Peter released his arms and climbed off her, rubbing his side where she had elbowed him. He extended his right hand and said, "You still have such strength; you could be a bit gentler."
Zhuo Ya grabbed Peter's big hand to get up and patted him on the head. "You're definitely different now; you should take it easy in the future."
Once the siblings exited the iron cage, Zhuo Ya was naturally greeted warmly by her three sisters-in-law. Xu Weihua and Xu Weixia hugged Peter and simultaneously gave him a thumbs-up, saying, "Awesome!"
Peter smiled and put on the coat that the eldest had handed him. "Let’s head back inside; it’s freezing out here."
The group closed the wooden door and returned to the living room across the way. They had barely settled down when Valery's granddaughter arrived with over ten little friends, coming to the Village Chief Grandpa's house for snacks. Eva, wearing an apron, touched their little faces and brought them some treats. After thinking for a moment about the kitchen cellar, she took out two watermelons, washed them, and cut them into pieces.
When the little ones saw the watermelon, Grandma Eva's voice became sweeter with each exclamation. Laughter erupted from the children as they enjoyed the watermelon. The little girl looked at Eva with wide eyes and said, "Grandma Eva, they want to play with firecrackers."
"Is it you who wants to play?"
Eva pinched her slightly frozen red cheeks and went to the storage room to grab a shoebox. Inside were neatly arranged firecrackers. She handed each of the little ones two rolls and lit them up before clapping her hands. "Go ahead and play!"
"Oh, let’s go play with firecrackers!"
After finishing their snacks and watermelon, the kids rushed out of the living room, and soon loud bangs echoed outside along with their cheerful laughter. Even Angelina felt tempted to join in.
Eva handed two rolls to Angelina. "You’ve never played before; these firecrackers have quick-burning fuses. Once you light them, throw them out quickly! It’s safest to stick them in the snow and light them with incense."
"Okay, I understand, Mom."
Angelina took the long incense that Eva handed her along with two rolls of firecrackers and changed her shoes before heading outside. Xu Weixia followed her out. Eva noticed Kamila looking eager but hesitant to speak up about wanting to play. She smiled and handed Kamila a lit incense stick along with two rolls of firecrackers. "You’re still a child; go have fun."
"Thank you, Mom!"
Kamila and Lisa happily changed their shoes and went outside while Xu Weihua followed them as well. When Peter finished getting dressed in his bedroom and came to the living room, he saw a table full of watermelon rinds and snack wrappers. He walked into the kitchen, picked up a piece of freshly fried chicken wing, and asked while eating, "Mom, where are they?"
Eva flipped the chicken wings with chopsticks. "They’re outside playing with firecrackers."
"Why didn’t anyone call me? Those rascals!"
Peter immediately felt displeased and spat out a chicken bone beside Xiao Zhi. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Xiao Zhi's stainless steel food bowl. His eyes lit up mischievously as he grabbed another chicken wing and offered it to Xiao Zhi while patting its head. "This is for you since you’ve been so good; I’ll borrow your food bowl for a bit."
After saying that, he took Xiao Zhi’s stainless steel bowl while no one was paying attention and dashed outside.
Xu Li strolled home leisurely with a cigarette in his mouth while cattle and sheep were being processed nearby. Yegor would bring them over shortly; since there wasn’t much for him to do there, he thought it would be better to spend time with the kids instead. They had all grown up now, and he rarely got to see them throughout the year; he needed to cherish these moments.
Bang!
Just as he reached the gate of the courtyard, he heard a muffled sound followed by a stainless steel bowl landing perfectly on his head. Originally laughing heartily, Peter immediately stuffed his incense stick and firecrackers into his girlfriend's hands before turning around and running back inside.
Xu Li pulled out his belt from around his waist, ignoring Peter and the others as he folded it in half while walking into the house.
