In Metropolis Torshlet, the overall order was, by some measure, restored. It seemed quite counterintuitive. When the news of extraterrestrial beings spread through the networks, it triggered a wave of panic within the populace, giving rise to numerous rioters and countless incidents of looting and arson. However, when the aliens truly revealed themselves, it sparked another wave of panic among the people. This time, no rioters emerged, nor were there any acts of vandalism; instead, a strange semblance of basic order returned.
Anyone would find it hard to believe such a development could occur; shouldn’t there have been more and greater riots? Yet, that was the reality. At least the aliens’ ability to disguise themselves as humans was enough to quell the frenzied mobs. The aliens could take on human forms at any time and place, a terrifying technology that left the rioters too frightened to act out, fearing they might inadvertently attack an alien and end up as subjects for experimentation. They might even face a more gruesome fate—being skinned alive for disguise.
Hadn’t the aliens stated that their highest reward for humanity was to assume the guise of a particular human? The fiery figure just seen in the videos served as a glaring cautionary tale. The rioters certainly did not desire such a reward.
As night fell, draping the city in a veil of darkness, the once bustling streets were eerily quiet, devoid of the gunfire and flames that had marked the day. Yet, it was also far from the usual vibrant nightlife of this city that never slept. At this moment, the streets were empty; if not for the lights glowing from nearby windows, one might mistake it for a ghost town.
On a silent path, William kept a certain distance from Rims, glancing around cautiously. He felt somewhat relieved; it seemed order had temporarily returned. Rims was equally observant of the looted shops: could this really be considered restored order? In the past, such ransacked stores would have long since reported to the Investigation Bureau for repairs and called in insurance companies. It was unthinkable that shops could be left in ruins like this without anyone willing to address the situation.
With nothing else to do but sigh, William continued onward. A soft chime echoed in the stillness.
In the silent night, the sudden ringing of a mobile phone was somewhat startling, causing Rims to flinch. William's heart raced for a moment before he realized it was his own phone.
He picked it up and was surprised to see that it was a call from Director Anthony! William hurriedly answered, and before he could even greet him, Anthony, unusually gentle in tone, asked, "William? How's everything going with the East District Cross Street project?"
Huh? William had never heard his director speak like this. He hesitated for a moment and then mentally scolded himself for being slow on the uptake. "Reporting! Everything is going very smoothly!"
Perhaps it was the excitement or perhaps the surrounding quiet that made William's sudden shout startle Rims again. The nearby houses, illuminated by warm white lights, quickly turned off their lights in response.
The camera followed William closely, capturing this scene reminiscent of a midnight horror film, much to the delight of the audience.
[There are too many cowards; if it were me and my friend Fili in this environment, we wouldn't be scared by a phone ringing.]
[Don't be too confident; William suppresses rioters during the day and witnesses aliens at dusk. With that kind of psychological pressure, any little noise at night could easily startle him. What do they say in the East? Grass and trees are all soldiers?]
[Wow, this is too funny! The surrounding residents were so scared they turned off their lights. Haha, do they think William is an alien deliberately making noise to lure them out?]
