The next morning, as soon as I stepped outside, I saw several villagers gathered together, their faces filled with terror.
I walked over to ask what was going on and learned that a few more children had been taken by the wolf pack last night.
My heart tightened, and I could no longer pretend everything was fine.
I gritted my teeth and approached the Village Chief.
"Village Chief, this time I truly want to help you. Those powders won't work; I need to think of another way."
The Village Chief looked at me, his eyes filled with anger.
"Tian Qi, what are you doing..."
I sighed, "Village Chief, I know you don't trust me.
But I'm also a man, and seeing these children taken by wolves weighs heavily on my heart.
This time, I'm all in.
Even if it costs me my life, I will help you drive the wolves away."
The Village Chief fell silent for a moment before sighing.
"Well, just tell me what you have in mind.
We might as well treat a dead horse as if it were alive.
Go ahead, what do we do?"
That night, I steeled myself and led a few villagers into the mountains to search for traces of the wolf pack.
I thought about finding an opportunity to slip away while they were distracted.
The wolves outside the village were not to be trifled with; if things went wrong, I might lose my own life in the process.
The wind and snow in the forest were so fierce that everything was shrouded in a blanket of white, making it hard to see the path ahead.
"You all go ahead; I need to take a leak, then I'll catch up with you," I said, tightening my tattered cotton jacket around me.
In my heart, I thought, farewell to you all; I can't let myself end up in this cursed place.
As I watched them walk away, just as I was about to run after them, I suddenly heard a child's cries for help.
I was startled, and my heart leapt into my throat.
For some reason, I felt compelled to run toward the sound. As I ran, I shouted, "Don't be afraid! I'm coming!"
When I arrived, I found a seven or eight-year-old child cornered by several wolves.
The child was trembling in fear, tears welling up in their eyes.
Seeing this situation made my heart sink.
"Damn it, weren't we supposed to run?"
How did I end up right in the jaws of the wolves?
I felt a wave of panic inside, but on the surface, I had to act tough.
After all, if I showed fear now, I'd really become a meal for these beasts.
I pulled out a length of iron chain from my pocket, swung it onto the ground, and shouted, "Get back, you beasts!"
The wolves were startled by my voice and took a few steps back.
I seized the opportunity to rush over, cradling the child in my arms as I ran back.
The wolf pack, seeing this, immediately gave chase.
As I ran, I turned around and shouted, “Beasts, if you have the guts, don’t chase me!”
If only those wolves could understand my words.
But there was no such luck; they were closing in fast.
With a whoosh, a stick flew past me and struck at the wolves.
It turned out to be the villagers who had come rushing to my aid.
Seeing more people around, the wolves quickly halted and turned back into the depths of the forest.
By the time we returned to the village, the child was already quite frightened.
The Village Chief saw us and hurried over, “Tian Qi, are you alright?”
I was shaken as well. Holding the child tightly, I gasped for breath and said, “Village Chief, that wolf pack is too fierce; I nearly lost my life today.”
The Village Chief called for someone to take the child from me and led me into a house, handing me a bowl of hot liquor.
“Drink this to calm your nerves. We owe it all to you today; otherwise, it would have been another life lost.”
I took a swig of the liquor, and gradually my body began to warm up.
This time, there was no way out; running was no longer an option.
After tonight, that pack of beasts would surely surround the village tightly.
If I don’t run, it would be strange if I didn’t end up in the belly of a wolf.
But if I don’t run, I have to find a way to deal with these beasts.
With that thought, I slammed the bowl down heavily on the edge of the kang:
“Village Chief, we can’t delay any longer.
We need to take action quickly; otherwise, the next one to be taken might just be your grandson.”
Hearing this, the Village Chief turned pale.
He sighed and said:
“Tian Qi, this time it all depends on you.”
A mix of emotions surged within me.
To be honest, I, Tian Qi, have deceived countless people in my life, but I never imagined that one day I would risk my life to save someone else.
Even if it’s just for my own life, I can’t back down anymore.
“Village Chief, don’t worry. This time I will drive the wolves away.
Even if it costs me my life, I will protect our village.”
