The next morning, Li Xiuzhen came to find Yu Songyu to go together.
"Li Xiuzhen, I have something to do in the city today. Sorry about that. If you see Yang Qinghe, could you please let him know?"
Yu Songyu pulled out a bunch of snacks from her pocket and stuffed them into Li Xiuzhen's bag.
"Huh? Then why don't I go with you?"
Given Yu Songyu's small stature, Li Xiuzhen was quite worried about her going that far alone.
"Don't worry, I'm not going by myself. Hurry up and get on!"
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely! Don't worry, just go!"
Knowing that Yu Songyu was heading to the city, her Little Old Lady began to nag again, expressing concern for her safety and worrying that she might be deceived or something.
Yu Songyu had no choice but to soothe her for a while before the Little Old Lady finally relented.
Though she didn't say it out loud, she couldn't help but think that the current environment was much safer than in the future.
On the way to the town in an Ox Cart, Yu Songyu noticed Wang Erlai's awkwardness. He had clearly chosen a clean outfit specifically for this outing.
Although his clothes were clean, they were patched together with patches. The stitching on those patches was rather rough as well.
Yu Songyu pretended not to see his embarrassment, afraid of hurting his pride.
She generously explained Wang Erlai's tasks for the day and even handed him a pencil and a small notebook.
She hoped that Wang Erlai could help her record the types and prices of goods in the Department Store today.
The Uncle Bull Cart dropped them off at the Bus Station entrance, and Yu Songyu instructed him to come back later in the afternoon to pick them up, handing him some money so he could head back first.
After buying their tickets, the two went to the Department Store in the city. Although it was called a Department Store, it was only two stories tall; however, its scale was far superior to that of the Supply and Marketing store in their town.
Yu Songyu took Wang Erlai around inside and out several times; the variety of goods here was extensive enough to meet ninety percent of people's daily needs.
If there was something you wanted that the Supply and Marketing store didn’t have, it was unlikely you would find it anywhere else. This is also why the salespeople at this time seemed so confident and capable.
First of all, they had stable jobs; secondly, one had to find ways to be polite with them and even build good relationships.
For example, pork during this time sold better when it was fatty; lean meat and ribs weren't as popular.
If you wanted to buy high-quality fatty meat, you needed to establish a good rapport with the salespeople.
At that moment, the basic requirement for salespeople was to refrain from casually scolding customers. It was easy to imagine that if you wanted to buy something, you had to consider her mood; whatever she offered, you had to take. Trying on clothes or accessories, or picking and choosing, was out of the question. Given this situation, it was no wonder they acted so arrogantly.
Wang Erlai dressed modestly, attracting quite a bit of disdainful glances and whispers. Yu Songyu observed him closely and noticed that Wang Erlai was intently examining various products, much like Liu Laolao, who had never seen the world before. He seemed completely unfazed by the surrounding voices and gazes, as if he had erected a barrier around himself that shielded him from external disturbances.
Impressive composure! Yu Songyu thought to herself. This man was young but undeniably steady. However, she noticed that he was merely looking around and hadn’t taken out the small notebook and pencil she had given him to record the items. This disappointed Yu Songyu; was he so engrossed in looking that he had forgotten the task she assigned him?
Yet even with this realization, Yu Songyu chose not to address it directly. The reason she brought Wang Erlai here was to get to know him better; she hadn’t truly expected him to take notes. She had already discreetly recorded the types and prices of the products in her own notebook.
Once they exited the department store, Yu Songyu fixed a serious gaze on Wang Erlai. “Have you forgotten what we came here for today?”
“No, I haven’t,” he replied.
