Xiao Qi puffed out her chubby cheeks and shot Xu Lei a glare before marching off to the kitchen on her short legs. She grabbed a bottle of milk for herself and another for her brother. The two little chubby balls settled on the sofa, sipping their milk. Before long, sleepiness overtook them; hugging their empty milk bottles, they leaned back and dozed off on the couch.
"How old are you now? How could you break up with such a wonderful girl like Wang Xinlin?"
After carrying the two children back to their room and tucking them in with a light blanket, the Old Couple returned to the living room. Kong Yan Hong raised a finger, pointing at Xu Lei as she scolded him relentlessly. Just as Xu Lei was about to speak while lighting a cigarette, Xu Haigui slapped him on the back of the head: "Get out and smoke! Don’t you know secondhand smoke is bad for kids?"
Xu Lei opened the living room window and stood by it, quickly smoking his cigarette. "Didn’t the eldest just give you two grandsons? I never even thought about getting married."
"You little rabbit, are you trying to drive me crazy?"
Xu Haigui felt his blood pressure rising. He kicked off his slippers and threw one at Xu Lei: "Your brother is already holding his granddaughter, and where’s your damn wife? You won’t even take over the family business. Who's going to inherit what I’ve worked my whole life for?"
"Give it to Xiao Qi and Xiao Ba," Xu Lei shrugged indifferently. "Anyway, I plan to leave Pinnacle Entertainment to Xiao Si and Xiao Wu. I think I was quite reckless when I was younger; I said some harsh things that made the eldest go so far away. I’ve raised Xiao Si and Xiao Wu like they’re my own sons for all these years; it’s not bad to give it to them."
The living room fell silent all at once. After a long pause, Kong Yan Hong sighed and returned to the bedroom with a sense of melancholy. Xu Haigui rubbed his face, picked up a teacup and a cigarette, and went outside to smoke in the pavilion. Xu Lei shrugged, closed the window, and headed to the bathroom to shower and change.
He made a phone call to one of the newly launched girl group members at work before grabbing his car keys and heading out. He had come to see life quite clearly; people were creatures of interest, not everyone could be like his elder brother, who found a wife willing to follow him wholeheartedly.
Having grown accustomed to sycophancy since childhood, he knew that those women looked at him with various ulterior motives and desires. Bringing one home would only lead to trouble.
For money or fame, these women were desperate to have his child; some even went so far as to prepare punctured umbrellas or found ways during dangerous periods to avoid using protection—each thought made him feel sick.
He stopped by a convenience store on his way, bought two special packs along with some snacks to replenish his energy before heading off in his sports car to the hotel.
Just as Village Chief Grandpa and Grandma Eva arrived home with Xu Li and his wife, a swarm of kids burst in, eagerly looking up at the kind-hearted Village Chief Grandpa and Grandma. Xu Li chuckled as he playfully poked each Little Guy on their noses: "Wait for Grandpa to take you all watermelon picking."
"Okay!"
The Little Guys drew out their response in unison before obediently waiting in the living room. Anna and Eva brought them some snacks, earning bright smiles from each child.
"Slurp it down quickly! My dad says the village chief will be back in a few days."
"Yes, yes!"
"Valentina, save some strawberries! Don’t let the village chief come back without any!"
A half-grown boy squatted in the watermelon greenhouse and shouted towards an open vent. Immediately, several little girls from the nearby strawberry greenhouse responded cheerfully.
