Mu Yunfan, Fu Xingchen, and Su Yizhi returned to the village, their arms laden with goods. The sky had darkened, but the villagers were still gathered at the entrance, eagerly awaiting their return. As soon as they caught sight of the trio, a cheer erupted from the crowd.
"Young Master Mu, you’re finally back!" shouted a young man. Mu Yunfan hurried forward, a smile on his face. "Fellow Villagers, thank you for waiting! Our trip to the city was quite fruitful." He began to display the silver coins they had earned from selling their goods. The villagers gazed at the shiny silver, and their hearts swelled with joy at the thought of earning such income in these tumultuous times.
Fu Xingchen pulled out several sheets of paper filled with partnership proposals. "Fellow Villagers, these are agreements made with merchants in the city. From now on, our village's agricultural products and handicrafts will have guaranteed buyers!" The villagers gathered around him; although most could not read, they could sense Fu Xingchen's excitement and shared in his joy. An elderly man trembled as he asked, "Is that really true? Can we farmers really earn money with our skills?"
Su Yizhi quickly reassured him, "Indeed! Not only that, but we also met a craftsman skilled in making bamboo baskets. We’ve arranged for him to teach us, so our village can learn this craft and create another source of income."
Upon hearing this, the crowd buzzed with excitement, their enthusiasm palpable. Mu Yunfan raised his voice to rally them further: "Fellow Villagers, this is just the beginning! We will spread the name of our village far and wide so that everyone knows about our wonderful products!" The villagers nodded in agreement, filled with determination.
That evening, a bonfire was lit in the village square as everyone gathered around. Mu Yunfan took out new seeds he had brought back from the city and addressed those sitting nearby: "These are high-yield seeds resistant to pests. We’ll test them on a few plots first; if they perform well, we’ll plant them throughout the village next year." A middle-aged man scratched his head and asked, "Young Master Mu, how do we plant these new seeds? Are they the same as what we used before?"
Fu Xingchen chimed in, "Not quite. These seeds need to be spaced wider apart when sowing, and there are specific fertilization techniques to follow. Starting tomorrow, we’ll teach everyone step by step."
Su Yizhi was discussing improvements to Tufu with several women. "Sisters, while our Tufu is good, there are many more varieties in the city. I noticed a weaving technique that adds patterns for better appearance." One woman looked worried and asked, "Master Su, is this new weaving method difficult? We’re afraid we won’t be able to learn it."
Su Yizhi smiled reassuringly. "It’s not hard; I’ve already noted down the key points. We’ll learn slowly together. Let’s first make a sample; if it sells well, everyone can adopt this method."
Meanwhile, Lin Yu and Zhao Gang were also busy. Lin Yu was teaching several young men how to read using homemade flashcards while patiently explaining: "This is the character for 'field,' a square shape like our farmland. Do you remember?" The young men repeated after him earnestly; though their pronunciation was not perfect, they were fully engaged in learning.
Zhao Gang was helping villagers repair their farming tools. With his hammer flying up and down, he fixed each broken tool one by one. "Brother Zhao," said a young villager happily, "now that this tool is repaired, it can be used for several more years!" Zhao Gang grinned widely and replied, "Of course! These tools are treasures for us farmers; they must be kept in good condition."
As night deepened and the bonfire began to fade, villagers returned home filled with hopes for the future. Mu Yunfan gazed at the tranquil village and felt a surge of emotion: "Brother Fu, Brother Su, after today’s discussions with our fellow villagers, I feel even more convinced that while this path of reform is challenging, it is worth pursuing." Fu Xingchen nodded in agreement: "Yes indeed! Seeing the light in our fellow villagers' eyes makes all hardships worthwhile." Su Yizhi looked into the distance: "There will be many challenges ahead, but as long as we unite with our fellow villagers, we can surely transform this village."
Just then, they heard a faint sound of crying nearby. Following the sound led them to a little girl sitting by the roadside in tears. Mu Yunfan crouched down and gently asked her, "Little girl, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?" The girl sniffled and replied, "I… I lost the basket I was using to gather herbs for my mother. She’s sick and needs medicine." Fu Xingchen frowned slightly: "Don’t worry; we’ll help you find it. Do you remember where you lost it?"
The girl thought for a moment and pointed down a small path outside the village: "It was over there; I went to gather herbs and lost it on my way back."
Mu Yunfan stood up decisively: "Let’s go look for it together." The three of them accompanied the little girl along the path as they searched carefully under the moonlight without overlooking any corner. After searching for a while, they finally spotted the basket hidden in some grass by the roadside. The little girl’s face lit up with joy: "I found it! Thank you so much!" Watching her skip away happily filled their hearts with warmth.
Returning to their lodgings that night felt exhausting yet hopeful; they knew that change was gradually unfolding in their village step by step.
