Xu Mu cast a sharp gaze at the guards outside the cell, surveying his surroundings. In recent days, Fang Yitong had not sent anyone to contact him.
There were only two possibilities: either Fang Yitong was unaware of his capture, or there was nothing he could do about it.
At this moment, Xu Mu thought calmly. If this person were Mu Junze, then he was likely to meet his end here. Not to mention the real evidence, with Mu Junze's capabilities, fabricating something would be a piece of cake.
If confirmed, he would surely be sentenced to death within three days. He had only three days left.
"Big Brother."
Xu Mu had not been idle during these days; he had observed the guards and could roughly discern their characters. He knew whom to approach to minimize the risk of exposure.
He set his sights on a short guard with shifty eyes. The guards here rotated in pairs for shifts, and Xu Mu initially thought it would be difficult to act. However, recently a group of personnel had been reassigned, giving Xu Mu an opportunity. He called the guard over, pulled out some silver coins, and whispered a few words in his ear. Although the guard was puzzled, he was tempted; after all, this was the first time he had encountered such an opportunity.
Under normal circumstances, the money would have been split between two people. Xu Mu glanced around and said, "Just wait."
He knew things were set in motion. Sure enough, the next evening, disguised as a commoner, Fang Yitong arrived at the prison with another person. After settling the guard, Fang Yitong spoke anxiously.
"This might be the last time I can help you. It's not that I don't want to help; it's just that the the Fang Family is too insignificant to shake Duke Beiqin's mansion. When the time comes, I'll arrange for a carriage. There will be some silver inside; take it and go as far as you can..."
Xu Mu grabbed Fang Yitong's arm, his eyes reddening as his voice became hoarse and choked with emotion.
“Brother Fang, I have yet to repay your great kindness. With this departure, who knows when we will meet again. Is there no other way? At the very least, allow me to repay your favor, or my heart will be uneasy…”
Fang Yitong glanced around anxiously and lowered his voice.
“There is a way, but only this once. The only person in the world who can rival Mu Junze is Worthy Prince Mu Tingxiu, who has been residing in Capital City in recent years. It is well known that he and Mu Junze have always been at odds. You may seek him out; whether you succeed or not depends on your own fortune. As for me and the Fang Family, it has nothing to do with us…”
“Hurry up! Duke Beiqin will arrive soon. If you don’t leave now, it will be too late!”
The guard urged impatiently, and Fang Yitong quickly smiled and said he would leave right away. After saying this, he hurriedly took his leave with his companions. Not long after they departed, Mu Junze arrived with his men and looked at the food laid out in the prison with surprise.
“I didn’t expect you to have other relatives in Capital City. The meal looks sumptuous; it saves me the trouble. The taste of being a prisoner will soon come to an end for you. Do you have anything to say?”
Xu Mu sneered at his words.
“Your Highness has such refined tastes. Newly married, yet instead of staying at home with my cousin, you find time to visit me. What’s wrong? Is there something lacking on your end?”
Mu Junze shot him a cold glance, the innate pressure and the aura of someone seasoned in battle emanating from him, causing Xu Mu to tremble involuntarily, though he forced himself to appear unfazed.
“It is rumored that Young Master Xu changes partners every three breaths; seeing you now, it seems your verbal skills have indeed improved.”
“You…!”
Xu Mu's face flushed bright red as he noticed a slightly shorter figure behind Mu Junze. The loose attire of the constable looked out of place on him, and upon closer inspection, the person's fair skin and trembling shoulders, stifled by laughter, indicated that he was not one of the guards here.
He grasped the railing tightly, glaring fiercely at the individual, and shouted, "Su Che! I know it's you! You'll get your comeuppance! You'll get your comeuppance!"
Su Che shook his head at Mu Junze and stepped forward to address Xu Mu. "If I were to face retribution, you should have died long ago. Not to mention Aunt is gravely ill; over these years, with the Su Family taking care of her, have you even bothered to visit her once? Poor Aunt still worries about you. If she knew her son was behaving like this, she might as well be better off dead!"
Su Che's words made Xu Mu grit his teeth in frustration, but he couldn't retort because there was truth in what he said. Reluctantly, Xu Mu changed the subject.
"Don't mention my mother! I left home at a young age; my mother entrusted me to the Su Family. Look at my current state! Even if I am guilty of every crime imaginable—murdering, burning, robbing—it's all because of the teachings of the Su Family! The reason I haven't returned is because of you! Because you are selfish!"
"If it weren't for your false kindness, how would I be here now?! Su Che, you are the real villain."
Mu Junze frowned deeply, seething with anger. He felt that someone as ungrateful and treacherous as Xu Mu deserved a fate worse than death—torn apart or dismembered would hardly quench his rage.
He felt even more pity for Su Che, who had wasted his genuine feelings on such a person. Seeing Su Che's pale face made Mu Junze's expression darken even further.
Xu Mu felt a sense of satisfaction in his heart and continued to hurl insults at Su Che. He didn't even understand why he was acting this way; he could remain calm in front of anyone else and was never one to be easily provoked.
Yet now, just seeing Su Che standing there silently was enough to make him lose control, wanting to slander him and insult him. The sight of Su Che's discomfort brought him joy.
Perhaps it was because he had once been so obedient to him, but now he conspired with others against himself. He could not accept it; what he could not possess, he would not allow others to have, even if it meant destruction.
Especially since it was something he had once owned, his hatred for Su Che surpassed that for anyone else.
“Bring him in! This prisoner refuses to confess; let’s treat him to something nice!”
“Yes, Your Highness!”
Soon, Capital Garrison prepared the whip and water bucket. Xu Mu, tied to the wooden post, panicked. Ever since he entered the Su Family, he hadn’t faced punishment again—except for that time when Mu Junze had someone play tricks on him. The memory still sent shivers down his spine; he knew Mu Junze would show no mercy and hurriedly shouted.
“You’re taking personal revenge! I’ll confess! I’ll confess to everything! You can’t hit me! You can’t hit me!”
Xu Mu's sudden change in attitude left the guards in a dilemma. Normally, once a prisoner confessed, they were not supposed to be tortured, but it was clear that Mu Junze had no intention of letting Xu Mu off the hook.
“Confessing too quickly—hit him!”
Mu Junze snatched the whip and infused it with a bit of internal energy before striking Xu Mu fiercely.
As the whip sliced through the air with a whoosh, it landed with a resounding crack. Xu Mu's scream echoed throughout the Capital Garrison Office.
Looking at Xu Mu’s chest, his clothes were already torn apart, revealing flesh that was bloodied and mangled, with glimpses of white bone visible. Even the guards who had been executing punishment for years couldn’t help but shudder. Everyone instinctively stepped back a little, fearing that the next lash might accidentally strike them instead.
