Nan Gong Xuan collapsed to the ground, convulsing a few times before falling still.
Lin Yuan wiped the sweat from his forehead and let out a long sigh. "Finally dealt with this trouble. Phew, this woman was tougher than I imagined; I almost capsized in the gutter." He shook his hands, feeling as if his bones were about to fall apart.
The aftermath of the battle still lingered, with the air thick with the smell of charred flesh and blood, stimulating everyone's nerves. Members of the Squad gathered around, their faces filled with relief from surviving the ordeal, and of course, there was no shortage of admiration for Lin Yuan.
"Captain, are you alright? That move 'Great Cosmos Shift' was so cool! It was simply awe-inspiring!" Li Ming asked excitedly, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm, eager to learn from him on the spot.
Lin Yuan waved his hand dismissively. "Just a small scene, just a small scene. Basic skills, nothing to fuss over." He forced a relaxed smile and playfully winked, but inside he felt utterly exhausted. This battle had been tougher than he had anticipated; if it hadn't been for his quick thinking at a critical moment and unleashing his trump card 'Great Cosmos Shift'—a long-lost supreme skill he had learned from an ancient book—he might not have made it out alive. This move had turned the tide, reflecting Nan Gong Xuan's attack back at her, leading to their narrow victory.
"Captain, what should we do next?" Zhang Qiang asked, adjusting his glasses, which reflected a glint of light as he calculated their next steps.
Lin Yuan surveyed the surroundings, his gaze landing on the entrance to the Experimental Core Area. The large door emanated a cold metallic luster, resembling a sleeping giant quietly waiting for its prey. "The defense system of the Core Area has been compromised by Nan Gong Xuan; now is the best time to infiltrate. However..." He paused, his expression turning serious as he stroked his chin, contemplating a significant dilemma. "The situation inside the Core Area is unclear; rushing in could lead to an ambush. If there are Laser Cannons or robots hidden inside, things could get troublesome. For safety's sake, I’ve decided to scout it alone."
"What? Alone? That’s not acceptable! Captain, you’re just asking for trouble!" Su Jiu'er was the first to object, her eyes wide with concern and her tone urgent. "It's too dangerous! We don’t know what monsters might be lurking in the Core Area; how can you handle it alone? What if you get captured? What will we do then?"
"Yeah, Captain! We should go with you! There's strength in numbers; even if there are Mechanism Traps inside, we can watch each other's backs," Li Ming chimed in, thumping his chest with determination.
Lin Yuan shook his head. "No way; too many people make for a bigger target and increase the chances of exposure. I can move more flexibly on my own and escape more easily if needed. You all stay here on standby and be ready to support me at any moment. Don’t worry; I’m quite skilled; traps are no problem for me." He smiled confidently and made a silly face to lighten the mood.
"But..." Su Jiu'er wanted to say more but was interrupted by Lin Yuan.
"Trust me; I’ll be fine. I’m like an indestructible cockroach—the reincarnation of Cockroach Hero!" Lin Yuan said firmly. "I’ll be back soon; just wait for me. When I return, I’ll treat you all to a feast!"
Taking a deep breath, he turned and walked toward the entrance of the Experimental Core Area.
"Wait!" Su Jiu'er called out to him.
Lin Yuan stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her, a hint of confusion in his eyes.
Su Jiu'er hurriedly walked up to him, taking a jade pendant from around her neck. The pendant was translucent and emitted a faint warm glow, clearly not an ordinary item. She handed the pendant to Lin Yuan. "Take this; it can help you withstand a fatal attack. It’s a family heirloom of mine, and it can save your life in critical moments."
Lin Yuan accepted the pendant, feeling its warmth in his hand. A faint aura emanated from it, bringing him a sense of reassurance. "Thank you." He tucked the pendant close to him and smiled at Su Jiu'er, his gaze filled with tenderness. "When I return, let’s go watch a movie together."
He turned again and resolutely walked through the door of the Experimental Core Area.
The door slowly closed, swallowing Lin Yuan's figure into the darkness. Su Jiu'er stared at the tightly shut door, her heart filled with worry and unease. She clenched her fists tightly, silently praying for Lin Yuan's safe return.
