The operating room lights were still on, and I stared intently at the door, feeling a chill run through my body as my stomach twisted in knots.
Zhang Yichen was still saying something, but I couldn't absorb a single word; his voice sounded distant and unclear.
" Wanqing, it's too stuffy here. Why don't you step outside for some fresh air?" Zhang Yichen suggested.
"No, I'll wait right here," I replied, my voice dry but firm. He nodded and didn't press further.
Footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor, and I instinctively looked up, but saw no one approaching. Zhang Yichen had vanished. I pressed my fingers to my temples, trying to calm myself down.
Suddenly, I heard faint voices from the adjacent room—those voices… they sounded so familiar. Driven by curiosity, I stumbled over to the slightly ajar door.
"You think Su Wanqing is making a face like a lost dog right now?" It was Wang Manni's voice.
I held my breath, my heart racing wildly.
"Ha, she probably wishes she could die in that little brat's place," Zhang Yichen's voice dripped with disdainful amusement. "But this is just the beginning; the real show is yet to come."
My blood ran cold as a wave of dread washed over me from head to toe. I pressed myself against the wall, my ears buzzing, unable to believe what I was hearing.
"That little brat fell so hard; even if he doesn't die, he'll be a fool," Wang Manni's voice carried a hint of malice. "Su Wanqing is such a stupid woman; she actually believed you would treat her well and even agreed to the IVF."
"Tsk, she doesn't think about how she could possibly make a comeback. Wasn't it you who helped her up in the first place? Without you, what does she have left? Just a burden of a son?"
"Don't worry; I've arranged everything perfectly this time. No one will trace it back to us," Zhang Yichen's voice was low and chilling. "Once Su Wanqing completely collapses, that fool Li Zekai will go down with her. By then, you'll be the new rising star."
Wang Manni scoffed derisively: "If it weren't for me using some tricks to get Li Zekai to divorce her and hype up Su Wanqing's reputation, how would she have gotten so much attention?"
Zhang Yichen's laughter pierced through my eardrums: "That little brat's fall is just what we need to elevate the heat even further while conveniently promoting Su Wanqing's maternal image. Don't rush it, Manni; Su Wanqing's success will soon become my success, and you'll profit even more from it—what's not to like?"
I trembled all over as if I were trapped in an ice cellar. Xiao Xing’s injury wasn’t an accident; it was all meticulously plotted by them!
Divorce, online harassment—this was all part of their carefully designed trap! How could they be so cruel? Xiao Xing was only five years old! He was so adorable and understanding; what had he done wrong?
I clamped my mouth shut to stifle any sound that might escape. Silent tears streamed down my face, leaving cold trails on my skin. Memories of moments spent with Xiao Xing flashed through my mind.
As he clung to my neck, playfully nuzzling against me, the softness of his touch lingered in my mind. When he waved his little hands, declaring that he would protect me, the seriousness in his expression was heartwarming.
I had once trusted Zhang Yichen so deeply, viewing him as my salvation and my support. I even made the decision to have a child through in vitro fertilization for him. How foolish! I was naïve enough to believe that he would provide a complete home for me and Xiao Xing.
His so-called salvation was nothing more than poison wrapped in sugar, slowly eroding my life and destroying my happiness!
I felt hatred! I hated Zhang Yichen's hypocrisy and cruelty; I despised Wang Manni's malice and cunning; but most of all, I loathed my own stupidity and innocence!
Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm my racing heart. I couldn’t fall apart; I still had Xiao Xing. I had to seek justice for him!
I quietly left the hospital room and returned to the door of the operating theater. After a while, Zhang Yichen came back, a façade of concern plastered on his face. “ Wanqing, are you alright? Xiao Xing is still in surgery; don’t worry too much,” he said.
I glared at him coldly, my eyes filled with disgust and hatred. He reached out to grab my shoulder, but I forcefully shrugged him off and stepped back. “Don’t touch me!”
Zhang Yichen was taken aback, the concern on his face vanishing instantly, replaced by a hint of panic and unease.
