In the Da Qian Dynasty, the misty land of Jiangnan was shrouded in a quiet night, devoid of any beautiful scenery, with only the soft moonlight casting a tranquil glow on the ground.
What should have been a silent night filled only with the chirping of insects was instead pierced by flames shooting into the sky and the sounds of battle echoing relentlessly. The Yu Men sect, located by the river, was suddenly attacked. From the elders to the disciples, everyone was in a state of panic, running around like headless flies. If it weren't for the fire set by their enemies, they might not have even been able to see their way.
Chen Tao, a disciple who had joined Yu Men due to his swimming skills, stood hesitantly at the doorway, completely unaware of what was happening. It was only when an elder passing by called out that he snapped back to reality.
"What are you dawdling for? Hurry up and follow Elder Li!"
Chen Tao followed in confusion. "Elder Li, what’s going on?"
Elder Li moved swiftly, showing no signs of age as he pulled two disciples who were lost in their own panic along with him. "Heaven knows! The sect leader is leading the disciples to confront the enemy; we need to get out and call for help!"
In no time, they reached the riverbank. Yu Men had a few boats moored there. Elder Li quickly freed one, cutting the anchor rope before leaping onto the vessel. He hastily grabbed an oar but noticed three young disciples rooted to the spot like wooden stakes on the shore, which made him furious.
"Come on! What are you three fools doing?!"
"You," he pointed at Chen Tao, "go with me to Xi Sha Sect! Xiao Zhang and A Wu, take another boat and find a tavern! Ask them to come quickly for help based on our friendship over these years! If we wait any longer, Yu Men might not survive this!"
Under Elder Li's furious shout, the young disciples finally reacted and set off in two small boats. The sound of their paddles cutting through the water was drowned out by the whistling of arrows flying through the air.
Just as their boat had barely moved on the river, Xiao Zhang and A Wu from the other vessel were suddenly struck by arrows and fell into the water without a sound.
Seeing this scene, Elder Li finally understood. This wasn’t just some vendetta from rivals or an attack by water bandits. Not to mention that Yu Men had always been on good terms with others and rarely engaged in conflict; such a scale of archery could not possibly be wielded easily by mere enemies or bandits!
Elder Li glared into the darkness, his eyes filled with rage. "A crossbow?! If we do not submit to the Second Prince, they will stop at nothing to annihilate us!"
Before he could finish his words, three arrows struck Elder Li, silencing his fury forever.
Chen Tao stood in shock, unable to comprehend the sudden turn of events.
Without waiting for Chen Tao to say anything, Elder Li summoned his last ounce of strength and pushed him into the river, hoping that this disciple, who was the best swimmer among them, might miraculously escape.
The river flowed swiftly, and as soon as Chen Tao fell in, he vanished without a trace, leaving behind only the flickering light of Yu Men, quietly burning in the night, with no further signs of life.
Was the beginning of this story so intense? A midnight massacre involving crossbows, and with Elder Li's last words mentioning the Second Prince—there was clearly something royal at play here.
The opening scene had a detailed analysis frame by frame; it was impressive.
So this is how Chen Tao found a divine being at the bottom of the great river? At least it wasn’t a cliché of falling off a cliff to discover a god. Was this a fresh take or merely a rehash?
Outside the Da Qian Imperial Palace, a five-horse carriage stood waiting at the Seven Star Gate.
