There was a series of sharp knocks at the door, and before the assistant could say "please enter," the knocking continued with urgency.
Zhang Yutao and his assistant exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes lighting up in unison. The assistant, suppressing a smile, hurried to open the door.
The atmosphere in the Special Investigation Team had been low, and logically, if there were no good news, the subordinates wouldn’t be so eager to knock. The rapid knocking hinted at something positive, and they were in desperate need of good news.
With a swift motion, the assistant pulled open the wooden door, ready to inquire about the good news.
Mo Mei Lin rushed into the office, her expression a mix of urgency and frustration, completely bypassing any greeting to the assistant.
This behavior caused both Zhang Yutao and his assistant's hearts to drop; Mo Mei Lin's demeanor did not align with their hopes for good news.
"Team Leader! Xu Lie has contacted Lu Youyou!"
Zhang Yutao shot up from his seat, hands bracing against the desk: "What did he say?"
He didn’t have time to ponder why Mo Mei Lin looked upset despite this being good news; right now, they needed any lead on Xu Lie.
It was clear that they had anticipated Xu Lie would reach out to Lu Youyou and had likely monitored her phone for privacy breaches.
Mo Mei Lin summarized quickly, using as few words as possible: "They communicated through a chat app, but the content was minimal."
Xu Lie had noticed that Lu Youyou hadn’t returned home for three days and asked how she was doing at the Special Investigation Team. Lu Youyou responded with several question marks and some naive remarks. Mo Mei Lin hesitated as she recalled Lu Youyou's replies: Xu Lie hadn’t said much in return, but his last message indicated that he was at General Hospital.
Aside from that, there had been no further contact; Lu Youyou attempted voice calls and redialed but found Xu Lie’s phone was turned off.
"The hospital?!" Zhang Yutao's face turned pale as he slammed his hand on the table, wincing from the pain: "What does he think he's doing? What does he want?!"
It wasn’t that Zhang Yutao was typically impulsive; he was known for his calm demeanor and problem-solving skills, which earned him the position of Team Leader. However, three days of exhaustion combined with the pressure of solving the case, along with the fact that an Explosive Offender like Xu Lie had gone to a hospital—these three factors piled up made it difficult for him to remain composed.
That was a hospital! An Explosive Offender entering such a place could lead to countless casualties if an explosion occurred.
Fortunately, just as his temper reached its peak without breaking, Zhang Yutao managed to regain some composure. Taking several deep breaths, he forced himself to calm down: "Alright, alright. I just hope Xu Lie hasn’t left Ancheng; as long as he’s still here."
He called for all team members to gather for a meeting and instructed those outside conducting searches to join via video call.
"Also, Mo Meilin, go tell Lu Youyou to come home. Hmph! Xu Lie is hiding really well; we can't find him anywhere. Now we're about to rush this little girl to the hospital. We can't just act like kidnappers.
Seeing this, the audience finally erupted with enthusiasm in the comments.
"It seems I shouldn't have criticized Xu Lie for leaving Lu Youyou alone. Now I admit that Xu Lie is a man; he didn't just hide away but took the initiative for Lu Youyou!"
"Ah, strictly speaking, does Lu Youyou really need Xu Lie to show up? If I were Lu Youyou, wouldn't I be thrilled? Getting paid while just eating and drinking—what could be better than that?"
"The Special Investigation Team isn't so bad either. They know that Xu Lie specifically mentioned Lu Youyou hasn't been home for three days and they let her go without any fuss. Well, no one is a villain here; it's just a matter of different perspectives. One wants to change the New Marriage Law while the other wants to protect society."
