Lu Youyou stared blankly at the Gene Building, which had been devastated by an explosion. The towering structure, once a symbol of strength, was now shrouded in thick black smoke, obscuring everything above the third floor.
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of several girls from Xu Lie's class, their mouths agape, though their screams were lost amidst the chaos. Perhaps the echo of the explosion had dulled their hearing, or perhaps they were too frightened to make a sound.
After a moment, the sound of shattered glass falling to the ground snapped everyone back to reality. The staff and their homeroom teacher shouted frantically for everyone to run, prompting the group of girls to surge forward, unwilling to linger even for a second.
As they sprinted a few paces, a more powerful explosion roared behind them. This second blast was even more intense; those who turned back could see debris—chunks of wall laced with rebar—erupting from the building, trailing smoke as it crashed down below.
The already thick smoke now spread uncontrollably, enveloping the sky and filling the air with an ominous presence. The building continued to groan under the strain of its collapse. No one dared to look back; they cursed their parents for not giving them faster legs as they raced away from danger.
Fortunately, there were enough good people around that they didn’t end up in a stampede.
“Did it blow up? It really blew up! Male Second Lead is truly something else! He said he’d take revenge and just blew up the Gene Building!”
“No way! How could a pack of tissues cause such destruction?”
“Did you not see? The production team gave us a shot where Male Second Lead had a gun in his backpack; getting explosives shouldn’t be too hard for him.”
“Are you serious? It’s already outrageous for a high schooler to get a handgun; how could he possibly get explosives?”
Everyone ran until they were exhausted and breathless before finally stopping. Only Xu Lie remained calm and collected, even taking time to read through the comments on Danmaku.
Once they halted, faces were pale and trembling with fear. Lin Yuanliang gasped for air before rushing over to check on Meng Ling. The worry that had clouded Meng Ling’s face all day melted away into a beautiful smile.
At that moment, Lu Youyou was too preoccupied to care about her crush. Instead, she stealthily approached Xu Lie and whispered, “You… is it you?”
Though she had regained her breath somewhat, her questioning lacked any intimidation. Her uneven breathing only drew attention to her chest rising and falling rapidly.
The gentlemanly Xu Lie kept his gaze steady on her: “Why don’t you wipe off your sweat first?” He then pulled out a pack of tissues from his backpack.
Lu Youyou felt as if she were about to develop a psychological trauma from this interaction. She took two steps back, wishing she could swat the tissues out of his hand but fearing it would attract unwanted attention.
She took a couple of steps closer, lowering her voice to speak. "No, don't try to change the subject! That explosion—was it you? You murderer! Do you have any idea how many people could have died from such a blast? I will never keep this a secret for you!"
The Male Second Lead, sensing her agitation, drew his gun, and she knew she had to comply.
"Come on, don’t do this! I was already tense watching Lu Youyou confront Xu Lie, and now you’re making it worse with your antics!"
Xu Lie ignored the playful banter and responded without any persuasion or plea for mercy. "Why do you think I would set the fire?"
Lu Youyou was taken aback. Xu Lie's reaction was completely different from what she had anticipated. She expected him to be enraged by her righteous words or perhaps beg for forgiveness. How could he remain so calm? She had prepared herself for how to handle his potential fury, but now he was asking her why he would commit arson. What did she know about that? As she recalled the moment, confusion washed over her.
