Angelina had eaten Wagyu beef before, but this time felt different. Surrounded by an atmosphere akin to being the center of attention, she was treated with utmost care as she enjoyed her meal.
Her grandfather and grandmother, both with warm smiles, two exceptionally beautiful aunts, a stern-looking yet kind uncle, and several peers were all gathered around the dinner table, chatting and laughing as they shared their evening meal. Such a lively atmosphere was rare in her home; it usually felt quiet and lonely since her father was often busy making money, leaving her and her mother to dine together while the servants silently attended to them.
"Here comes the pepper-salt ribs!" Xu Li announced, bringing a large platter of golden, crispy beef ribs to Angelina's side. "Try some, girl!"
Despite feeling full, Angelina couldn't resist the temptation of the delicious ribs. She took a big piece from her boyfriend's chopsticks and mimicked Zhuo Ya's way of holding it in her hands to bite into it. The savory meat combined with a hint of spice awakened her taste buds, and she savored every bite.
Xu Li watched his family enjoying their meal with a smile. His gaze fell on his father-in-law, who was eating slowly, seemingly lost in thought. After considering for a moment, he decided against offering any fruit wine; he didn't want to burden the old man.
Meanwhile, Little White, their four-month-old puppy, came into the living room with a playful bark. He jumped onto Xu Li's lap and looked up at him expectantly. Xu Li picked out a rib with some cartilage for him. "Go eat over there," he said.
Little White grabbed the rib and settled down by Xu Li's feet to gnaw on it. Zhuo Ya, sitting next to Xu Li, pouted at her father playfully. "Are you full?" Xu Li asked with a chuckle as he handed his daughter a napkin to wipe her greasy mouth.
"Yeah, I'm going to read in the study," Zhuo Ya replied as she left the dining table. She patted Little White on the head as he followed her with his unfinished bone in his mouth.
Xu Li glanced at his daughter before looking back at Angelina, who was surrounded by his wife and son. He couldn't help but smile at the scene before him as he continued eating with his father-in-law and Zhang Ji Niang.
"Mom, are you asleep?" Angelina asked as she lay on her soft bed and initiated a video call with Qi Qin. Yelena appeared on the screen with a face mask on, leaning against her headboard. "Not yet! Have you arrived?"
"Yes! Nikola's family is really nice," Angelina replied excitedly about the dinner they just had. She recounted how Xu Weihua had been teased by her father and mimicked Xu Li and Anna's tones while telling Qi Qin about it, making Yelena laugh so hard that she nearly dislodged her face mask.
Alexander, who had just finished showering, found it amusing once he understood what had happened. The joyful atmosphere in their home was palpable. When he learned that Xu Li had even slaughtered a newly introduced Wagyu cow for their daughter's visit, he nodded in satisfaction; it showed how much they cared for their daughter without treating her casually just because she was ordinary.
After watching their daughter take pictures of the guest room arrangement, both parents felt reassured about her upcoming life. However, after over twenty hours of traveling by plane and bus, Angelina soon dozed off mid-conversation.
Yelena gazed at the video screen showing her daughter sleeping cutely; she kissed the screen before ending the call and peeled off her face mask to snuggle up next to her husband for a peaceful sleep.
In the study, aside from Little White’s soft whimpers, only the crackling sound of burning firewood could be heard. Xu Li placed a plate of sliced watermelon on the small tea table beside the lounge chair. "Have some watermelon," he offered.
"I don't want to eat," Zhuo Ya said, turning her back to him. Xu Li crouched down in front of her, but before he could say anything, the little girl turned away again. He wasn't angry; instead, he reached out to gently touch her hair. "Did someone upset you? Tell Daddy, and I'll take care of it."
"Hmph," she huffed playfully, covering her face with a book and ignoring him. Xu Li rolled his eyes and stood up to leave. "Get to bed early, okay? Daddy's going now."
