After thinking for a moment, I went to the fridge and scooped a large bowl of chilled mung bean soup. I covered it with plastic wrap and placed it in the basket. As I stepped out of the cafeteria, I saw Zhuo Ya riding back. I noticed her carrying a basket and asked curiously, "Lana, where are you going?"
Feeling a bit shy, Lana brushed her hair back and replied, "I'm bringing some mung bean soup to Ivan. Drinking soup on such a hot day will help cool him down."
"Oh, you're delivering it to Ivan," Zhuo Ya said, elongating her words. She handed over the reins of her Black Horse to Lana, then climbed into her newly bought Mighty Warrior V, a true beast of the land. "I'll take Natasha home first."
"Thanks!" Lana nodded gratefully at Zhuo Ya as she kicked her horse into motion towards the vast Cornfield, carefully guiding her horse alongside the large vehicle. "Hey, Ivan! Ivan!"
A man poked his head out of the car window and teased, "Are you sure you’re calling for Ivan, little girl?" He pointed far off to where Xiao Hei was standing. "Don’t just shout Ivan; be careful or those guys will laugh at you."
"Thank you, Uncle Gennady," Lana said shyly as she urged her horse forward at a gallop. The man watched the young woman’s curves bounce on the horse's back and couldn't help but sigh in envy. Youth was truly a blessing; her figure was stunning. He remembered how his wife used to be even more attractive than Lana when they were younger. Time had not been kind.
Thinking about his wife's current state, he sighed again and reached for his cigarette pack on the dashboard, lighting one up with a puff. "I need to ask that kid Yegor when he plans to hunt reindeer; I should bring something good home to make up for it!"
Finally, Lana found Ivan spraying pesticide. As she arrived on horseback, the vehicle came to a halt and the spraying stopped. He leaned out of the window and locked eyes with the beautiful woman for a moment. Feeling shy, she brushed her hair back again and carefully pulled out some spilled mung bean soup from the basket. She lifted the plastic wrap and handed it to Ivan with some effort, whispering, "It's hot out; drink this."
Ivan took the cold stainless steel bowl and took big gulps of the sweet soup that was both refreshing and soothing to his parched insides. It flowed into his dry heart just like honey—sweet and comforting.
"Thank you! This is delicious," he said, his face slightly flushed as he handed the bowl back to Lana. Their fingers brushed against each other briefly, causing Lana's cheeks to redden as she placed the bowl back in the basket. She looked up at Ivan, who also seemed a bit embarrassed. Habitually brushing her hair back again, she said, "Thanks for standing up for Natasha the other day. Are you free tonight? I’d like to invite you over for dinner."
"I... I have a lot of tasks here; I might finish late," he stammered.
"That's fine; I'll wait for you," Lana replied before turning her horse back towards the Cattle Shed. Ivan stood there watching her retreating figure—her alluring silhouette made him swallow hard after over a year without any intimate contact with women. He glanced at his somewhat old watch and decided to call the village chief.
"Village chief," came the gruff voice on the other end.
"What is it? Speak quickly; I'm busy," came the impatient reply.
Ivan hesitated, unsure how to start his request when suddenly the call was cut off. Xu Li lightly tapped her pink whip against her mare's flank and remarked, "This kid probably has some serious issues; he's more timid than a little girl."
Daria chuckled but remained silent.
