"Think it over carefully," he said to Sheng Li before turning and running towards the gas station. It was certainly not the Ordinary Zombie that caught Li Jun's attention.
When Chang Qing arrived at the scene, he saw several gas pumps toppled over, and a giant Zombie nearly three meters tall surrounded by several people. On the ground lay a man in a pool of blood, unconscious and possibly dead.
Wasn't that the Bearded Man from the neighboring team? What terrible luck he had. Unbeknownst to Chang Qing, the giant Zombie had discovered a large group of people gathered in one room next door. When it burst through the door, everyone scattered in panic. The Bearded Man, dazed from an injury and fever, thought someone was causing trouble and was about to teach them a lesson when he was caught by the Zombie, which promptly snapped his neck.
At that moment, four Ability users were attacking the Zombie: Yellow-Haired Boy, Dirty Braid Girl, Female Officer, and an elderly man who resembled a butler.
Seeing that Li Jun was keeping Yang Father and Yang Mother at a safe distance from the battlefield, Chang Qing felt reassured and began to observe the fight closely.
Yellow-Haired Boy was clearly a Gold-type Ability user; his skin had turned the same golden color as his hair as he engaged in close combat with the giant Zombie. Dirty Braid Girl surprisingly had the ability to turn her hair into whips, currently wielding dozens of long braids to strike from above and below. The Female Officer was still using firearms but moved with incredible speed, constantly changing angles to shoot as if trying to find the giant Zombie's weak point. Meanwhile, the Butler-like Elder had transformed his arms into sharp blades and fought alongside Yellow-Haired Boy in melee combat.
Chang Qing noticed that their teamwork was quite coordinated; it seemed they had fought together before.
Bai Bing stood nearby, looking somewhat serious. When he saw Chang Qing approach, he managed to force a smile.
Since Chang Qing was there, he had no intention of standing idle. With a thought, thorny vines burst forth from the ground and quickly wrapped around the giant's legs, bringing it crashing down.
"Roar!" The giant let out a piercing scream as it struggled to rise, but the vines quickly extended, binding its arms and body tightly.
A cloud of white mist emerged; it turned out that the thorns had pierced the giant's skin, causing dark brown blood to ooze out and corrode both the ground and the vines. Everyone was taken aback—despite many people attacking earlier without causing any bleeding, this thorny attack seemed sharper than knives or guns. Even Bai Bing standing guard couldn't help but touch his neck nervously.
"Attack its eyes," Bai Bing's voice rang out.
The Butler-like Elder leaned in, his arms transforming into two steel blades that plunged directly into the giant's eyes. With a roar, the Giant Zombie finally fell lifeless.
The Butler-like Elder separated the giant's head and extracted a walnut-sized sphere with his knife, then cleaned it with a handkerchief before handing it to Bai Bing.
Bai Bing took it but immediately tossed it to Chang Qing. "This is what you deserve."
Chang Qing had heard on the radio a few days ago that Advanced Zombies could produce Crystal Cores, which could be used to cultivate Abilities, so he naturally did not refuse. As soon as he held the Crystal Core, he felt a surge of energy emanating from it, resonating with the Ability energy within him. This was quite similar to the Crystal Cores from the beasts in the Cultivation World.
"Thank you." He casually placed the Crystal Core into his pocket.
Just as he was about to leave, Bai Bing called out to him.
"You’re heading to the northern base, right? How about we team up for the journey?"
Chang Qing paused, looking at Bai Bing. She casually tossed her hair back. "We have six Ability users with decent combat strength; you saw that just now." After a brief pause, she added, "With the recent mutations in Zombies, the road ahead will be even tougher. We might even encounter mutated Zombies leading hordes of regular Zombies..."
"We can set off together, but we’ll still operate as two separate teams," Chang Qing replied after some thought.
He had no objection to traveling with them; in fact, he was curious about how the male lead, Chen Jin, would make his entrance this time. However, he wouldn’t play caretaker for anyone, so they would need to manage their supplies independently.
Bai Bing was perceptive and understood from his words that he didn’t want to share resources but was willing to cooperate against enemies. As long as they could face threats together, that was enough for her; she valued their strong Abilities.
Thus, the next day, the two teams set off together.
In the morning, Sheng Li came over and said that everyone was reluctant to leave, so they decided to stay in their hometown. Chang Qing didn't say much; everyone had their own choices, and the journey to the base was fraught with danger as well.
...
“ brother Qing, catch!” Li Jun threw a blue-glowing Crystal Core towards Chang Qing, who was sitting on the roof of the car, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
At that moment, they were more than thirty kilometers away from Ji City. They had hoped to pass through in one go but unexpectedly encountered an ambush here.
Indeed, Level Three Zombies had already developed basic intelligence. Although they couldn't employ very complex tactics yet, ambush support was becoming a reality, making the combat scenarios much more complicated.
Li Jun shook his head as he looked at a Zombie impaled by dozens of sharp wooden stakes just a few meters ahead. Of all the targets to attack, why did it have to be the uncle and aunt in the car? They hadn’t even had time to escape before being caught in such a dire situation.
With a wave of his hand, Li Jun set the Zombie's head ablaze, and it quickly turned to ash. He picked up the Crystal Core from among the remains and put it in his pocket before continuing to incinerate another head.
Chang Qing observed the ground littered with Zombies and the figures busy collecting Crystal Cores, subtly furrowing his brow.
The authorities had confirmed that Crystal Cores could be used to enhance the levels of Ability Users. The higher the level of the Zombie, the higher the grade of its Crystal Core, which could significantly aid Ability Users in improving their abilities. Consequently, Crystal Cores became a form of hard currency among Ability Users; they could be used for trading supplies, purchasing services, and even became a major cause of conflict among them, much like oil.
This situation made things more convenient for Chang Qing's team; they even saved time looking for food since they could exchange Crystal Cores for provisions. The two teams adopted a straightforward method for distributing Crystal Cores: whoever killed a Zombie would claim the Crystal Core from its brain.
Throughout their journey, Chang Qing typically dealt with Advanced Zombies that were difficult for others to handle. The Crystal Cores from Advanced Zombies were equivalent to hundreds of low-level Zombie Crystal Cores, allowing for far greater exchanges than those from lower-level Zombies.
