heading to the hospital first to get a certificate before going home to gather documents for the police station.
"What name do you plan to give your child?"
The clerk looked at Xu Li and then nodded after a moment of silence: "Please wait a moment."
He stepped outside and called Xu Haigui: "The naming rights are yours."
On the other end of the line, Xu Haigui tightened his fists: "Firstborn is Xu Weihua; second is Xu Weixia."
"Alright."
He hung up and returned to the office area. About half an hour later, he emerged from the police station with a folder of documents. Looking up at the blazing sun in the sky, two tears slowly rolled down his cheeks.
Although there was no tradition of confinement in Slavic culture, Xu Li insisted that they observe it fully because childbirth was taxing on health; every mother cared deeply for her child. Natasha didn’t say much but smiled warmly as she saw Xu Li bustling around with both adults and children.
After the sisters completed their confinement period, Xu Li began preparing for their return to Bratsk. He bought plenty of their favorite foods and arranged for them to be sent via express delivery to Heihe before being transported through Yuliya's supply channels.
Every four or five days, several large packages would arrive at Heihe via courier. In the living room, he was busy packing kitchenware and seasonings while watching Natasha soothe the baby to sleep. "Is there anything else you need, Mom? While we're still here, we can buy it in advance."
