Irina, despite her small and slender frame, had skin that was exceptionally fair and delicate, unlike Anna's coarse complexion. Her long, tousled flaxen hair fell lazily over her shoulders, and she stood at no more than five feet tall. In Da Mao's eyes, she was considered a third-class disability, yet she possessed all the qualities one could hope for.
She curled up like a little kitten in Xu Li's arms, sharing her family situation: "You are really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly." She continued, "When I was very young, my dad froze to death outside due to alcoholism. My mom remarried when she brought me to live with my new dad."
"But my stepdad isn't nice to me. He has a daughter and a son of his own, and my mom never scolds them. Whenever something goes wrong, it's always my fault. I know my mom is trying to protect me, so I always go along with her and admit my mistakes."
"Later, during summer vacation, my stepdad wanted to take my mom on a trip and left us kids with our grandparents. My grandma treated me well and made delicious food every day. But the boys in the village liked to bully me and wouldn’t let me tell anyone at home; they just kept hitting me."
"After that, I never dared to go back to my grandma's house unless my mom went with me. Eventually, I transferred to a new school and became desk mates with Zhuo Ya. She was really nice to me."
"I didn't want to be separated from Zhuo Ya, so I followed her around because she gave me a sense of security. I had no idea what life would be like without her. I liked being with Zhuo Ya; she let me do whatever I wanted."
"Every time you came to pick up Zhuo Ya, you would take me along too. Whatever Zhuo Ya had, I had as well. At first, I was scared of you, but over time, my feelings changed."
As Xu Li gently stroked Irina's hair and listened to her heartfelt words, he couldn't help but think of the group of female workers from the village. Their experiences seemed surprisingly similar. He sighed inwardly; there was such a vast difference in their ages.
"I don't mind," he reassured her softly. "I really don't mind."
Irina hugged him tightly. "Please don’t send me away. I don’t want to go back to how things were before. I don’t want my mom to have a hard time. Ever since I told my family about my relationship with Zhuo Ya, my stepdad has been smiling more and has been much kinder to my mom. I don’t want her to struggle anymore. And only by being with Zhuo Ya can I be close to you!"
The living room fell into a long silence. After a while, Xu Li carried her back upstairs and tucked her into bed. "Later, you and Zhuo Ya should ask the teacher for a few days off. I'll take you both back for a visit. As long as Zhuo Ya's mom agrees, this place will be your home."
Zhuo Ya was curled up in the blanket playing on her phone when she made a face at him, which made his cheeks twitch in irritation as he clenched his fists tightly before finally going downstairs alone to calm down. Zhuo Ya had her own plans; Irina was just too beautiful!
Those starry blue eyes, that sweet little mouth, and her soft body that seemed boneless made her intoxicatingly appealing; spending every day with her felt insufficient.
But she wasn’t truly hers; Zhuo Ya wanted to keep Irina by her side forever without sharing her with any strangers. Thus, he was the best bridge between them!
Many times when Irina drank too much, she would mumble about Uncle Makarov, especially when she was sound asleep; the little girl had a habit of talking in her dreams.
When he brought Zhuo Ya and Irina back to the courtyard and parked the car, he hesitated before getting out. Zhuo Ya glanced at him before getting out and taking Irina inside the house while Xu Li silently smoked in the car for a long time before finally gritting his teeth and stepping into the living room.
Anna and Eva eagerly took turns hugging Irina as if she were not just a classmate but an angel who had snuck down from heaven—so adorable that both women wanted to hold her forever. Under Xu Li's and Anna's puzzled gazes, they pulled everyone into the bedroom and closed the doors and windows.
Looking at Anna and Eva before glancing at Zhuo Ya and Irina sitting silently on the edge of the bed with their heads down, he forced a smile: "Dear ones, there's something I need to talk to you about."
Anna and Eva furrowed their brows slowly; their husband never spoke to them this way—he was usually straightforward with his words. Anna remained calm as she quietly watched him while Eva’s impatience showed: "Well then, go ahead."
"Let’s see… where do I start?"
Zhuo Ya suddenly looked up at Anna and Eva: "A couple of nights ago…"
