By the time the two of them arrived at the villa area in the northern suburbs of the city, it was already past five in the afternoon. Throughout the drive, Chang Qing had been recklessly speeding, and now the front of the car was splattered with a dark brown liquid, with even the windshield covered in spots. He didn’t dare to use the wipers, fearing it would only smear everything further.
The villa area consisted of individual houses, and although some families had turned into Zombies, it wasn’t easy to leave the villas, making it relatively safe overall.
Chang Qing drove straight to his home. Before he could knock on the door, it swung open. He felt a sudden tightness in his body as he was enveloped in a hug.
“Mom, my classmate is still behind us. I’m fine, really,” he said, feeling a bit overwhelmed by her enthusiasm. He reached out to pat Yang Mother’s back, trying to soften his voice.
“It’s good that you’re back, just good that you’re back,” Yang Mother said, her voice choked with emotion.
Through the doorway, Chang Qing saw his father sitting on the sofa, surrounded by several packed boxes. It seemed that Yang Father and Yang Mother had already been planning to search for their son. The timing of their arrival couldn’t have been better!
After a long embrace, Yang Mother finally let go and led both of them inside with red-rimmed eyes.
“Mom and Dad, this is my roommate Li Jun.”
“Hello, Uncle and Auntie.”
Yang Father and Yang Mother never interfered with their son’s friendships; they had welcomed all sorts of friends into their home before, so they accepted Li Jun without hesitation.
The Yang family rarely cooked at home; Yang Father and Yang Mother usually ate at work. When Yang Changqing was younger and lived at home, they had hired a chef to cook for them. But as he grew older and stayed in school dormitories, he had continued eating at school and ordering from nearby restaurants on weekends. Thus, there was no chef at home anymore.
For dinner, they each had a large bowl of noodles prepared by one of them, with Yang Mother adding two eggs for each person. Though simple, everyone ate heartily, with Chang Qing and Li Jun even finishing every drop of broth.
There was no choice; in the dormitory, it was all instant noodles, snacks, and cookies to get by. A bowl of egg noodles was the most delicious food he had eaten in days.
After finishing the noodles, Chang Qing realized that there wasn't much food at home either, mainly just rice, flour, and oil. Vegetables and meat were severely lacking. It made sense; in a highly developed modern society, who would stockpile large amounts of food at home? When the apocalypse suddenly struck and the supply chain was cut off, perishable items like vegetables and meat would quickly spoil and become inedible.
But regardless of the supplies, he couldn't stay at home any longer. So he voiced his plan to head north to the Official Base.
To his surprise, both Yang Father and Yang Mother were very supportive.
"Are you really just going to give up your family's business in Nancheng so easily and go to a strange place?" Li Jun asked curiously.
Yang Father waved his hand dismissively. "Money is just worthless paper now; what is a family business compared to life?"
"Old Yang is right. In the future, the base might be the main place for human survival. Getting there early might give us a chance to build a new family business," Yang Mother chimed in in agreement.
Chang Qing couldn't help but give his parents a thumbs-up. At the same time, he couldn't help but curse Original Body for being foolish and not appreciating such good parents. Yang Father and Yang Mother had built their lives from scratch; they had vision and capability. If they made it to the human base smoothly, they might really be able to create a new legacy.
"Mom and Dad, I support your entrepreneurial spirit. I still want to continue being a rice bug," Chang Qing said with a smile.
"You should be more serious; you're engaged now," Yang Mother said, noticing his carefree demeanor as she playfully tapped his back a few times.
Since Xu Caiwei was mentioned, Chang Qing felt it necessary to clarify everything at once. "Mom, Xu Caiwei doesn't even look at me; let's forget about this marriage." He was straightforward.
"What happened? She didn't oppose your engagement; did you do something?" Yang Father and Yang Mother's first reaction was disbelief, followed by suspicion that their reckless son had done something wrong to her.
For over a year, the original owner had tried various ways to please Xu Caiwei, but out of a man's pride, he never told his parents. Chang Qing, however, had no intention of keeping it a secret. He immediately revealed everything the original owner had done—sending breakfast, inviting a young heartthrob to dinner, and all the grand gestures of confession.
"Li Jun can testify; everything I'm saying is true. Xu Caiwei even gave my gifts to her roommate. It's not that she looks down on us," he said, a mix of sadness and anger on his face.
What could Li Jun do? Naturally, he nodded in agreement, affirming that Chang Qing was speaking the truth.
A child is always the best in their parent's eyes. Seeing Chang Qing's expression, Yang Mother felt heartbroken. "It was the Xu Family who wanted this union in the first place, and now they’re showing such an attitude. I want to know what the Xu Family is thinking," she said to Yang Father.
Then she comforted Chang Qing: "Don’t be sad, son. You’re still young, talented, and handsome. You will definitely meet someone better."
Yang Father remained silent, pondering deeper issues. With the apocalypse upon them, all assets had been wiped clean; everyone was back at the same starting line. The Yang Family had no real advantage over the Xu Family anymore. Their son didn’t have a good reputation outside; it was normal for others to look down on him. However, seeing his wife so furious, he took out his phone and tried calling Father Xu several times, only to find that the calls wouldn't go through.
