The village where I grew up is quite desolate. This year, my brother-in-law opened a ranch in the village. He is making significant strides and needs someone to help him manage the ranch. There are plenty of houses left over from when the older folks came to cultivate the land together; many of them have returned to their hometowns, leaving those houses behind.
Ivan drove while occasionally checking the road conditions. "You don’t need to worry about food; there’s plenty of land there for you to grow potatoes and other crops. Meat is not lacking either. There’s a ranch in the village, and if you drive east for an hour and a half, you’ll find a small town where you can find everything you need."
"What about social connections?" Andreev asked, voicing his biggest concern. It’s well-known that Slavic people usually don’t care much about things outside their own circle. Ivan chuckled, "Don’t worry, old buddy. Your family will be welcomed there; those older folks might go crazy with joy. People in our village love a lively atmosphere."
"That’s good to hear."
They drove from dawn until deep into the night, taking turns at the wheel. By around two in the morning, they stopped at the gate of a small courtyard. Xiao Hei heard the sound of the engine and realized someone had arrived; he immediately started barking loudly: "Woof! Woof! Get out here, there are strangers!"
Soon, lights flickered on in the courtyard, and Xu Li, bare-chested, approached with irritation, ready to kick Xiao Hei. Unfazed, Xiao Hei bared his teeth and snapped back: "Awoo!"
"Just wait!"
Xu Li quickly pulled back his foot, shot a glare at Xiao Hei, and opened the door. After the car pulled in, he stepped outside to check the dirt road. Once Ivan got out of the car, he embraced his little sister’s husband tightly and patted his back vigorously: "Misha, you’ve gotten stronger again!"
"Just keeping busy with practice."
Xu Li released his brother-in-law just as Andrei came out of the house. Ivan was about to introduce everyone when Andrei stepped aside: "Let’s go inside and rest; it’s time for something to eat."
His words were warm-hearted. Andreev stepped forward to shake his hand: "Hello, Uncle Andrei."
The old man patted Andreev on the arm: "Bring the kids inside to rest."
Once the family settled into the living room, Natasha woke up, greeted them briefly, and headed into the kitchen to get busy. Xu Li closed the door behind him and saw Natasha boiling water. After thinking for a moment, he decided to make a large portion of Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin; after a long day on the road, that tangy flavor would encourage them to eat more.
Natasha prepared a pot of Tomato Egg Noodles and sliced some Lava and Meat Sausage. Xu Li also brought out a big platter of Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin. His appearance made several kids in the living room instinctively shrink back their necks. Ivan chuckled as he stood up and patted Xu Li on the back while introducing him: "Makarov, this is my little sister’s husband; he’s very easygoing—don’t let his appearance fool you."
As head of the family, Andreev stood up to reciprocate Xu Li's hospitality and expressed his gratitude for the meal. Xu Li looked around; there was one big girl and three younger children, with one woman holding a sleeping baby.
"After eating, you can rest at home; all the rooms are ready for you. Your family will need to redo the plumbing and electrical work."
He reached out to pat one little boy on the head: "Eat plenty; if it’s not enough, there’s more."
"Thank you, Uncle!"
