After dinner, Yang Qinghe stood solemnly in front of his father Yang Guangyi's desk.
“Dad, I want to get married and apply to return to the city as soon as possible!”
Yang Guangyi paused his writing and looked up at his son. The resemblance between them was striking; the young man had a handsome face and an air of vitality.
“You think you can just come and go as you please after experiencing re-education in the countryside? It’s not that simple,” he replied. He had sent his son to the countryside to cultivate his spirit of hard work and endurance. His original plan was to bring him back quickly for military training.
He hadn’t expected that his son would want to get married.
“Aunt Hu’s son was able to return to the city because of your connections. If he can do it, why can’t I?”
His father was a division commander in the military district; if he truly wanted to bring him back, it shouldn’t be difficult.
“Returning is one thing, but getting married is out of the question!”
“Why not?”
“A man should protect his country with passion and dedication. Don’t you have any thoughts of serving your country?”
“Even if I serve my country, that doesn’t mean I can’t get married, right?”
Yang Guangyi fell silent for a long time, seemingly contemplating how to respond.
“Yang Qinghe, is that you back?”
The stalemate between father and son was broken by a female voice filled with joy.
Yang Qingping entered in her military uniform, her short hair neatly styled, exuding confidence.
“Big sister, I’m back!”
Yang Qinghe turned around with a smile; he held great respect for his sister.
Yang Qingping reached out to pat his arm and then pinched it playfully. She felt that her younger brother had grown stronger, embodying the sturdy spirit of a man.
She had overheard some of their conversation earlier.
Her elder brother had sacrificed himself, and now she had joined the military. She did not want her younger brother to continue serving; instead, she wished for him to live the life he desired.
“Dad, my little brother has already suffered a lot in the countryside. When he comes back, let him take a civilian job and live a simple life with a wife, right?”
In these turbulent times, she understood all too well what her brother would face if he continued in the military. Their family had already earned enough honor and accolades; there was no need for her brother to keep going to the front lines to build a legacy. She had practically raised him herself, and as his sister, her heart ached for him.
She did not want him to be a hero; she only hoped he could live a safe and peaceful life. “In a country that is not at peace, how can one have a home? It’s simply a woman’s perspective!”
Father Yang slammed his pen down heavily on the table, sternly reprimanding her. “A woman’s perspective? Dad, as long as the country needs me, I will fight bravely and never flee! But Xiao He is my brother—can’t you let him live a more ordinary life? Do you have to push him until he ends up like our elder brother, never to return? Is it only through sacrificing our children that you can achieve your lofty ideals?”
With a loud slap, Yang Qingping was knocked down, and Yang Qinghe quickly rushed forward to support his sister. Yang Qingping’s face bore five distinct fingerprints, her eyes reddened as she stormed out of the room.
Yang Guangyi stood frozen in place, shocked by his own actions. That was his daughter, not an enemy. How could he have struck her with such force?
“Old Yang, have you gone mad? That’s your daughter!”
Yang Mother stormed in angrily, grabbing Yang Qinghe’s wrist and pulling him outside. This old man had lost his mind; it was better to ignore him!
Yang Mother tenderly embraced Yang Qingping, gently wiping away the blood at the corner of her mouth. “Old fool, why lose your temper with the children? If you want to hit someone, come hit me instead!”
Her heart ached as she shouted towards the study.
