The base trembled precariously, with debris falling like rain.
Lin Yuan, along with Su Jiu'er and the others, sprinted desperately toward the exit, his mind racing with complaints: “Is this base made of tofu? Why is it falling apart while we're running? Nan Gong Xuan and her wasteful ways, what a disaster!” A massive concrete slab above them swayed dangerously, about to crash down. Lin Yuan shouted, “Oh my god, we’re going to be pancakes!” He grabbed Su Jiu'er and yanked her away just in time, as the slab smashed down heavily, sending dust flying everywhere.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Lin Yuan climbed up from the ground, covered in dirt, spitting out a mouthful of grit. With a grimace, he said, “This is what escaping feels like? It’s worse than getting caught in a rainstorm while delivering takeout!”
Su Jiu'er looked just as disheveled, her hair caked in dust. She shot him an annoyed glare. “This is all your fault! You had to play the hero! If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be in such a mess!”
Lin Yuan chuckled sheepishly and scratched his head. “It was an emergency! Besides, protecting beautiful women is my duty!” He dusted himself off dramatically, striking a heroic pose.
“Boom—”
Another loud crash echoed as the base collapsed completely, clouds of dust obscuring everything.
Lin Yuan and the others crawled out from the rubble, looking like they had just emerged from a coal mine.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Lin Yuan coughed while brushing off the dust and grumbled, “This is way too intense! It’s more thrilling than getting stuck in traffic while delivering takeout! If this were made into a movie, it would definitely be a box office hit!”
Su Jiu'er rolled her eyes at him. “You still have the nerve to joke around! If it weren’t for your bravado, we wouldn’t be in this predicament!” She checked on the other team members. “Is everyone okay?”
Zhou Haoran winced as he held his arm and grinned through the pain. “I’m fine; just a little scrape. No big deal!” He waved his arm lightly but winced again at the sharp pain.
Li Xiaomeng patted her chest, still shaken. “You scared me! I thought I was done for!”
“What time do you think it is? You’re still joking around!” Su Jiu'er shook her head helplessly and turned to Zhou Haoran. “Hao Ran, contact headquarters and report our situation.”
“Got it!” Zhou Haoran pulled out his phone but found there was no signal. “Oh no! The signal is jammed here!” he said anxiously.
“I’ll give it a try!” Lin Yuan took out his old phone and miraculously found it had full signal. “Ha! In critical moments, you can always count on my old phone! This treasure cost me fifty bucks!” He said proudly as he dialed headquarters.
Once connected, Lin Yuan succinctly reported their situation and asked about their next steps.
After hanging up, Lin Yuan turned to Su Jiu'er. “Headquarters said that the energy fluctuations in the passage have stabilized but need further observation. They want us to return to headquarters to discuss our strategy.”
Su Jiu'er nodded, "Alright, let's head back to headquarters first."
The group supported each other, stumbling as they made their way to the headquarters. Along the way, Lin Yuan couldn't help but showcase his sense of humor, telling jokes to lighten the mood and ease the tension.
Upon returning to the Qi Yun Investigation Bureau headquarters, an emergency meeting was immediately convened.
The atmosphere in the conference room was tense, with worry etched on everyone's faces.
Su Jiu'er provided a detailed report on the situation at the Experimental Base and used a projector to display photos and videos taken at the site. The images showed the mutated Experimental Animals in grotesque forms, terrifying and chilling; the video footage of the collapsing base was shocking and sent shivers down their spines.
"I believe that Nan Gong Xuan's experiments have seriously threatened global security, and we must stop her as soon as possible!" Su Jiu'er stated firmly.
The director pondered for a moment, lightly tapping his fingers on the table, his brow furrowed. "Jiu'er, I understand your concerns, but we currently lack sufficient evidence to prove Nan Gong Xuan's crimes. We cannot act rashly. We need concrete evidence to bring her to justice."
Su Jiu'er grew anxious. "Director, we can't wait any longer! If we let her continue, the consequences will be unimaginable! Those mutated monsters could cause a massive disaster if they enter society!"
Lin Yuan also stepped forward. "Director, I saw Nan Gong Xuan's experiments with my own eyes. Those mutated Experimental Animals are nothing short of monsters! They possess immense strength, incredible speed, and extreme aggression! If they get out into society, it will be catastrophic!" He vividly described what he had witnessed at the base, his tone exaggerated and his expressions animated as if reliving the experience.
The director looked at Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er, deep in thought for a long while before finally nodding. "Alright, I agree with you both; we must stop Nan Gong Xuan!"
"Great!" Su Jiu'er and Lin Yuan both sighed in relief.
The director continued, "However, we cannot confront Nan Gong Xuan directly; that would only alert her. We need to find her weaknesses and strike decisively!"
Lin Yuan stroked his chin thoughtfully and said, "Nan Gong Xuan's weakness should be her experimental data! If we can obtain her data, we can expose her crimes and ruin her reputation!"
Su Jiu'er’s eyes lit up. "Lin Yuan, you're right! We must get our hands on Nan Gong Xuan's experimental data!"
The director agreed. "Alright, that's settled! Jiu'er, you will be responsible for investigating Nan Gong Xuan's experimental data. Lin Yuan, you will ensure Jiu'er's safety."
"Understood!" Su Jiu'er and Lin Yuan replied in unison.
After the meeting adjourned, Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er immediately sprang into action.
Through investigation, Su Jiu'er discovered that Nan Gong Xuan's experimental data was stored on a highly confidential server. To obtain this data, they first needed to breach the server's firewall.
Breaking through the firewall required a top-notch hacker.
Lin Yuan thought of someone—his college classmate, known as the "King of Code," Li Ming.
Li Ming was a computer genius, proficient in various programming languages and network technologies. He had previously hacked into the United States Department of Defense's server, making him a true expert in hacking.
Lin Yuan immediately contacted Li Ming and explained the situation.
Without hesitation, Li Ming agreed to help.
With Li Ming's assistance, the progress in breaching the firewall accelerated rapidly.
Just then, the headquarters of the Qi Yun Investigation Bureau was suddenly attacked!
The assailant was none other than Nan Gong Xuan!
Upon learning that his experimental data had been stolen, Nan Gong Xuan was furious and personally led a team to reclaim the data.
