However, before they could drive out of the hotel parking lot, they were stopped by a group of people.
The hotel’s Fat Manager wore a broad smile. “Dear guests, are you in such a hurry to leave? Has the hotel not treated you well?” Without waiting for a response, he turned to scold several hotel staff behind him. “It is our honor to have guests at our hotel. How are you serving them? You will be fined half your wages!” The staff members turned pale and rushed forward to apologize.
“What is going on here?” Bai Bing stepped forward, her voice stern and laced with coldness, causing several staff members to retreat. “We booked our rooms for these days when we checked in. We are simply departing as planned, which has nothing to do with the hotel’s service.” She succinctly explained the situation.
Seeing the hotel manager at a loss for words, a young man stepped forward. “I am Fu Chen from the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps.” He continued, “You must have received the invitation for tonight’s banquet this morning. Mr. Yang and Miss Bai are both among the top three seats. If you two do not attend, how can the banquet be held?”
His words made sense, and Bai Bing fell silent. After all, both of them had won valuable prizes through the Arena Competition; leaving now would seem like undermining the event.
“Why don’t you all stay for one more night? We will cover all hotel expenses,” the young man proposed.
It seemed that not attending the banquet was not an option anymore, so Chang Qing agreed. Since they weren’t allowed to leave, he was curious to see what the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps was really up to. Additionally, he sensed a familiar energy fluctuation from this young man—one that seemed to originate from the same source as the medicines he had purchased at the trading post, piquing his interest.
...
At the banquet, Chang Qing learned that Fu Chen was actually the second-in-command of the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps, while Hu Yan Zan, whom he had defeated in the Arena Competition, was third-in-command.
The food at the banquet was exceedingly lavish, rivaling that of high-society feasts before the apocalypse. They even introduced new dishes made from Crystal Cores. With delicious food and fine wine, everyone enjoyed themselves heartily.
After several rounds of drinks, Long Baiye, the leader of the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps, took to the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps has transformed this place into a sanctuary amidst the apocalypse; our strength is beyond doubt.” Everyone paused their drinking and turned their attention to him. They were not fools; most had anticipated that the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps had gone to great lengths to host this event in order to recruit talent. Now that he was addressing serious matters, there was a collective sense of “finally” among them.
"We not only have powerful Ability users, but we also have our own research team. This not only enhances our survival capabilities in this post-apocalyptic world but also significantly improves our quality of life." He gestured towards the various dishes on the banquet hall table. "Many of these new dishes have been specially developed for Ability users. They are not only delicious but also greatly beneficial for enhancing one's abilities."
He then pointed to a young man beside him. "Our second-in-command, Fu Chen, is a rare Healing Type Ability user. Even if he gets bitten by a Zombie, as long as he receives timely treatment, he can avoid mutation."
At this statement, the audience erupted in astonishment. An Ability user who could resist Zombie bites? Did that mean that as long as the injury wasn't fatal, there was a chance of survival? This was undoubtedly a tremendous temptation. Many instances of human casualties in battles against Zombies were not immediately lethal; often, it was just a scratch or a bite that ultimately led to an incurable fate, leaving one to helplessly watch as they transformed into a Zombie.
"Do mercenary group Ability users receive treatment services?" someone raised their hand and asked. This was a concern for everyone; even before the apocalypse, during major pandemics, medical resources were scarce. With only one Healing Type Ability user now, how could the needs of the entire team be met?
"Of course, but it requires a corresponding amount of Crystal Cores. Additionally, we have developed medications using Healing Type abilities that can resist the Zombie virus, which are very effective for treating Zombie bites and scratches."
As soon as he finished speaking, a group of hostesses entered, placing an exquisite small box in front of each guest. Inside was the medication he had mentioned.
Chang Qing opened his box and found it identical to the pills purchased from the trading post. Other guests also opened their boxes to take a look. As Ability users themselves, they could sense the unique aura emanating from the pills, causing many to breathe more rapidly. Pills that could treat Zombie bites—wasn't this equivalent to gaining another life?
Seeing everyone nodding in agreement, Long Baiye continued, "Therefore, I sincerely invite you all to join us..."
Everyone had been seeking a safe place while heading north, and after hearing Long Baiye's passionate introduction about the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps, they couldn't help but feel tempted.
At that moment, another group of hostesses entered with trays and placed a specially made tag in front of each guest.
What was this? The crowd examined it repeatedly but couldn't discern anything unusual and thus looked back at the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is our mercenary group's Identity Tag. Simply drop your blood on it to signify your joining of the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps." Long Baiye's voice sounded as if he were discussing something entirely ordinary, while Fu Chen and Hu Yan Zan beside him displayed similar tags for everyone to see.
Is it really that amazing? Although everyone found it somewhat unbelievable, the emergence of abilities in this post-apocalyptic world made the appearance of other miraculous items seem understandable.
Chang Qing toyed with the Identity Tag in his hand. The tag, made from an unknown material, was a pale white color. Despite being thin, it felt surprisingly heavy. He spread out his Divine Sense and sensed a trace of ominous energy emanating from the tag.
"Host! Stop immediately," the system's voice was sharp. "Your current body cannot withstand the power of your soul."
"I know," Chang Qing quickly withdrew his hand. This body had been enhanced by an ability, making it significantly stronger than an ordinary person's, which was why he dared to use a bit of his original soul's power.
Looking around, he noticed some people had already pricked their fingers and were letting their blood flow onto the Identity Tag. The moment the blood touched the tag, it was absorbed completely without a sound, as if a drop of water had seamlessly merged into the ocean.