"Captain, you must come back safely..."
Lin Yuan walked alone down the dimly lit corridor, the sound of his footsteps echoing sharply in the silence. He carefully observed his surroundings, not daring to relax for even a moment. The walls on either side of the corridor flickered with various indicator lights, resembling eerie eyes watching his every move. The complex machinery hummed ominously, like a group of lurking beasts ready to devour him at any moment.
"This place is really creepy... I wonder if a zombie will suddenly jump out or something..." Lin Yuan muttered to himself, rubbing his arms as goosebumps prickled his skin.
He continued forward when suddenly, a beam of light appeared at the end of the corridor, like a lighthouse guiding him through the darkness.
Lin Yuan's heart leaped with joy as he quickened his pace. "Looks like the exit is just ahead!"
As he reached the light, he found himself in a vast laboratory filled with an array of advanced instruments and equipment that dazzled the eyes. In the center of the lab stood a massive Cultivation Chamber, where a figure lay quietly inside.
Lin Yuan recognized that person immediately—it was Zhao Yunyi, the one he had been searching for all along.
"Zhao Yunyi!" Lin Yuan rushed to the front of the Cultivation Chamber, carefully observing Zhao Yunyi inside.
Zhao Yunyi lay with her eyes tightly shut, her face pale and her body filled with various tubes, looking extremely weak, like a sleeping princess awaiting her prince's awakening.
"What happened to her? Could she have been subjected to some kind of experiment?" Lin Yuan was filled with confusion as he reached out to touch the Cultivation Chamber, hesitating for fear of triggering an alarm.
At that moment, a cold voice slithered from behind him, like a snake's hiss, sending chills down his spine.
"I didn't expect you to find your way here."
Lin Yuan spun around abruptly to see a man in a white lab coat standing behind him, a chilling smile on his face and mockery gleaming in his eyes, as if everything was under his control.
"Who are you?" Lin Yuan asked warily, sensing a powerful aura emanating from the man that made him uneasy.
"I am the one in charge here; you can call me Dr. X," the man replied, his voice deep and hoarse, as if it came from the depths of hell. "The fact that you managed to get here means your strength is greater than I imagined. However, you have ultimately fallen into my trap."
"You captured Zhao Yunyi; what do you want?" Lin Yuan demanded, clenching his fists and preparing for a fight.
Dr. X chuckled softly. "I haven't captured her; I'm merely helping her."
"Helping her? You’ve done this to her and call it help?" Lin Yuan shouted, feeling his anger boiling over.
"What do you know?" Dr. X scoffed. "I'm helping her evolve, turning her into a more powerful being. Who do you think you are to question me?"
"Evolve?" Lin Yuan furrowed his brow. "What exactly are you up to?"
"You'll find out soon enough," Dr. X said with a mysterious smile. "Now, I give you a choice: join us or die."
Lin Yuan sneered. "I choose to defeat you!"
He activated the Time Manipulator, and the surrounding time seemed to freeze, everything slowing down. Lin Yuan's figure flickered as he instantly appeared in front of Dr. X, delivering a powerful punch that howled through the air, carrying a tremendous force.
Dr. X was caught off guard and was struck squarely in the face by Lin Yuan's punch, sending him flying backward to crash heavily onto the ground with a muffled groan.
"Cough, cough..." Dr. X struggled to rise, his face filled with shock. "You can... manipulate time?"
Lin Yuan did not give him a chance to speak again; he charged forward once more, raining down punches and kicks like a torrential downpour. Each punch contained immense power, and every kick sliced through the air with fierce momentum.
Dr. X could hardly defend against Lin Yuan's onslaught, forced to endure the blows passively. His white lab coat was already stained red with blood, making him look utterly disheveled.
"Stop!"
At that moment, a clear voice rang out.
Lin Yuan halted his attack and turned to see Zhao Yunyi, who had somehow awakened and was standing beside the Cultivation Chamber, her eyes filled with terror.
"Yunyi, you're awake!" Lin Yuan exclaimed in surprise.
Zhao Yunyi shook her head urgently. "Lin Yuan, hurry and leave! This place is very dangerous!"
