The meaning of Pei Guanjing was clear as day.
It seemed that the news about He Mu Ming being attacked last night was true. But who possessed such formidable skills to injure someone like He Mu Ming, who had been leading troops on the battlefield for over a decade?
Ye Chen strolled along the path, unable to comprehend the situation. He decided it would be best to head to the Medical Camp early and see if he could gather any information.
As the saying goes, it's better to arrive early than to arrive at the right time. As soon as Ye Chen entered the Medical Camp, he noticed several apprentices huddled in a corner, whispering among themselves.
Their voices were too low for him to catch everything, so out of curiosity, Ye Chen took a couple of steps closer.
“Hey, did you hear the Patrol Team chasing after an assassin last night? The noise was so loud! I was sleeping right by the entrance and couldn’t get a wink of sleep, but I didn’t dare go out to check,” one apprentice said.
“Why didn’t you wake us up? Why are you only telling us now?” another replied.
“I wanted to wake you all up, but we’re not supposed to move around at night; that’s one of the rules of our Military Camp. Besides, the Patrol Team only shouted once and then went quiet. No one came to our tent to wake us up. I thought I was just having a bad dream from not sleeping well these past few days,” he explained.
“If that’s the case, I think I vaguely heard Captain Li’s voice last night too, heading toward Doctor Pei’s tent,” another apprentice suddenly chimed in.
Pei Guanjing?
At the mention of Pei Guanjing, everyone’s gaze suddenly turned toward Ye Chen, who was sitting in the corner.
Ye Chen was taken aback by their stares and awkwardly smiled. “Captain Li did come by last night, but it wasn’t because General He was attacked. He had a recurrence of an old injury; his ribs were hurt. Those people just shouted incorrectly.”
“Are you sure it was just a mistake?” someone asked skeptically.
Ye Chen nodded firmly. “It was indeed a mistake. My master told me personally that General He only aggravated an old injury; there’s no assassin involved.”
"Strange, how can the Patrol Team shout about assassins without seeing any? Shouldn't they be punished for causing panic among the troops?"
"Hehe, maybe they just misjudged," Ye Chen awkwardly replied, quietly stepping away from the crowd and entering the Medicine Hall alone.
It was truly odd that such a significant event had been kept under wraps.
Why was General He’s assassination concealed from everyone? Could it be… A bold thought flashed through Ye Chen's mind. Was General He on the brink of death, and to prevent a collapse in morale, the higher-ups had instructed that it should not be disclosed?
However, if that were the case, shouldn't Pei Guanjing, as a doctor, be by He Mu Ming's side? Why was he sent back?
Ye Chen clenched the small seal in his hand, silently lamenting. This situation was quite troublesome; if General He died, wouldn't he just be wasting his time here? But Xiao Feng hadn't replied to his messages, and it would be difficult for him to leave the Military Camp alone. It seemed he was destined to be trapped here.
He listlessly picked up a handful of herbs and weighed them on a scale, quickly preparing a few common medicine packets for treating wind-cold. Then he sat back in a recliner and began reading.
Life in the military was indeed dull; unlike at the Canteen where he could prepare some tasty food, during his remaining time at the Medical Camp, he could only pass the time with these obscure Medical Books.
Not long after, someone entered the Medicine Hall.
The newcomer wore a deep purple military uniform, with sleeves tightly secured in leather, exuding an air of elegance. He strode confidently up to Ye Chen and waved his hand in front of him.
"Hey, have you got any good food lately?"
Ye Chen put down his book and frowned. "What are you doing here? This is the Medical Camp, not the Canteen. I don’t have enough ingredients to whip up anything new for you. Just make do with what they serve at the Canteen; it won't starve you."
Lou Yu, with his high ponytail and long hair cascading over his shoulders, leaned down and snatched the Medical Book from Ye Chen's hands. Curiously flipping through its pages, he read aloud: "Oh, so-called Heavenly Mandate refers to the compatibility between Tian Qian and Kun Ze’s Xin Xiang; through their union… one can regulate disturbances caused by one party’s Xin Xiang…"
"Eh…" Lou Yu's ears suddenly flushed a shade of crimson. In the next moment, he tossed the book back into Ye Chen's arms with a look of surprise. "Pei Guanjing let you read this kind of book?"
"Yeah," Ye Chen replied casually, flipping back to the page he had just been reading. "Why are you blushing? It's not like it's some dirty book."
"I'm not blushing! By the way... what is a dirty book? I've never heard of it," Lou Yu insisted, trying to deny it while also feeling curious.
Seeing the boy's slightly shy demeanor, Ye Chen suddenly had a mischievous idea. He looked at Lou Yu with a teasing smile and said slowly, "It's the Forbidden Book."
"The Forbidden Book?" As soon as those words left his mouth, Lou Yu's ears turned bright red. He pointed at Ye Chen and stammered, "You... you know about the Forbidden Book? How old are you to be reading that?"
Ye Chen casually swatted Lou Yu's hand away and chuckled, "Look at you getting scared. You're so tall, and the Forbidden Book isn't anything terrifying. Besides, aren't you supposed to be a Tian Qian? At your age, you haven't even touched Kun Ze's hand, have you?"
"Even if I am a Tian Qian, I can't just touch Kun Ze's hand. I... can only touch my future wife's hand; that's what my mother said. And besides... you're younger than me, yet you know so much. Who taught you?" Lou Yu replied earnestly, while also feeling quite curious about what Ye Chen had said earlier.
Ye Chen was only fourteen, just a little Zhong Yong, yet he was discussing the romantic affairs between Tian Qian and Kun Ze. It seemed he had been led astray by Pei Guanjing.
"Uh..." Ye Chen's smile suddenly froze on his face as he quickly raised the book to cover his expression. "This... I..."
"Hmm?" The scene shifted as Lou Yu began chasing after Ye Chen with questions.
Lou Yu reached out to get Ye Chen to lower the book, but Ye Chen kept using it to shield his face, dodging left and right. The two of them playfully chased each other around the Medicine Hall, their laughter echoing and breaking the usual tranquility of the place.
