Before the Serpent's Fang could even step out of the vehicle, he saw three trucks speeding away, reminiscent of a guilty thief fleeing at the sight of their master returning home. Charles happened to be sitting in the lead armored vehicle. "Chase them! I can smell the sewer rats," he commanded.
The driver and his subordinates were accustomed to their boss's slow and deliberate speech, so they showed no surprise as they followed orders, sending the other armored vehicles ahead to pursue while they lagged behind.
The trucks roared down the street with an overwhelming force, their reckless momentum creating a spectacle akin to luxury sports cars racing through the night. The pursuing armored vehicles were equally relentless, filled with lawless members of Serpent's Fang. They had no intention of showing mercy to the three trucks ahead.
The driver focused on the chase while the co-driver leaned out through the sunroof, and two others in the back leaned out of their windows, ready to fire. The rear compartment of the truck was sturdy, reinforced with two layers of metal and packed with supplies. It was unlikely that Serpent's Fang's firepower could penetrate such barriers to harm the truck driver.
Thus, they primarily aimed for the rear tires. If they could blow a tire, everything else would be manageable. Fortunately, aiming while speeding was no easy task; most of Serpent's Fang's shots were more about luck than precision. Many bullets struck the back door of the truck with loud bangs, startling Rims nearly out of his seat.
"Fack! Damn it!" Rims cursed repeatedly, pressing the accelerator all the way down but still unable to shake off Serpent's Fang. In a state of panic, he wished he could fly the truck away.
Up front, Anthony realized they couldn't escape from Serpent's Fang either. He continued driving at high speed while grabbing the walkie-talkie with one hand. "Everyone pay attention! There's a turn ahead. Slow down as we turn, then we'll jump out and run into the alley!"
With their actions rushed and no time for regrouping, he added, "Just focus on escaping! Leave the walkie-talkies behind and take your weapons!"
By the time he finished speaking, the turn was already looming ahead. Anthony hit the brakes first, pulling up the handbrake and executed a drift with the massive truck.
William and Rims had just started driving; they dared not attempt such maneuvers. While they admired Anthony’s skill, they could only do their best to slow down for the turn.
As they rounded it, they saw Anthony’s truck come to a halt with its driver's door wide open—Anthony was nowhere in sight. Before their own vehicle had even fully stopped, both men hurriedly leaped out of their doors.
They rolled on the ground to avoid injury and immediately dashed into the narrow alleys on either side without pausing for breath.
The pursuing Serpent agents crashed into the bend.
Thud! Thud!
Several muffled sounds echoed as the armored vehicles collided. Fortunately, the occupants inside were only jostled around, sustaining minimal injuries.
Cursing, they climbed out of their vehicles, eager to check on the truck.
But they received a direct order from Charles: there was no need to inspect the truck; it had surely turned into one of the side alleys. They needed to chase after it quickly.
With their leader's command, the subordinates surged into the narrow alleyways, scattering in all directions to pursue.
Once his men had dispersed, Charles leisurely stepped out of the vehicle and strolled towards the front of the truck, casually opening the passenger door and taking a seat inside.
In the driver's seat, Anthony was grinning as he waited for him. "You made it?"
In this chase scene, the camera would undoubtedly follow the protagonist, William, so neither of them worried about being caught.
"Yeah, I came to help you escape," Charles said, tossing a cigar his way while retrieving another for himself. "The higher-ups in the Great Federation are ruthless."
"At your level, they can just abandon you without a second thought."
