In a slightly old yet exceptionally cozy bedroom, four-year-old Xu Li was happily turning the arms of his Leo Ultraman toy, singing "Only Mother is Good" with a cheerful little voice.
At the doorway stood a young couple. The man, about thirty, was tall at around six feet, dressed in a black suit. His mature and steady face reflected a deep sense of guilt and regret as he watched the boy play by himself. Beside him stood a woman in her late twenties, wearing a fitted light blue dress. Her long, wavy hair was dyed a trendy wine red, and her delicate features were enhanced with light makeup. She looked at the little boy playing with his toys and singing, her eyes filled with concern and a hint of excitement.
"Ali, this is your Aunt Li. From now on, let her be your mother, okay?" The man crouched down in front of the boy, taking the Leo Ultraman toy from his hands and pointing to the woman at the door. "Can you say hello to Aunt Li?"
The chubby little boy turned to look at the woman standing at the door. With a shy smile, he called out, "Hello, Auntie."
"Hello there, Ali!" The woman was delighted to see that the boy did not reject her. She quickly knelt down and hugged him tightly. "Auntie will take you to eat KFC, how does that sound?"
"Okay!"
Upon hearing about KFC, Little Guy nodded enthusiastically and allowed the woman to carry him out of the bedroom. The man watched them leave and let out a long sigh. When he looked up, he noticed a photo on the bedside table—one taken a year ago of his wife and child together.
His eyes suddenly felt moist as he rubbed his thumb over his wife's bright smile in the picture. "I will take good care of our child!"
After staring at the photo for a while, he finally composed himself and headed to the living room. He nodded at the woman holding Xu Li. "Let's go."
"Alright!"
The woman smiled gently at him as she carried Xu Li outside. The little boy wrapped his arms around her neck, resting his chin on her shoulder, lost in thought.
Dad said that Mom had gone far away and that he needed to learn to be strong. But why was he bringing home an aunt now and asking him to call her Mom?
His small mind couldn't grasp the reason behind it all, so he decided not to think too much about it. This aunt seemed really nice; she was going to buy him delicious hamburgers and fried chicken!
That day was the happiest Xu Li had been in three months since his mother passed away. Dad and Auntie took him to KFC, watched a movie, rode on a carousel, and even visited the zoo to see big tigers.
In a restaurant that evening, Dad and Auntie gently clapped their hands while singing him happy birthday songs. The cream cake tasted wonderful!
After a long day of fun, Xu Li returned home, took a bath by himself, and climbed into bed ready for sleep. In his dreams, he saw his mother standing under a big tree, smiling lovingly at him and nodding her head. Then she ignored his cries as she waved goodbye and gradually walked away into the distance.
"Mommy, mommy, waah waah waah, mommy!"
The little boy, unable to catch up with his mother in his dreams, finally woke up, sitting up in bed and quietly sobbing, tears streaming down from the corners of his eyes.
The bedroom was quiet and dark. After turning on the bedside lamp, the room filled with light, dispelling some of the fear that came from the darkness. He reached for the picture frame on the nightstand.
With his chubby little hands, he wiped at the frame, looking at his mother's kind face. His small lips pouted as he murmured, "Mommy, I miss you so much!"
In the photo, his mother’s beautiful smiling face seemed to be smiling back at him, encouraging him. He began to hum softly through his sniffles:
"Only mommy is good,
With a mom, a child is like a treasure.
In mommy's embrace,
Happiness is endless.
Only mommy is good,
With a mom, a child..."
In the dimly lit bedroom, the boy's singing echoed again and again before finally fading into silence, leaving only the sound of even breathing.
The next morning, after the man changed his clothes and finished breakfast, he pushed open the door to the child's bedroom. The boy was curled up in his blanket, fast asleep. He crouched by the bed intending to tuck him in properly.
However, his fingers brushed against something hard. Curious, he lifted the corner of the blanket and saw that the child was holding onto a picture frame of his wife tightly against his chest. At that moment, his heart felt like it was being squeezed tightly, aching painfully.
Carefully taking the frame out and placing it on the nightstand, he gently tapped the boy's small nose and tucked him back in before quietly leaving the room.
He glanced at the woman who was tidying up the dining table. "Yan Hong, I have to be away for half a month this time. Keep an eye on Ali; he might have nightmares at night."
"Don't worry; Ali will be my child too. I will take good care of him," she replied.
Li Yanhong stepped forward to help him straighten his collar and sent him downstairs to catch a cab. After humming a cheerful tune on his way home and closing the door behind him, he cleaned up the dishes thoroughly.
He meticulously cleaned both the bedroom and living room before confirming there were no chores left. Finally, he sat down on the living room sofa and turned on the large television to watch "My Fair Princess."
"Auntie, I'm hungry!"
The little boy woke up wearing thin pajamas and stood at the corner of the living room, looking shyly at Li Yanhong who was engrossed in her show. She quickly got up and carried him back to his room to help him get dressed.
After carefully brushing his teeth and washing his face, applying fragrant cream on him, she brought him back to the living room to sit down. She went to the kitchen to heat up some milk and meat buns she had bought earlier that morning before bringing them over to Little Guy.
She patted his head gently. "Eat up."
The Little Guy had a big appetite. At four years old, he devoured one and a half meat buns and a large cup of milk. After wiping his little mouth with a napkin, he sat next to Li Yanhong, watching television together.
"Zi Wei, listen to me," he said.
"I won't listen! I won't listen! I won't listen!"
On the screen, two attractive adults were arguing. The Little Guy looked at Li Yanhong in confusion and asked, "Auntie, why is that lady acting like that? The uncle didn't even get a chance to explain."
Li Yanhong chuckled and pinched his chubby cheek. "Because that's how women get when they're angry."
"My mom wouldn't act like that! My mom is great!"
