Where is Zhuo Ya?
Xu Li scanned the area but couldn't find his daughter. He turned to Anna, who was happily munching on a rib. "She went to the Valye Family. Today is their youngest daughter's birthday, and I asked Zhuo Ya to take a gift over."
"That's good," he nodded, inviting Anan and the others to eat. He took his time, occasionally checking on the Old Couple and Anna, while also sharing a drink with Anan. Despite the busyness, he was enjoying himself.
Anan noticed something was off and, after Xu Li wiped Anna's and Eva's mouths, quietly asked, "Brother Xu, are both of them your sisters-in-law?"
His Mandarin was clear enough that the children could understand. Xu Li nodded, "Yes, didn't you see?"
"Huh? Da Mao also follows a monogamous system?"
Anan expressed his surprise, while Xu Li chuckled. "Anna and I registered our marriage in Da Mao. Eva is Anna's biological sister. It's so sparsely populated here; who would come to check?"
"Besides, my brother-in-law is the police chief in Irkutsk, and my brother works at the local railway bureau. I have a relative who is the deputy secretary of the Irkutsk province. Even if it were discovered, what could happen?"
Anan realized Xu Li was hinting at him and immediately gave a thumbs-up. "Brother Xu, you're doing really well here."
"I can only say I'm lucky."
Seeing that his mother-in-law had finished eating, Xu Li went to the kitchen to cut some watermelon and put it on a plate. When he returned, his father-in-law was contentedly smacking his lips.
He sighed softly. "Dad, you've been drinking again."
"I'm full now; I'm going to sit in the yard."
Andrei slowly got up, took a piece of watermelon, and walked outside while eating. Natasha slurped up the last bit of noodles, wiped her mouth with a napkin, then took some watermelon out to feed Xiong Da and Xiong Er.
Xu Li filled his glass with wine and pulled out a cigarette. He gestured but lit it himself when Anan shook his head. "How long have you been here?"
"Over a year."
Anan walked alongside him. "It's nice here, but some places still reject us Chinese."
"That's everywhere; there's nothing surprising about it."
Xu Li blew out a smoke ring. "When I first arrived, I was bullied at school for being underage. Eventually, I decided to rent my own place."
"Your experience sounds like something out of a novel."
When Anan learned that Xu Li had personally taken down the person who brought him here—who happened to be his brother-in-law—the shock was evident on his face. Xu Li smiled slightly. "It's because my wife has limited mental capacity; she has an IQ of only about ten years old and is particularly timid. The reputation of Chinese people being weak led them to choose me."
Watching Eva happily eat her watermelon, he pulled out a tissue to wipe the sisters' mouths. "At first, I thought about resisting, but then I decided to settle down here instead. My mother-in-law treats me well beyond words; my father-in-law regards me as his own son. They accept and care for me—that's enough!"
The two of them were drinking and chatting, and before they knew it, the dishes on the table had been devoured by the children. Xu Li went to the kitchen to fry a plate of peanuts and sliced two cucumbers, then returned to continue drinking with Anan.
Before long, the living room was left with just the two of them, still drinking and talking, while everyone else had gone to their rooms to sleep. As Anan listened to Xu Li recount the scene of his one-on-one encounter with a grizzly bear, he couldn't help but express his admiration. This guy was truly fierce; if it had been him, he would have run away long ago.
