"Do you think I'm being too selfish?"
Sitting quietly on the living room sofa at night, I held Anna and Eva close, my large hand gently stroking their slightly rounded bellies. In truth, Daria and the others were still young; they should have a complete family, not live with me without any official recognition.
But it also depended on how they felt about it.
Anna's small hand rested on the back of my hand. "You’ve always been so kind, thinking of others wholeheartedly. Maybe you feel selfish, but to them, you are the best. After all, there were so many women who shared your bed."
Yet they could never endure the loneliness of the night, which led them to choose to give up and find a decent man to settle down with. Take Yisha for example; she was a model of a smart woman who always knew what she needed.
Unlike Daria and the others, who seemed a bit slow-witted—using today’s term, they were love-struck. As long as they were with you, they felt happy, but that was not something you could decide unilaterally.
Having lived together for these years, they might have thought about finding a decent man to rebuild their families. But now everyone in the village knew about our relationship; it was clearly impossible for them to break away and live independently. Outside the village, there was no other place that offered the same comfort as here, so they chose to continue enduring this hardship—it wasn’t hard to guess.
I thought it would be better to clarify things with them, ask about their true feelings, and then help them find solutions. That way, we wouldn’t have to suffer so much.
Eva’s words struck home. I rubbed my face and stood up to grab my coat and put on my boots at the entrance. "I’ll ask them for clarity; this can’t go on like this."
With several women following behind me without any formal recognition, I always felt guilty towards them and even more so towards my wife. What a mess I had made just for that moment of weakness!
"What do you think they would choose?"
Eva munched on grapes while looking at her sister beside her. Anna scratched her slightly rounded chin. "I can’t say for others, but Daria definitely won’t leave. She’s handling the ranch better than any of us; if someone walked into the office without knowing better, they’d think she was the boss. Plus, she practically wants to stick by Misha every moment—do you really think she would leave?"
"Let’s see what happens. If it comes down to just Daria remaining, then we’ll take care of her at home. Zhuo Ya and Irina also like to cling to her. This girl is an orphan by nature and not very bold; without someone to rely on, she could easily be bullied. It’s better for her to stay with us and help Zhuo Ya manage the ranch in the future."
Anna snuggled deeper into the sofa as Little White placed its paws on the couch and rested its big head on her lap, ears pressed against her belly listening quietly to the heartbeat of life within.
In the entertainment room, six of us sat in a circle around the fireplace. Xu Li took a drag from his cigarette and swept his gaze over their faces one by one. "Let’s hear your true thoughts; after all these years with me, you know what kind of person I am—speak up."
Anfisa glanced at Xu Li and then at the other four women before biting her lip. "I think about Mom and Sister-in-law; even though our family isn’t wealthy, Mom and Sister-in-law treat me really well. I basically give my entire salary to Sister-in-law."
