As Baba spoke, Xu Li held her and returned home. Ivan placed the gifts he had brought in the corner of the room, then sat down on the sofa, nodding as he accepted the watermelon that Anna had just cut. "Thank you, Auntie."
Haven't I told you? Take Lana and the kids out to have some fun; there are plenty of tasks for someone like you at the ranch.
He wiped Natasha's little mouth with a napkin while Ivan munched on watermelon. "That won't work; the village is busiest in this month and December. I plan to finish up this busy period and then take Lana to buy a car. During the New Year, I want to take Lana and the kids to visit Grandma in Tomsk Oblast."
It has been several years since we last visited. Grandma was very good to me back then. If possible, I'd like to bring her here to live with us. It would be nice to have her help look after Natasha and Katyusha, especially when Lana gets pregnant; having an elder around would be beneficial.
Watching Ivan speak animatedly, Xu Li smiled with satisfaction. "You’ve changed now that you have a family. But you shouldn’t say that in front of your mother; it might hurt her feelings."
"I know, Uncle."
Ivan took the cigarette offered by Xu Li and chatted with him for a while. Meanwhile, Lana stood by, smiling as she watched her husband converse with the village chief, occasionally feeding Katyusha watermelon. The little girl sucked eagerly at the juicy flesh until it was gone, then spat out the rind and continued to whine for more watermelon.
Before leaving, Lana pulled Xu Li over to the Apple Tree and bit her lip thoughtfully before asking, "Village Chief, my man... he’s gone, his body is no longer here."
Xu Li's words left Lana silent for a moment before she smiled as if feeling a sense of relief. She gently hugged the village chief and whispered in his ear, "Thank you; my children and I are finally free."
Rubbing Lana's head affectionately, he said, "Silly girl, I've told you that you will have a happy family. Your husband and children are waiting for you to come home for dinner. Now let’s go."
"Okay, Uncle. See you later."
Lana skipped out of the yard like a little girl, linking arms with her husband. She waved goodbye to the village chief before taking Natasha by the hand and heading toward their cozy little home, knowing she would no longer have to live in fear.
Natasha and Katyusha were also free from that disgraceful father. When they returned to buy a car, they would change their last names to their husband's; only then would they finally have a truly responsible dad!
Xu Li stood with his hands on his hips, smiling as he watched the family of four walk away. After a long moment, he shook his head and flicked away his cigarette butt before heading back inside. He had barely settled down when Anna came rushing out from the study, leaping into her husband's arms with excitement. Her long legs wrapped around his waist as she showered him with kisses on his ugly face.
"What's got you so happy?"
He supported his wife's backside playfully and pinched her cheek. "It's broad daylight!"
"I'm going to be a grandmother! Misha! I'm going to be a grandmother!"
"Oh my gosh! I'm going to be a grandmother!"
Anna was overjoyed as she hugged her husband and swayed happily. "Kamila is pregnant! Oleg just called me!"
"Really? Hahaha, that's wonderful!"
Xu Li carried his wife back into their bedroom. "When they come back to stay with us at the ranch, it will be so peaceful—perfect for nurturing a baby."
"Not yet; Kamila has gone back to her grandmother's house in Kazan and will be staying there for quite some time."
Anna nestled in her husband's embrace, her small mouth animatedly discussing the things they needed to prepare next. Just as she was getting into it, she suddenly began to gag for no apparent reason.
Xu Li's eyelids twitched uncontrollably. Could it really be this cliché?
