The journey continued with its usual stops and starts, but this time it wasn’t my fault. We encountered ordinary folks seeking help along the way.
Though these were merely trivial matters—families in distress, people haunted by malevolent spirits—Hanguang Jun always stepped in during chaos. Since their purpose for this trip was to allow Si Chui and Jingyi to gain more experience, they ended up intervening in quite a few situations.
I stood back, enjoying the sight of them using the orthodox methods of Xuanmen to exorcise evil spirits. After all, I didn’t understand much of it; I might as well have been watching a performance.
There was one instance when they were expelling a malevolent spirit that had possessed someone. The spirit, unwilling to leave, attempted to attach itself to me instead. I managed to block it with my light shield and effortlessly purged it.
“Hey, Little Flower, I didn’t know you had such protective skills!” Wei Wuxian exclaimed in surprise.
“Yeah, so I said self-defense isn’t a problem,” I replied nonchalantly.
“I wonder how many more tricks you’re hiding? It’s quite intriguing,” Wei Wuxian said with a grin.
I tilted my head in thought. “Well… I think I’ve shown about everything by now.” That was true; after all, the techniques I knew were quite limited.
Except for healing.
How should I put it… As a Saint Walker, my Healing Spell is renowned for its absolute recovery power—“as long as there’s breath left in you, you won’t die.” In practical terms, it’s like having an ultimate cheat code.
Because of this, I felt it was better not to let too many people know about it; otherwise, it would likely bring me unnecessary trouble…
So far, the only person who knew about my Healing Spell was A Qing.
Therefore, unless absolutely necessary, it was best not to use it casually in front of others…

He gazed at the black figure standing at the entrance of the village like a shadow, feeling an inexplicable eeriness within him. Despite the bustling crowd around him on the road, no one seemed to notice the shadowy figure by the roadside, as if only he could see it…
Since that night of communication, a certain understanding seemed to have formed between us. Whenever we camped in the wild and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had to leave, leaving just the three of us staring at each other, we would immediately gather around the campfire and start a storytelling session without a second thought.
After all, we had nothing else to do.
“Hmm…” Lan Jingyi unconsciously shifted closer to Lan Sizhui, even secretly grabbing the hem of Lan Sizhui’s shirt.
Lan Sizhui glanced at him silently but said nothing.
“Even so, he still tried to convince himself that he was just being overly cautious, so he didn’t pay it much mind. Until the next day when he went out to work and noticed that shadow from the previous day, which had been lingering at the village entrance, now appeared by the roadside in the village. His heart skipped a beat; he instinctively felt that this shadow was definitely not right…”
“Isn’t that obvious? There’s definitely something wrong!” Lan Jingyi couldn’t help but interject.
“Jingyi,” Lan Sizhui called out helplessly.
“Alright, alright, I’ll be quiet. I’ll keep it down…” As he spoke, he shifted even closer to Lan Sizhui, almost pressing against him.
Observing Lan Jingyi’s reaction, I deliberately lowered my voice and continued slowly, “That said, he still couldn’t figure out what this shadow really was. Even when passing by it, nothing unusual happened… However, judging by the path the shadow took, it seemed to overlap with his daily route? For some reason, he vaguely felt that this shadow was somehow targeting him… Until he returned home from work and had to confirm this point—” I paused slightly and said in a low voice, “Because that shadow was standing right in front of his house.”
“Eek!” Lan Jingyi immediately clutched Lan Sizhui’s arm in terror. “There’s definitely something wrong! It can’t just be passing by by chance!”
I cast a calm glance at Lan Jingyi’s actions, suppressing a laugh within.
Although I already knew you weren’t very brave, how should I put it… It’s quite amusing that you come from a family dedicated to exorcising evil spirits yet can be frightened by such an old-fashioned ghost story. It truly gives me a sense of accomplishment!
“Jingyi,” Lan Sizhui pushed him away with an exasperated expression. “Mind your manners.”
Watching Lan Jingyi sulk as he curled up beside Lan Sizhui and grabbed his shirt again, I continued calmly, “The man stared at the shadow lingering in front of his house and had a strong feeling that something would happen tonight. So he decided not to go inside but instead turned towards an abandoned temple outside the village to spend the night, planning to return the next day to investigate.”
"Then, what happened next?" Lan Jingyi asked, both scared and curious.
"However, that night, while resting in a corner of the dilapidated temple, he was suddenly awakened in the middle of the night by an inexplicable sense of unease," I said deliberately, trying to create an atmosphere. "He opened his eyes to see a strange shadow standing before him, with an enormous blood-red mouth stretching wide, closing in on him, ready to swallow him whole..."
"Wooahhh!!!" Lan Jingyi couldn't help but scream, tightly hugging Lan Sizhui beside her.
Seeing this, I blinked in surprise.
Hey! I'm the one who should be scared!
"...Is it really that terrifying?" Your reaction is a bit over the top!
"Oh, what happened next?" A voice suddenly came from behind me.
"Wooah!" This time it was my turn to jump in shock, quickly turning around to see a bewildered face behind me.
"Uh... I'm not that scary, am I?" Wei Wuxian said innocently.
"Senior Wei... You could at least announce your presence..." I patted my chest, still feeling a bit shaken.
He usually waits until I'm resting before showing up; why is he back so early tonight?
"I did announce myself," Wei Wuxian said with a helpless shrug. "So, what were you all talking about?"
"Ah, Hanguang Jun, Senior Wei, um... We were sharing legends and anecdotes we know. That was a story told by Ms. Wei..." Lan Sizhui helplessly pushed Lan Jingyi aside again and briefly explained the situation.
"Oh? It seems I've missed out on quite a bit of fun!" Wei Wuxian said as he casually dragged Lan Wangji to sit beside him. "So, what happened next? Little Flower, what happened to that person?"
"...It is said that after that, he disappeared without a trace, and no one in the village ever saw him return." I jumped straight to the conclusion.
"He must have been eaten!" Lan Jingyi shrank timidly behind Lan Sizhui, peering out with a terrified expression. "What on earth could it be? A shadow monster that eats people? I've never heard of such a thing!"
"I don't think it sounds like a spirit or anything like that, but it doesn't seem like a ghost either... Ms. Wei, do you know what the true nature of that shadow is?" Lan Sizhui asked curiously.
Oh no! I got so caught up in scaring Lan Jingyi that I forgot not to share such fantastical tales with someone as serious and inquisitive as her; otherwise, I would end up shooting myself in the foot!
"Well... I'm not too sure, but it seems to be some kind of curse," I answered irresponsibly.
"Hmm... A curse? I think it sounds more like something sinister at work!" Wei Wuxian tilted his head in thought for a moment before turning to discuss with the person beside him. "Lan Zhan, what do you think?"
"Unknown details, no comment," Lan Wangji replied calmly.
"Oh come on, it's just an unfounded rumor anyway; it's all just for fun! Don't take it so seriously!" Wei Wuxian chuckled. "By the way, Little Flower, where did you hear this story?"
"...It was gathered from my master's travels and explorations, but it’s also possible that my master made it all up," I deflected with a rare attempt to pass the blame.
"Oh? It seems your master is quite interesting!" Wei Wuxian said with delight. "So, what else did you talk about earlier? Can you share it with me?"
Upon hearing this, I was momentarily dumbfounded.
No way! Are you implying that I have to recount everything again?!
