"Well, well, Old Wang, you’re still alive, huh? Don’t just stand there talking without a care in the world. Your wife has been dead for so many years, and you can’t even find a Daughter-in-law for your son. Are you hoping he’ll end up like you, living alone and childless?"
The Old Woman glared fiercely, her words flying out without mercy.
"And you, Qing Xiang’s family, don’t get too smug. Just because your daughter-in-law pops out piglets one after another doesn’t mean anything. I’ve heard that before she married into your family, she was involved with several Er Liu Zi back in her own village. She’s nothing but a Lowly Wretch. Instead of meddling here, why don’t you check if those kids of yours are really your son’s? Ha! How embarrassing for you!"
The two villagers trembled with anger and left without saying a word.
The Old Woman felt even more triumphant now, strutting around like a victorious rooster, pointing at the crowd with her hand.
"You! You! And you! If anyone can’t stand this worthless piece of trash or that little money-wasting brat, just take them home and raise them yourself! She eats my food, wears my clothes, and can’t even give me a Nan Wa. I’ll beat her up! Let’s see who dares to stop me!"
Her aura was so overpowering that those she pointed at instinctively took a step back.
Having learned from past experiences, no one dared to intervene anymore. After all, arguing wouldn’t help; being the scapegoat could lead to all sorts of rumors about them!
People were thin-skinned at this time, and since it wasn’t their own child involved, no one wanted to stir up trouble.
"I dare you to hit her again! Do you believe I’ll go to the town right now and report you for abusing women? Is it her fault for not producing a Nan Wa? You ignorant Old Hag! You don’t know anything and are still babbling on! Do you really think having a son makes you Empress Dowager Cixi? That depends on whether your son has the fate to be an emperor! Let me tell you, Da Qing is long gone; now it’s Xinhui, and you can’t act so arrogantly!"
Yu Songyu stepped out from the crowd, her presence equally formidable.
The Old Hag had never faced such disrespect before. She was known as the most formidable person in the village, yet today she was being scolded by a little girl who hadn’t even grown up yet.
"Who does this little brat think she is? I’m not someone you can teach a lesson to; just wait until I tear your mouth apart!"
Seeing that she couldn’t out-argue Yu Songyu, the Old Hag decided to resort to violence.
She assessed the girl’s slender arms and legs; she thought taking on two wouldn’t be a problem.
Little did she know that as soon as she stepped forward, Yu Songyu seized her hand.
What shocked her even more was how strong this girl was; it hurt so much that she grimaced in pain.
With just a bit of force, Yu Songyu nearly twisted the Old Woman's hand off.
"You wanted to tear my mouth apart? Go ahead! Try it! I’ll take you straight to the town; the village can’t handle you. I’ll send you to the Anhe Revolutionary Committee instead. Let’s see if anyone can deal with you!"
Upon hearing "Anhe Revolutionary Committee," the Old Lady felt her legs go weak. She backed down.
A few years ago, someone from the village had been sent to the Revolutionary Committee for committing a crime; they had their head shaved and were forced to parade around wearing a sign.
She remembered going to watch back then; that person was dragged onto the stage barefoot for public humiliation—what an embarrassment!
Anhe was even scarier; they say they carry guns. She didn’t want to face any bullets.
However, she didn't understand why this was a household matter. Why was she involving the Revolutionary Committee and An?
But she dared not confront them directly, knowing that these young people from the countryside were often well-educated and had seen much of the world. If she were to be caught by An, her family would be in serious trouble.
What if I report An? I’m not afraid! Even a fair official finds it hard to settle family disputes!
The Old Lady withdrew her wrist, her voice growing softer with each word. Before she could finish speaking, she hurriedly tried to retreat into her house.
Yu Songyu was not about to let her off so easily. Just as she was about to step forward to grab her, a voice stopped her.
"Yu Zhiqing!"
Looking over, she saw the village head and Yang Qinghe pushing their way through the crowd. It was indeed the village head who had spoken.
A few of them had been in a meeting at Headquarters when a villager burst in to report that something was happening here, prompting them to rush over without delay.
Seeing that the village head had arrived, the Old Lady exchanged glances with her son, who held a whip, and an old man squatting in the corner smoking. In an instant, the three of them slipped into the house.
As soon as the village head arrived, the villagers began to share their accounts of the Old Lady's family's misdeeds and what had transpired today.
After listening to everything, the village head called Yu Songyu aside.
