The next morning, I headed to the Construction Bureau as usual.
Upon reaching the door of the Duty Room, I found two guards stationed there.
“Lord Lu, you are not permitted to enter,” one of the guards blocked my way.
A cold smile crept across my mind; it seemed they were finally ready to take action.
I didn’t argue, merely standing quietly to the side, waiting.
Before long, Liu Jun sauntered over, his hips swaying with an air of arrogance on his face.
“Oh, isn’t this Lord Lu? What are you doing standing here? Have you forgotten that you’re off duty today?”
I looked at him with icy eyes.
Liu Jun waved a document in front of me.
“Lord Lu, take a look at this! It’s a Dismissal Document! You’ve been dismissed!”
He tossed the document at my feet, his tone dripping with disdain.
“Lu Shanyun, your father is in no position to help himself now, and you’ve lost your support. If you know what’s good for you, get out of the capital quickly to avoid greater suffering later.”
I bent down to pick up the document and unfolded it. Indeed, it was a dismissal notice.
A cold smile formed in my heart; this tactic was truly pathetic.
I threw the document back at Liu Jun's feet, my tone calm.
"Dismiss me? You think it will be that easy?"
Liu Jun was momentarily stunned, clearly not expecting my reaction.
He shouted sharply, "Lu Shanyun, are you out of your mind? Do you really think you can turn this around?"
I looked at him coldly. "Liu Jun, do you really think this will bring me down? You're being naive."
I turned to leave, but Liu Jun grabbed my sleeve.
"Lu Shanyun, stop! Where do you think you're going?"
I shook off his hand. "I'm going to Duzhiyuan."
Liu Jun burst into laughter as if he had heard a great joke.
"Duzhiyuan? Who are you going to report? Me? Lord Yang? What evidence do you have?"
I stared at him, my gaze sharp. "Evidence? I have plenty."
I pulled a small booklet from my sleeve and waved it in front of Liu Jun.
"This contains records of everything you've done these past few days, including how you framed my father and engaged in bribery and corruption."
Liu Jun's face instantly turned pale.
He reached out to snatch the booklet from my hand, but I dodged away.
"Lu Shanyun, how dare you!"
I let out a cold laugh. "What do I have to be afraid of? If you dare to act, I dare to report."
I tucked the booklet away and left the Construction Bureau without looking back.
Liu Jun stood frozen in place, his face pale and his body trembling.
I arrived at the Duzhiyuan and presented the evidence I held.
The officials at Duzhiyuan examined the evidence carefully, their expressions serious.
"Lord Lu, this matter is of great importance; we will need time to investigate."
I nodded. "I understand, and I believe the law will give me justice."
Duzhiyuan accepted my complaint, and I felt a slight sense of relief.
What followed was a long wait.
During this time, I faced various difficulties and obstacles from the Construction Bureau.
They tried every means to make me give up, but I did not back down.
I knew this was going to be a tough battle, but I would never give up.
"Do you think this will make me yield? Let me tell you, I will never compromise with you!" I said to Yang Jianyong and Liu Jun, who had come to threaten me.
I stared directly into their eyes, my gaze unwavering.
I arrived at Duzhiyuan and presented the evidence in my hand.
The officials at Duzhiyuan examined the evidence carefully, their expressions serious.
"Lord Lu, this matter is of great importance; we need time to investigate."
I nodded, "I understand. I believe the law will give me justice."
After leaving Duzhiyuan, I did not head straight home but instead went to the largest teahouse in the imperial city—Pavilion of Listening to the Rain.
I was waiting for someone.
Someone who could help me.
Sure enough, not long after, a man dressed in brocade and wearing a jade crown walked in.
He approached me directly and cupped his hands in greeting, "Young Master Lu, it’s good to see you well."
The visitor was none other than the favored official at the current emperor's court, the representative of the Imperial Merchant—Eunuch Li.
"Eunuch Li," I said as I rose to return the greeting.
"Young Master Lu, you asked me to come here today. Is there something you wish to discuss?" Eunuch Li asked directly.
I nodded. "I was dismissed from the Ministry of Works today. I believe you are already aware of this matter."
Eunuch Li smiled. "Young Master Lu is joking. How could such matters in the capital escape my notice?"
I took out another piece of evidence from my sleeve and handed it to Eunuch Li. "This is evidence of corruption and bribery involving Chief Inspector Yang Jianyong and Liu Jun from the Construction Bureau."
Eunuch Li accepted the evidence and examined it carefully, his expression gradually darkening.
"Rest assured, Young Master Lu, I will report this matter to His Majesty and ensure that justice is served for you."
I thanked Eunuch Li, feeling a great weight lift from my heart.
I knew that with Eunuch Li's help, my chance for a comeback had arrived.
The next morning, I returned to the Construction Bureau site once more.
This time, I did not wear my official robe but instead donned a set of luxurious brocade garments.
Outside the Duty Room, Chief Inspector Yang Jianyong and Liu Jun were already waiting, wearing mocking smiles on their faces.
"Oh, isn't this Lord Lu? Why are you dressed so flamboyantly today? Have you decided to become an actor?" Yang Jianyong said sarcastically.
Liu Jun covered his mouth and chuckled. "Lord Yang is joking. Lord Lu is now the representative of the Imperial Merchant; with such a prestigious identity, he naturally needs to dress appropriately."
I looked at them with a cold smile in my heart; the real show was just beginning.
I walked straight toward the construction site gate, and two guards immediately stepped forward to block my way.
"Stop! Who goes there?"
I took out the token that symbolized my identity as an Imperial Merchant and waved it in front of them. "Open your eyes and see clearly. I am the representative of the Great Jin Imperial Merchant, here on official business to inspect the progress of the project."
The two guards were taken aback, quickly bowing in respect. "We did not recognize your esteemed presence. Please forgive us, my lord."
I snorted coldly and stepped into the construction site.
Yang Jianyong and Liu Jun's expressions changed dramatically as they hurried after me.
"Lu Shanyun, what... what do you mean by this?" Yang Jianyong stammered, pointing at me.
I paused and turned to face them. "What do you mean? Lord Yang, Miss Liu, haven’t you both wanted me to leave the Construction Bureau for good? Now that I’ve returned as a representative of the Imperial Merchant, aren’t you pleased?"
Yang Jianyong and Liu Jun's faces grew even darker; they never expected me to return in this manner.
A slight smile crept onto my lips. "It’s been a while, both of you."
