I have to maintain my figure, and I’ve never had a big appetite.
As I spoke, I glanced over at the Gan Fan Brothers, Xu Jiaguo was shoveling rice while staring at me. "Uncle, why are you looking at us? Do you think we eat too much? We’re not even eating your rice, so what’s with the stare?"
Xu Jiaping shot a glare at me. "The food Uncle Huang makes is really delicious. If you’re not going to eat, it’s just perfect for us." He then picked up two more pieces of cured meat and continued to dig into his meal. He Ling looked at my awkward expression and chuckled to ease the tension. "Boys are still growing; they need to eat more."
"Yes, yes," I chuckled awkwardly, sitting quietly by the side. The atmosphere at the table grew a bit quiet. Huang San Shi lowered his head to spit out a fishbone and raised his glass to toast with Sha Yi and He Ling, completely ignoring Du Tao. He had no good feelings towards this kneeling guy.
"Xiao Si Xiao Wu," he called out.
"Huh?" The brothers turned to the old cured meat expert, who smiled as he set down his chopsticks. "Old He says you both are over six feet tall. Is that true?"
"Uh, yes," Xu Jiaguo replied, his eyes darting around as he grinned. "We’re just a little over six feet."
"Wow, that little bit is quite a lot!" Sha Yi laughed as he put down his glass. "With your size, you could easily play basketball."
"Hehehe." The brothers chuckled and continued eating. Wang Xue rested her elbows on the table, propping her chin in her hands as she watched them devour their food. She couldn’t help but swallow hard; these two were eating so heartily that she felt her own stomach growling.
"I'm full now." Xu Jiaguo finished the last sip of soup before putting down his bowl and chopsticks. He took the napkin Reba handed him to wipe his mouth. "Uncle Huang, this cured meat is really delicious! How did you make it?"
Huang San Shi smiled back. "It’s mainly thanks to Old He’s good curing technique; I just added some chili and stir-fried it a bit. Isn’t that how you do it over there?"
"This is my first time eating cured meat." Xu Jiaguo was still savoring the flavor of the cured meat. "My grandma doesn’t let us eat preserved foods; she says they’re bad for our health. Back in our hometown, we didn’t have these either—just fresh beef and lamb. The most we got were some Xun Yu and Meat Sausage."
Sha Yi took a swig of his drink. "Isn’t your hometown in Jinling?"
"Nope! Our hometown is in Siberia; we only moved to Jinling when we were in our teens to live with our grandparents."
Xu Jiaping also put down his bowl and took the napkin Jiang Xin handed him to wipe his mouth. "My grandma’s cooking is quite bland; at first, we weren’t used to it, but gradually we got used to it. Still, I miss my dad’s barbecue."
He Ling smiled as he watched the two brothers shaking their heads. "The barbecue here isn't bad either. When we get back, I'll take you to try it."
"Sounds great!" they replied eagerly.
As he observed their cheerful banter, Yu glanced around the courtyard. A few red dots in the corner caught his attention, raising an eyebrow before he turned back to the two Little Guys with a smile. "I heard you just graduated from high school. How did you do on your exams? Which university are you planning to apply to?"
Xu Jiaping chuckled, "We're thinking of applying to the Military Arts University, but unfortunately, our scores are a bit disappointing."
"Oh?" Huang San Shi perked up with interest. "What scores did you guys get on your exams?"
