The village chief, the woman has woken up.
At the Bafra Gym, Xu Li, who was lifting weights, put down the dumbbells and wiped his sweat with a towel before putting on his military coat and heading back to the bedroom. The woman was using a breast pump while the baby drank from a bottle, making soft sucking sounds.
A little girl, around two or three years old, was nervously burrowing under the blankets while holding the baby. The woman's previously pale and even slightly ashen face had regained some color, but she was now covering her face and crying. Xu Li pulled up a chair and quietly sat by the bed, watching her.
Anna and Eva had gone to the living room to chat, preparing some plain porridge for them along with sour cucumbers and homemade meat floss. They placed it on the bedside table before stepping out. The woman cried for a long time before finally wiping her tears away. As she raised her hand, her worn cotton coat slipped off, revealing large patches of fair skin and brown flesh.
"Are you Mr. Makarov?"
Xu Li nodded. "Do we know each other?"
The chatter in the living room immediately faded away as Anna and Eva leaned in closer to listen intently. The woman looked at the fierce and strong man in front of her and instinctively shrank back, only stopping when she bumped into her daughter. With a hint of fear in her eyes, she asked, "Can you let us go? We won't report you."
Seeing the man frowning at her made her tremble in fear. She felt utterly helpless; she had lost her job and had nothing left. If this man refused to spare her and her child, she would have no choice but to consider suicide or resort to becoming a streetwalker to raise her child.
"I've never seen you before; why would I target you? And why would you report me?"
Xu Li frowned as he stared at the woman. "I haven't received any court summons."
"You must be someone important; those wolves in sheep's clothing wouldn't dare disturb you," she said, tears streaming down her face again. "Please let us go! My husband was sentenced to eleven years, our house was taken by loan sharks, I've lost my job, and all the money I had was stolen by them. We really have nowhere else to turn."
"Your husband..." Xu Li muttered under his breath before suddenly looking up at her intently for a long time. The woman buried her head into her arms, unable to meet his gaze. Xu Li sighed. "Eat something first. I have no grievances against you; I won't harm you."
After saying that, he left the bedroom and went straight to his study. Just as he was about to close the door, Anna and Eva squeezed in behind him. He instructed his wife to shut the door and called Ivan: "A woman came to my house with two children. If it weren't for my habit of waking up early, they might have frozen to death at my doorstep."
Ivan, who was smoking in his office, paused for a moment before frowning slightly. "They didn't die? That shouldn't be possible; how could they survive out there all night in this cold? They must be lucky!"
Xu Li felt a chill run down his spine: "Brother, if you're going after someone, don't do it like this! It's bad luck for outsiders to die in our village right after New Year's."
"That woman is the wife of that man who fought with Zhuo Ya last year," Ivan replied casually. "She doesn't know when to back off and keeps trying to sue me. I gave her your address in detail and even drew her a map. On the way, I had someone pretend to be a loan shark and rob her of her money. I thought about letting her freeze outside in this cold; I even considered sending someone to collect the body."
