He opened his mouth wide, revealing a set of yellowed teeth, and followed Valery and the others out the door. Valery's eldest son waited for Tamishova to change her clothes and shoes before he opened the car door, allowing the woman who had suffered so much to get in.
"Come on, come on, have a drink! If you can hold your liquor, let's have another!"
Dinner stretched on until after nine o'clock, the table littered with empty bottles. While Valery and the two others were only slightly tipsy, Natasha's father was completely drunk, and they had to haul him into the trunk like a dead pig. They drove slowly back toward the village.
"You shouldn't have promised him anything," Tamishova whispered. "He's quite a rogue and will keep coming back for money. You won't be able to get rid of him."
"Well, he's dead now. Where would I find my son and daughter-in-law to ask for money?" Valery replied, lighting a cigarette and blowing out a smoke ring.
Tamishova looked shocked at Valery, then glanced at the two young men in the front seat. Her lips trembled slightly. "Killing someone is against the law. For this scoundrel, you shouldn't go that far. Just let it go."
"We didn't kill anyone, so don't accuse us."
Valery's eldest son carried the heavily intoxicated Peter to the roadside and even kindly adjusted his head so he could sleep more comfortably. Then he climbed into the car parked nearby, closed the door, and drove off.
In the snowy night, Peter lay in the snow, snoring heavily.
"Is this your girlfriend?" Larryf asked.
"She's really beautiful," he added with a laugh. "Looks like our village has gained a few more adults."
After entering the cafeteria with Natasha, Larryf was immediately surrounded by a swarm of aunts and relatives who eagerly scrutinized the shy young girl. Natasha was overwhelmed by their warm enthusiasm as they pulled her inside.
"Don't be shy! Try some of our local snacks. If Larryf dares to bully you, just come find your auntie; I'll help you deal with him."
Such a beautiful girl, marrying Larry is a pity; she would be much better off with my son.
Be careful, Natalia will come after you fiercely.
They surrounded Natasha, chatting enthusiastically about trivial matters. At the tables around her, Maria and Vika were also encircled by the neighbors from the Zhukov and Valentin families.
Hongqi Village is a whole, yet beneath this unity lie several small circles: Valery leads the descendants of the original villagers, Andreev heads the first wave of migrant villagers, Kolechkin represents the initial group of settlers, while the husbands of those female prisoners are staunch supporters of the village chief. Lastly, Alexei leads the most recent group of new villagers.
