Heizi's eyes were ablaze with desire, burning away his rationality.
Wang Zhaoran stared at his crimson eyes, quietly drawing out a dagger from behind him.
"What are you going to do, Heizi?"
"What am I going to do? Hahaha!"
Heizi revealed his teeth in a sinister grin, laughter twisted and unsettling, as a fierce battle loomed on the horizon.
Wang Heng felt a tightening in his chest at the sight, silently pulling out his dagger, his gaze sharp like that of a Little Wolf Cub, fixated on the man before him.
At that moment, sounds of fighting suddenly erupted behind the three of them. The small group that had followed them down was already embroiled in chaos over the treasure.
"People die for wealth, birds die for food. Don't blame me for being ruthless; just be sure to open your eyes in your next life!"
A Rugged Man swung a sharp knife, plunging it violently into another man's heart. His aim was true, but he didn't stop there; he pulled the knife out and stabbed the man several more times in the chest before finally relenting.
The man pierced by the knife coughed up blood in great gasps until he collapsed, still staring wide-eyed.
"Hahaha! Hahahaha!"
The Rugged Man's laughter was deafening, like the cries of demons from hell.
"These bastards have gone mad!" Wang Zhaoran muttered under his breath; humanity could only withstand so much testing.
"Hahaha! Hahaha!"
The Rugged Man continued to laugh maniacally until his expression suddenly turned serious, locking onto someone trembling in the corner of the tomb.
"Xiao Wu, go down and keep your Fourth Brother company; he's all alone on his journey!"
The man approached with his knife raised, showing no signs of panic after killing someone, instead radiating excitement.
"Mang Ge, please don't kill me! I don't want anything! I beg you!"
"Xiao Wu, I don't want to kill you either, but Xiao Si is your brother. If I don't kill you, you'll become a threat—am I that foolish?"
Wang Mang's eyes were bloodshot and his expression ferocious, truly resembling a ghost from hell come to collect souls.
"Help! Please, save me! Brother Lai, Heizi Ge, help me!"
Xiao Wu's legs turned to jelly, and he collapsed onto the ground, his back against the hard stone wall with nowhere to retreat.
Wang Zhaoran felt a pang of sympathy and was about to rush over to save him. But he saw Heizi raising his dagger high above his head, intending to take advantage of Wang Zhaoran's distraction to eliminate Wang Heng first. Fortunately, Wang Heng reacted quickly, twisting his body to the side and narrowly dodging the attack.
"Heizi, are we really going to turn against each other after all we've been through as brothers?"
"Brother Lai, I’m not as fortunate as you. You’ve had the luck of meeting benefactors. You don’t know how envious the brothers have been of you these past two years! For me, if I don’t take this risk now, I might never turn my life around! You have to understand, brother!"
Heizi chuckled lightly, but the murderous intent in his eyes remained unchanged.
"I understand. But Heizi, haven’t I helped you a lot these past two years? When it comes to the money from collecting antiques, I’ve always given you more than less. Later on, I even brought you and the brothers along to buy goods, and you didn’t lose a single cent!"
"Yes, you did give generously. But while you’re up there enjoying the meat, us brothers who’ve grown up with you are left drinking the dregs. Do you even consider us brothers?"
"If I didn’t consider you brothers, would I have given you money? Can’t I help others?"
"Oh, so it’s true what they say about you, Brother Lai. You’ve started lecturing us from your high pedestal again? And now you want me and the brothers to learn culture? Ha! You know what kind of people we are? We can’t even read a single character! Aren’t you just mocking us for being country bumpkins and looking down on us?"
"Since that’s how you feel, I have nothing more to say!"
What else could Wang Zhaoran say? Should he admit that he wasn’t good at judging people? Should he confess that he felt like he had been stabbed in the back by his best brother?
He still remembered how he had planned to help him make connections before heading to Jing City.
