"Come, taste my cooking!"
Eva said with a cheerful smile as she piled a lot of dishes onto Xu Li's plate. Anna cupped her face with both hands, her eyes sparkling with joy as she exchanged glances with her husband. "What’s wrong? Don’t you recognize us?"
I could hardly believe it.
Before I could finish my sentence, tears began to stream down my face. Anna and Eva wiped away my tears, but as they did, they started to cry too, and soon the three of us were in a tight embrace, sobbing together.
All the events of these past years had unfolded before our eyes, yet for some reason, we could never fully express ourselves. It felt as if we were trapped in a soundproof room.
Anna took a bite of the Sweet and Sour Ribs and said, "When I was little, I didn’t want to come out; I thought hiding inside was just fine. But then my brothers brought you here. Your love and kindness toward me felt like sweet honey pouring into my heart."
The birth of the child made me confront myself. I wanted to escape that soundproof room, but I couldn’t find the exit, and slowly I gave up.
Until just two days ago at our wedding, when I desperately wanted to burst out, hold you tightly, kiss you endlessly, and shout that I do!
I didn’t want to be a bystander anymore, so I kept banging against the walls until I lost consciousness. The first thing I saw when I woke up was you.
She put down her chopsticks and raised her hands to cradle Xu Li's face, carefully examining the man before her. With a playful pout, she leaned in and said, "Misha, I love you, my husband! Do you mind our relationship?"
Eva spat out a bone and wiped her mouth with a napkin. "Why would I mind? I don’t think there’s any man who can do better than you; you are my husband!"
Xu Li rubbed his face with his hand. "After we finish eating, let’s go to my brother’s house. I think Mom and Dad will be very happy."
"Of course!"
Eva still liked to speak in an innocent tone. The three of them exchanged smiles and dug into their food. After finishing their meal and taking a shower, the sisters each took an arm of him as they headed out the door.
They first stopped by a flower shop to buy two bouquets before arriving at Ivan's Family. With Xu Li's financial support and increased wages from Yuliya's shop earnings, they had also bought a duplex apartment.
"Mom! Mom!"
As soon as Anna and Eva entered the house, they tightly embraced Natasha. Natasha looked at her son-in-law with some confusion; she knew he would never bully her daughter.
Xu Li smiled broadly, his eyes slightly red-rimmed. "Mom, Anna and Eva are all grown up now; they’re not those little girls anymore."
"Really?"
Natasha couldn't believe it at first, but Anna and Eva pulled her into the living room to chat. As they talked, tears began to fall from her eyes as she hugged her daughters tightly, kissing one on the left cheek and one on the right while repeatedly thanking God.
Old Andrei sat quietly on the balcony, reading a book, but tears blurred his vision. He took off his glasses and accepted the tissue that Xu Li handed him to wipe the corners of his eyes. Xu Li crouched down and wrapped her arms around her father-in-law's shoulders. "How about staying at my place for a few days? You can try your daughter's cooking. The dishes they make are top-notch."
