In the Da Qian Dynasty, the land of misty rain, where Wu Mountain meets the waters, was shrouded in a silent night, devoid of any beautiful scenery, only the soft moonlight draping the ground in tranquility.
What should have been a quiet night filled with the sounds of insects was instead pierced by flames reaching for the sky and the relentless cries of battle. The Yu Men sect, nestled by the riverbank, was suddenly attacked. From the sect leader and elders down to the disciples, everyone was in a state of chaos, flailing about like headless flies in response to the assault. If it weren't for the fires set by their enemies, they might not have even been able to see their way.
Chen Tao, a disciple who had joined Yu Men due to his excellent swimming skills, stood hesitantly at the door, completely unaware of what was happening. It was only when an elder passing by grabbed him that he snapped back to reality.
"What are you dawdling for? Hurry up and follow Old Man!"
Chen Tao followed in confusion. "Elder Li, what... what is going on?"
Elder Li moved swiftly, showing no signs of age as he pulled two disciples who were lost in their panic closer. "Heaven knows! The sect leader has taken disciples to confront the enemy; we need to get out and seek help quickly!"
In no time, they reached the riverbank. Yu Men had a few boats moored there. Elder Li drew his sword and cut the anchor rope before leaping onto one of the boats. He hurriedly grabbed an oar but found three young disciples rooted to the spot like wooden stakes on the shore, which made him furious.
"Come on! What are you three idiots waiting for?!"
"Chen Tao, you come with me to the neighboring Xisha Sect! Xiao Zhang, you and A Wu take another boat to find Water Zhuang Master! Tell them that for old times' sake, they need to come quickly to our aid! If we wait any longer, Yu Men might not survive this!"
Under Elder Li's furious roar, the young disciples finally reacted and set off in two small boats. The sound of their paddles cutting through the water was drowned out by a series of whistling arrows.
Not long after they had set sail, Xiao Zhang and A Wu from one boat were suddenly pierced by arrows and fell into the water with a splash. Seeing this scene, Elder Li finally understood.
This wasn't just some vendetta from rivals or an attack by water bandits. Setting aside Yu Men’s reputation for goodwill and their rare conflicts, such a scale of crossbow fire could not possibly be wielded easily by mere enemies or bandits!
Elder Li glared into the darkness, his eyes filled with fury. "Crossbow?! They won't stop until they eradicate us for not submitting to the prince!"
Before he could finish his words, three arrows struck Elder Li, silencing his anger forever.
Chen Tao stood frozen, utterly shocked by the unexpected turn of events.
Without waiting for Chen Tao to say anything, Elder Li summoned his last ounce of strength and pushed him into the river, hoping that this most skilled disciple in swimming could somehow escape.
The river flowed swiftly, and as soon as Chen Tao fell in, he was swept away, leaving behind only the flickering flames of Yu Men, quietly burning in the night without a trace of movement.
Was it this thrilling from the start? A midnight massacre involving crossbows, and with Elder Li's last words mentioning a prince—there must be royal matters at play here.
The details were dissected frame by frame; it was impressive.
So the protagonist, Chen Tao, is destined to find a god at the bottom of the river? At least it's not the typical trope of falling off a cliff to discover a deity—does this count as innovation or just a rehash of old themes?
Outside the Da Qian Imperial Palace, a five-horse carriage was parked near Qixing Gate.
