Ye Chen picked up the spoon that had fallen on the ground and asked stiffly, "Is it Doctor Pei? I heard he goes by Pei Guanjing?"
Lou Yu replied, "Huh? Who are you talking about, Doctor Pei? How could he possibly be Pei Guanjing! Pei Guanjing is the Adopted Son of the Regent, a dream lover for many noble ladies in the capital. How could he be treating patients? Besides, this is the border of Tianqi in Lan Prefecture; what would a scion of a prominent family be doing here? It's just a coincidence that their names are the same."
Ye Chen countered, "Then what are you doing here?"
Lou Yu paused for a moment and turned halfway around. "Naturally, I came to follow General He. His legendary feat of defeating three thousand soldiers from the Wolf Tribe with five hundred iron cavalry has always been something I admire greatly. Is there anything wrong with following him?"
"None at all. If all the noble families in the capital were like you, with more passionate young men like you, how could our Tianqi not drive the Wolf Tribe out of the Central Plains?" Ye Chen said, then changed the subject. "But I think you should go to the Medical Camp and take a look at that Doctor Pei."
"Look at what? What's so interesting about him? He's just a doctor," Lou Yu said casually as he grabbed a wild fruit from a nearby cage and popped it into his mouth.
"I feel that Doctor Pei doesn't seem like an ordinary person. His appearance... doesn't quite match what I imagine a doctor to look like," Ye Chen said, furrowing his brows as memories of doctors from his past life began to surface.
He envisioned a doctor who appeared to be in his fifties but was actually only in his thirties, looking quite anxious. The doctor would solemnly check a patient's pulse, shaking his head repeatedly without saying a word.
This was the moment that sent chills down the spine of anyone who sought traditional Chinese medicine; it wasn't fear of what the doctor might say but rather fear of silence.
Ye Chen shook his head, dismissing those thoughts.
"It's different; I can't quite put it into words. I just feel that someone like him shouldn't just be a doctor—mainly because he doesn't look like one. You should still find time to visit the Medical Camp; maybe he's at the top of that list of scions from noble families you mentioned?"
Lou Yu scoffed dismissively, "Impossible! Pei Guanjing looks like Guanyin but is actually black-hearted. Coming to the Military Camp to do such thankless work is definitely not his style. However, since you say so, I suppose I should take a look at him and see what kind of person could make you so concerned."
These two lively characters were always bickering over trivial matters; after all, they were still young and curious about new things, eager to drag others along to see them.
Fu Gui smiled without saying a word as he walked past them with a basin in hand through their narrow space. He then turned to Ye Chen and said, "Ye Chen, tomorrow our Firehead Camp will send us two along with General Xiao Lou to escort supplies. Remember to organize your things."
Ye Chen waved his hand casually and replied, "Got it, Brother Fu Gui."
In the end, under Ye Chen's persuasion, Lou Yu decided to accompany him on this trip despite his skepticism.
As he arrived at the Medical Camp and looked through the window of the tent, he was taken aback by the figure inside who was grinding medicine.
“No way, it really is Pei Guanjing,” Lou Yu finally managed to utter after a long pause.
Ye Chen glanced at him before turning his gaze back to Pei Guanjing, who was still busy preparing the medicine, silently pondering to himself.
Pei Guanjing truly lived up to his reputation as the top heir of a prestigious family. Noble as jade, graceful in movement, elegant and handsome, with a demeanor as clear and bright as a pine tree—he was precisely that kind of person. Ye Chen curled his lips in disdain, then inexplicably glanced down at himself, filled with self-reproach. It was infuriating how some people could be so much better than others.
Under the influence of an inexplicable competitive spirit, he felt utterly defeated.
A crushing defeat.
Pei Guanjing handed the freshly prepared cold medicine to the soldier in front of him. “Take this three times a day. Come to the Medicine Hall to brew it yourself. Remember not to bathe with cold water again to avoid catching a chill.”
“Understood, Doctor Pei.” The man turned and left with the medicine package.
After the soldier departed, Pei Guanjing continued his routine of recording information about the soldiers who came for treatment and their medication dosages. Just then, two particularly intense gazes from outside caught his attention, making it hard for him to ignore.
Pei Guanjing hesitated for a moment, then looked up to see two swift shadows dart past the window.
He stepped forward slowly, peering out but seeing no suspicious figures. He resumed documenting the medical cases.
Meanwhile, in a corner of the tent, Ye Chen and Lou Yu crouched down, covering each other's mouths and signaling for silence.
Once they heard Pei Guanjing leave, Lou Yu released his grip and exchanged glances with Ye Chen, signaling him to follow as they slipped away from the spot.
Just as they stood up to leave the corner outside the Medicine Hall, Pei Guanjing inside was wearing a faint smile at the corner of his mouth while recording medical cases.
“Hey, did you see clearly? Is he really the Pei Guanjing you met in the capital?” Once they reached a safe distance, Ye Chen pressed his hand against his chest, panting as he sat down against the wall.
Lou Yu leaned against the wall with one hand supporting his head. "It seems to be him. There won't be another person like him in this world."
"What is he doing in Lan Prefecture, and why is he at the Military Camp? Didn't you say he has a black heart?" Ye Chen stood up and brushed off the dirt from his back. "From what I've seen while delivering meals to him, he seems quite kind-hearted. I've seen him write up two whole volumes of medical cases. How can you say he has a black heart?" The more Ye Chen spoke, the more his tone escalated.
"I think you're the one with a black heart!"
"How could I be?!" Lou Yu's expression was hard to describe. "I don't know what he's doing at the Military Camp, but I can be sure that it's not as simple as we think. He is the Regent's adopted son."
Mentioning the Regent made Ye Chen pause in his actions.
The Wolf Tribe had been at war with Tianqi for several years, and the imperial city of Tianqi was in constant turmoil. The Former Emperor was frail and ill, and the young prince was under the Regent's control. Since the Former Emperor's death and the prince's disappearance, the Regent had been ruling alone, and no one knew whether the prince was alive or dead.
Opinions on the Regent were mixed; some said he monopolized power and disdained imperial authority, with suspicions of harming the prince. Others claimed he steadied the nation during turbulent times, stabilizing public sentiment and allowing Tianqi to survive.
After a moment, Lou Yu seemed to have thought of something suddenly. He hurriedly said a couple of words to Ye Chen before leaving.
Ye Chen decided not to dwell on it any longer. As long as Pei Guanjing wasn't coming after him, he could do whatever he wanted in the Military Camp; it was none of his business.
Returning to his dormitory in the Canteen, there wasn't much to tidy up. He caught sight of the two taels of silver he had received upon entering the Military Camp, and his brow twitched. No matter how he had felt about it back then, he never expected that after leaving Sun Family Village, he would end up in the Military Camp seeking a "livelihood."
Clenching the seal in his hand and securing his bundle, Ye Chen placed it in the middle compartment of his clothing.
