Xu Li got out of the car and took the bags from Li Xiang, placing them in the trunk. Once they were all in the car, he stepped on the gas and drove Zhuo Ya and Irina back to their house near the suburbs. Anna and Eva had already prepared dinner, and Eva set the table, saying, "Let's eat."
Anna untied her apron and went upstairs, quickly returning with two beautifully wrapped gift boxes, placing them in front of the girls. "These are gifts from your mom."
Eva playfully pinched Irina's cheek. "Open them and see!"
Irina eagerly opened her gift box, covering her mouth with her little hand as her eyes widened in disbelief. Anna smiled and said, "Mommy and Daddy can't be here every day, so I got you a toy for self-defense."
Inside the gift box lay a compact little pistol with a four-round capacity, perfect for self-protection. It was painted pink and adorned with a cartoon bear design. The little girl took it out, unable to put it down.
On Zhuo Ya's side was a long-desired Sand Eagle. This item was hard to come by; it was obtained through Andreev, a former comrade who specialized in selling such things after retiring. He managed to get one for her, along with an extra magazine and some bullets.
"The nanny your uncle found for you is from his unit; she'll take care of your meals and pick you up. Make sure to lock the doors and windows at night. Next time your dad comes, he'll bring little Hua over too."
Xu Li watched them play with their toy guns, smiling. "Let's eat."
"Yes, let's eat quickly," Anna chimed in. The two little girls finished their meal in a hurry before rushing upstairs with their beloved toys. Xu Li leaned back on the sofa, enjoying a cigarette while planning to watch some television when he received a call from Lao Si. The video showed Xu Jiaguo's face, which looked less chubby than before.
He said eagerly, "Dad, big brother is famous now!"
Xu Li replied casually, "And then?"
"I want to be a star too!"
Seeing his son's eager expression, he slowly shook his head. "You and Old Five aren't cut out for that."
"Why not? I'm way better looking than big brother!"
Not wanting to indulge his child's misplaced confidence, Xu Li began to discourage him without hesitation. "What star looks like you two? You can't control your eating habits and refuse to exercise. Have you looked in the mirror? You're as round as a ball! Why not focus on school instead?"
"I'll go find Mom!"
Little Guy was on the verge of tears from his words. After hanging up, he called Anna: "Mom! Dad just scolded me for being fat like a ball!"
As he exaggerated his father's words, it didn't ignite her anger. The couple wasn't far apart; she could hear her husband's loud voice scolding their son. She and Eva listened closely while examining the video of Little Guy's pouty face, unable to help but smile. "Your dad isn't wrong; how can you be a star looking like that? You should focus on your studies and grow up to be a good child who contributes to the Motherland—like being a doctor or a police officer or even a lawyer."
"I don't want that! Big brother is famous now! A lot of girls in my class are talking about them! I want to be a star too! Old Five wants to be one just like me; you have to agree!"
Another round little face squeezed into the screen, nodding vigorously in agreement: "Yes! Yes! I want to be just like big brother too! I want to be a star!"
Xu Li took Anna's phone from her hand and shouted at the two kids on video: "What’s so great about being a star? Call me when you lose weight without bouncing back and when your grades are in the top ten of your school—then we can talk about dreams!"
After ending the call, she placed her phone on the dining table, curled her lips, and flopped onto the sofa. What is wrong with these kids nowadays? One by one, they all want to be internet celebrities or some kind of idol. At this rate, they’re all going to end up useless.
