Zheng Chengxiu seemed genuinely interested in the question, probing further.
"Have you read many books?"
Yu Songyu, unsure of his intentions, decided to play along.
"Yes, I have a lot of books at home. I've been flipping through them since I was young, so naturally, I know quite a bit."
"Then did you destroy them later?"
"Hmm?"
Yu Songyu vaguely understood that many books during this time could be considered banned, which made her hesitant to answer directly.
"Don't misunderstand me; I don't mean anything by it, and I won't expose you." Zheng Chengxiu adjusted his glasses and lowered his gaze, a hint of disappointment on his face as he hesitated to continue.
"You enjoy reading, so I wanted to ask if you have any books."
When she arrived, Yang Qinghe had briefly introduced Zheng Chengxiu's situation to her. He was essentially alone in this world, with no family or friends. He spent most of his time at the Lin Industry Bureau Broadcast Station and had little interaction with others. In an era without the internet, mobile phones, or computers, books were likely his only means of passing the time.
Zheng Chengxiu was surprised by her intelligence and even more taken aback by her straightforwardness.
"So you do have books? Many of them!"
Yu Songyu wasn't worried about him exposing her; her instincts told her he was just a bookworm who loved literature. Even if Zheng Chengxiu did report her, what could happen? She had her own space; if the Revolutionary Committee came to investigate, she could easily send all the books into her space in an instant, leaving no evidence behind. If he insisted that the books were his, she could counter with a defamation claim.
He was alone here and rarely communicated with anyone; it was unlikely anyone would come forward to support him.
Upon hearing that Yu Songyu had many books, Zheng Chengxiu's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Really? Then, can I get an answer from Yu Songyu?" Zheng Chengxiu's previously lifeless expression suddenly brightened with vitality.
"Sure, what kind of books do you want?"
Zheng Chengxiu was so excited that he struggled to articulate his preferences when asked about the types of books he liked.
Yu Songyu thought for a moment. In this era, aside from folk tales and similar stories, he could probably read some classic literature from both China and abroad, right? "How about 'The Red and the Black', 'How the Steel Was Tempered', or 'The Moon and Sixpence'? Or domestically, 'Journey to the West', 'Water Margin', or 'Dream of the Red Chamber'? Are those okay?"
Zheng Chengxiu was so overwhelmed with excitement that he could barely speak, and Yu Songyu even noticed tears welling up in his eyes.
"Are they just a few books? Why are you so emotional about it?"
"Forget it, I'll just grab a couple for you in a few days. You can take your time with them!"
"That's wonderful! I don't even know how to thank you. How about this: you don't have to come to the Lin Industry Bureau Broadcast Station anymore. If anyone asks, I'll say all our communication drafts are written by you. What do you think?"
Yu Songyu considered it and realized this was a great deal. Not having to go to work every day while having someone cover for him was simply fantastic! He could free up a lot of time to do what he wanted. Little did he know that this casual arrangement would lead to unexpected benefits.
"Alright, it's settled then. Once you've finished the books, you can come find me to exchange them. But you'll have to take on more responsibilities at the Lin Industry Bureau Broadcast Station from now on!"
Yu Songyu wouldn't completely stop coming by; after all, he still needed to be seen around the office occasionally so everyone knew he was working at the Lin Industry Bureau Broadcast Station.
"Of course! You can rest assured; there won't be any problems!"
